1. Mount Nyiragongo Goma
Mount Nyiragongo is an active stratovolcano with an elevation of 3,470 m in the Virunga Mountains associated with the Albertine Rift. It is located inside Virunga National Park, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, about 20 km north of the town of Goma and Lake Kivu and just west of the border with Rwanda. The main crater is about two kilometres wide and usually contains a lava lake. The crater presently has two distinct cooled lava benches within the crater walls – one at about 3,175 m and a lower one at about 2,975 m . Nyiragongo's lava lake has at times been the most voluminous known lava lake in recent history. The depth of the lava lake varies considerably. Virunga National Park is a national park in the Albertine Rift Valley in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was created in 1925 and is among the first protected areas in Africa. In altitude, it ranges from 680 m in the Semliki River valley to 5,109 m in the Rwenzori Mountains. From north to south it extends about 300 km , largely along the international borders with Uganda and Rwanda in the east. It covers an area of 8,090 km2 and is listed in the List of World Heritage in Danger since 1994.Two active volcanoes are located in the park, Mount Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira. Nyiragongo Volcano, Virunga NP, DR Congo in 4K Ultra HD

Mount Nyiragongo is an active volcano in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Trekking to the crater rim (starting at 1,989m/6,525ft, reaching 3,470m/11,380ft) is about 5-6 hours, the hikers sleep in huts on the top and enjoy stunning night views of one of only several crater lakes in the world, this one being the largest.

Virunga National Park, in the eastern part of DR Congo, was the first Africa's national park, established in 1825, and UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979.

Going Down Inside Africa's Most Dangerous Volcano

Explorer & Adventurer, George Kourounis, descends down inside Nyiragongo volcano in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in the Virunga National Park, near the border with Rwanda in 2016. It is commonly considered to be the most dangerous volcano in all of Africa.

George descends 500 meters to the very bottom of the volcano and walks right up to the violently boiling lake of lava, the largest in the world (200 meters wide). The volcano has a history of causing lava flows that have spilled down the flanks of the volcano, into the nearby city of Goma, threatening hundreds of thousands of lives. This happened in 1977 and again in 2002.

In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on the border of Rwanda, bubbles the planet's largest lava lake.
Mount Nyiragongo overlooks the town of Goma, now populated by more than a million inhabitants. Since 2003, a team of volunteers with a passion for volcanoes has helped the Scientists of the Goma Volcanological Observatory and UNOPS, The United Nations Office for Project Services, an operational arm of the United Nations working on the natural hazards in the DRC, to learn more about this African giant. Seasoned explorers used to difficult terrain and harsh conditions, they help volcanologists descend into the huge crater to collect lava and gas samples, gather data and install sophisticated monitoring equipment. This 52-minute documentary by Olivier Grunewald retraces the adventure of these enthusiasts at the edge of the world's largest lava lake over the past ten years.
Their last mission in June 2015 was made possible thanks to the IRIS Foundation / Fondation de France and PETZL Foundation.

Le film d’Olivier Grunewald retrace en 52 minutes, l’aventure de ces passionnés, pendant plus de 10 ans, au chevet du plus grand lac de lave de la planète.
