DR Congo: Goma, a city living on the edge

FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7
Nearly 15 years after the deadly eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano and four years after the M23 rebel offensive, Goma is still tending its wounds. Amid uneven reconstruction efforts, the stability of the largest city in eastern DR Congo remains fragile. Mehdi Meddeb and Maxime Souville report.
The volcanoes are one side, Lake Kivu on the other. Today sees a fragile peace, while yesterday bore witness to war and insurgencies. Goma, it seems, is used to extremes. Bustling with construction work, the capital of North Kivu province, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is a city living on the edge. Goma faces multiple threats: an active volcano, a potential gas explosion under Lake Kivu, ethnic conflicts and political tensions. Moreover, with President Kabila’s mandate due to officially expire on Monday December 19, there is concern for the future.
Goma remains calm but tense. The city seems desperate to cling to peace, after so many years of insurgencies, forced exoduses, cholera epidemics and refugee influxes, which have all profoundly destabilised a region of strategic importance for Africa’s Great Lakes.

This is Democratic Republic of Congo (Lake Kivu)
Here is a little bit of history of Congo along with some shots over Lake Kivu on our way to Goma. We took the fast boat to go visit Goma and it was definitely an experience. We got there in less than 2 hours if I remember correctly.
In this video I also call attention to the most basic history of Congo. Did you know that Congo is the richest country in the world? Did you know that King Leopold murdered 10 million Congolese while plundering Congo's resources in the late 1800s? The Congo's resources have been a source of great global conflict, with European & Americans primarily fighting directly and indirectly in the Congo for control of the resources. Did you know that Congo's resources power the world's technology and nuclear energy? Yes, Congo is unknown--both its riches and its struggles. But the Congolese people know their resilience way too well. They have seen it all but still carry hope for a better future.
Camping in Democratic Republic of Congo | Keshero, Goma | Lake Kivu | 09-03-2019
This quiet and beautiful 7-acre tropical place is situated around 8 KM away from Goma City centre at Keshero by the Lake Kivu. We had lots of fun camping, BBQ, swimming and campfire. We also enjoyed the La Paillote for lunch and The Bungalow for breakfast (all self cooked). What a wonderful and quality time we spent.....
DR Congo boating company offers transport across Lake Kivu
A company in the Democratic Republic of Congo's lake side city of Goma is building boats to offer an alternative means of transport across Lake Kivu, in a country where poor infrastructure and unreliable public options often leave commuters stranded. Here's Vik Chege with more.

Lake Kivu becomes major transport hub
Workers at this shipyard in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo are putting the finishing touches to a newly constructed boat that will sail one of Africa's Great Lakes - Lake Kivu.
The 58 meter-long boat is the 13th from a series of locally assembled boats named Emmanuel, by its makers.
They have become a significant mode of transport from the lake side city of Goma to Bukavu, as an alternative to a journey that could take up to five days by road.
The Emmanuel boats were a brainchild of a Con…

The sights and sounds of Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, during my trip there in June 2015.
Today, Goma is the gateway to the recently re-opened world heritage-listed Virunga National Park, and (still) hosts the world's largest UN peacekeeping mission. While enduring one of the most complex and protracted armed conflicts in history, the city was devastated in 2002 by the eruption of nearby Nyiragongo volcano. As shown in the video, residents are still breaking up the dried lava flows and using the rocks to build walls and houses.

The Airport in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo - A Welthungerhilfe-Project
More information:
Goma is the biggest city in Easter Congo – with a population of half a million. The Goma airport is located in the middle of town. In January 2002 the volcano Niyragongo erupted and buried large parts of the city and the airport under massive layers of lava. Although parts of the runway cannot be used anymore, the pilots keep using it to take off and land planes.
The location of the Goma airport makes the situation for the residents particularly dangerous. In 2008 a plane shot over the end of the runway into the city and killed 47 people – most of the dead were visitors to the local market.
The reconstruction of the runway started not till seven years after the volcanic eruption. The Department for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany financed the construction work, while the Welthungerhilfe conducted it on-site. It was a long and difficult process until the project could be finalized. The construction work was disrupted by disputes between the regular army and the M23-Militia in 2012.
The first step towards the reconstruction of the Goma airport was finally completed in February 2015. Prospective developments are the entire asphalt coating, an extension and the professional illumination of the runway. In future the people in Goma will profit from more security, a connection to the international air traffic and economic development.
Projects by/with: Deutsche Welthungerhilfe e.V., Auswärtiges Amt, Régie des Voies Aérienne, Sapsama, Safricas
