The Matobo National Park forms the core of the Matobo or Matopos Hills, an area of granite kopjes and wooded valleys commencing some 35 kilometres south of Bulawayo, southern Zimbabwe.
The hills were formed over 2 billion years ago with granite being forced to the surface.
Mzilikazi, founder of the Ndebele nation, gave the area its name, meaning 'Bald Heads'.
The Hills cover an area of about 3100 square kilometres, of which 424 square kilometres is National Park, the remainder being largely communal land and a small proportion of commercial farmland.
The park extends along the Thuli, Mtshelele, Maleme and Mpopoma river valleys.
Part of the national park is set aside as a 100 square kilometres game park, which has been stocked with game including the white rhinoceros.
The national park is located within the southern Africa bushveld ecoregion.
The national park is the oldest in Zimbabwe, established in 1926 as Rhodes Matopos National Park, a bequest from Cecil Rhodes.
The original park borders extended well to the south and east of the current park.
The park area then increased with the acquisition of World's View and Hazelside farms to the north.
The current name Matobo reflects the correct vernacular pronunciation of the area.
The Matobo Hills were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003.
The area exhibits a profusion of distinctive rock landforms rising above the granite shield that covers much of Zimbabwe.
The Matobo Hills is an area of high botanic diversity, with over 200 species of tree recorded in the national park, including the mountain acacia, wild pear and the paperbark tree.
There are also many aloes, wild herbs and over 100 grass species.
Matobo National Park has a wide diversity of fauna: 175 bird, 88 mammal, 39 snake and 16 fish species.
Game include white rhinos, sable antelopes, impala and leopards.
The park contains the world's densest population of the latter, due to the abundance of hyrax, which make up 50% of their diet.
The game park in the west has been restocked with white and black rhinos.
It has been designated as an Intensive Protection Zone for the two species, as well as hyenas, hippopotami, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest sand ostriches.
Matobo National Park contains the highest concentration of black eagles, and breeding pairs of these birds, worldwide.

Kariba Ferry to Matusadona, Zimbabwe. Travel guide.
Kariba is once again our departure point for our next destination - Matusadona National Park.
Self Drive Do it Yourself Zimbabwe:
Kariba Ferries operates a ferry service across the lake on their car ferry Sea Lion and its sister Ferry Sea Horse. The 280-km trip across the lake takes approximately 24 hours.
It has two departure points, one from Kariba itself at the eastern end and the other from Mlibizi at the western end.
The government run DDF - which stands for District Development Fund-Shipping service ferry operates scheduled ferry trips to various destinations on the lake.
The best way to visit Matusadona is to charter a ferry from DDF. This 50-km trip will take about 4 - 5 hours depending on the whether. Normally by road the park is reached via Karoi. Eight km north of Karoi on the Harare/Lusaka road turn left through the Urungwe Communal Land.115 km from Karoi, the Sanyati River is crossed. Continue on along the Binga road for a further 62-km and then turn right and continue on for 82 km to Tashinga, which is the headquarters for the park.
From Kariba this route is more than 400-km long and can take up to a full day to cover. From Karoi the roads are either gravel or dirt. The last 80- km is rough and not suitable for saloon cars, and during the rainy season the road could be impassable even in 4x4 vehicles. The trip on the ferry is more enjoyable though, as you can sit back and relax while you ease your way out over the lake.
As you leave Kariba behind small islands appear on the horizon as the captain skilfully manoeuvres the craft on its route.
Dozens of houseboats and other smaller craft are encountered on your way. No wonder Kariba is known as Zimbabwe's Riviera. Lake Kariba is recognised by many as the tourist paradise of Zimbabwe. It is 280 km in length and supports a large population of people and animals along the shoreline.
A wide range of activities are on offer to the visitor - game viewing, boating, sailing, water-skiing, scuba diving and houseboat cruises.
But it is the fishing that is probably the most sought after activity, particularly the fighting Tiger fish. Wildlife in the area is prolific and elephant and buffalo are common sights along the shoreline.Other species, which one can see, are impala, waterbuck, zebra and sable.
Birdlife is varied and includes many water birds such as herons and egrets as well as large numbers of fish eagles.
Visitors can also hire one of the many houseboats available at Kariba.
This is the ideal fishing holiday, cruising slowly up and down the lake, stopping to fish at will, and enjoying the spectacular sunsets whilst the captain carefully moors the boat for the evening.
The Matusadona National Park lies along the southern shores of the Lake and the Department of National Parks provides several campsites within the park.
In addition there are many top quality safari operators in this area offering small, exclusive camps staffed with professional guides to take visitors on game drives, walking or fishing.

Mana Pools National Park is a 219,600 ha wildlife conservation area and national park in northern Zimbabwe.
It is a region of the lower Zambezi River in Zimbabwe where the flood plain turns into a broad expanse of lakes after each rainy season.
As the lakes gradually dry up and recede, the region attracts many large animals in search of water, making it one of Africa's most renowned game-viewing regions.
The park was inscribed, in conjunction with the Sapi Safari Area (118,000 ha) and Chewore Safari Area (339,000 ha) as a single UNESCO World Heritage site (for a total of 676,600 ha) in 1984.
The Mana Pools were designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance on 3 January 2013.
Mana means ‘four’ in Shona, in reference to the four large permanent pools formed by the meanderings of the middle Zambezi.
These 2,500 square kilometres of river frontage, islands, sandbanks and pools, flanked by forests of mahogany, wild figs, ebonies and baobabs, is one of the least developed national parks in Southern Africa.
It has the country’s biggest concentration of hippopotami and crocodiles and large dry season mammal populations of the zebra, elephant and Cape buffalo.
The area is also home to other threatened species including the lion, cheetah, Cape wild dog, and near-threatened species including leopard and the brown hyena.
When the area was inscribed by UNESCO, it was one of the most important refuges for eastern black rhinoceros populations in Africa, with about 500 animals.
By 1994, poaching had reduced these to just 10 remaining rhinos, which were removed to another area for their protection.
The park is contiguous with Zambia's Lower Zambezi National Park on the opposite side of the Zambezi River, and the larger UNESCO area is contiguous with the Urungwe Safari Area (287,000 ha),the Dande Safari Area (52,300 ha) and the Doma Safari Area (76,400 ha).
The sanctuary, one of the only two pockets of nyala in the country, is also home to over 16 000 buffalos and more than 12 000 elephant.
More than 350 bird species are enough to draw the breath of any ornithologist.
Its banks flutter with Goliath herons, Egyptian and Spurwing geese, cormorants, storks, brilliantly coloured bee-eaters, and kingfishers.
Vultures, plovers, Nyasa lovebird, yellow-spotted nicator, white-collared pratincole, Livingstone’s flycatcher, banded snake-eagle, and the cliché symbol of Africa, the black and white fish eagle, haunt the riverine forest and mopane woods.
In the river, tiger fish, bream, tilapia, vundu, nkupi, chessa, electric fish, eel fish, cornish jack and lung fish sport and prey upon one another.
