The Kariba Dam is a double curvature concrete arch dam in the Kariba Gorge of the Zambezi River basin between Zambia and Zimbabwe. At 128m tall and 579m long, the structure forms Lake Kariba - extending 280km and holding 185km³ of water.

Kariba Hydroelectric Plant - Zambia, Zimbabwe (1960)
Kariba Dam & Hydroelectric plant is located in the Kariba Gorge of River Zambesi, between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The construction of that infrastructure, the first funded by World Bank in Africa, began in August 1956. It was completed at the end of 1959, six month ahead the scheduled terms, and was inaugurated on May 17 1960. Five international groups took part in the tender, the winner was an Italian consortium.
For Salini Impregilo Group, Kariba Dam represents the first major collaboration between companies (Impresit, Girola, Lodigiani), that contributed to its history and that led, over the course of time, to its current configuration.
This video shows the natural environment where the infrastructure was displayed, the construction site, preparatory activities and project execution, and workers’ village. Around 10,000 people took part in the construction, including 5,000 local people, trained by Italian technicians and executives.
The Kariba Hydroelectric Plant is a double-curvature concrete arch dam and a complex of underground works including penstocks, a power station, a transformer hall, expansion chambers, service tunnels and shafts. The artificial lake created by the dam measures 300 km in length, with a width of 30 km, a height of 128 m and total capacity of 185 million cubic meters. The underground powerhouse houses six units, each with a power generating capacity of 100,000 kW.

Zambia, Zimbabwe give French firm go-ahead to fix Kariba Dam
Zambia and Zimbabwe will give French engineering firm Razel-Bec the task of repairing Kariba Dam. The dam's walls are swelling, raising the risk of cracks in the structure that holds back up to 180 billion cubic metres of water. A collapse of the dam wall could pose a risk to millions of people in Zambia and Zimbabwe -- as well as Malawi and Mozambique further downstream. The dam was built in the 1950s. According to its safety manager, the expansion should be completed by the end of 2020, while work on the spillway to contain the swelling is expected to be done by 2022.
Lake Kariba, Kariba Dam and the Lower Zambezi in Zambia
Some nice drone footage of the Southern Belle cruise boat on Lake Kariba and of Nsofu Lodge on the lower Zambezi and the Kariba dam. The Southern Belle cruises on the lake all year and the Nsofu Lodge is right where the Kafue river meets the Zambezi. All in Zambia, The music is ''Born free'' by Matt Monro, yes I know it's as cheesy as hell but I like it :-)

Modern Day Operation Noah - Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe
Lake Kariba is the fourth largest man-made lake in the world and is home to an abundant eco-system of wildlife, birds, fish and aquatic animals. Each year, as the seasons change, the water levels of the lake rise and recede as affected by the rains further up the continent that increase the flow into the lake. Earlier this year in June, the lake was at sitting at 84% capacity in comparison to the previous years level of only 56%. Amazing!
When the water was at its highest level in June this year (2018), it created islands which were previously part of the mainland and it was discovered that there was some impala stranded on two of these islands. Having heard of this situation, the Changa guides quickly stepped in and an exciting rescue operation began!
Changa’s team of guides and staff, met together with National Parks Rangers, MAPP (Matusadona Anti-Poaching Project), Mitch Riley (manager of Spurwing Island) and his team, and the Matusadona National Parks Area Manager, Victor Mkhwebu and a plan of action was created. We like to think of this as a mini “Operation-Noah” project!
Nine boats set off to the island where the impalas were stranded and several staff were dropped off on one side of the island where they began to herd the Impala to a smaller detached part of the island, so it would be easier to capture them. It is safe to say that a great deal of athleticism was displayed by both the humans and the impalas!
