Lakes of Italy | Lago d'Orta | Orta Lake | Cinematic aerial footage filmed with with DJI Inspire2, Zenmuse X5 and Zenmuse X7 35mm cameras. Featuring the Orta Lake in the north of Italy in Autumn and Winter. The lake is west of Lake Maggiore.
It has been so named since the 16th century, but was previously called the Lago di San Giulio, after Saint Julius (4th century), the patron saint of the region. Its southern end is about 35 kilometres (22 miles) by rail, to the northwest of Novara on the main Turin-Milan line, while its north end is about 6 kilometres (4 miles) by rail south of the Gravellona-Toce railway station, halfway between Ornavasso and Omegna. Its scenery is characteristically Italian, while the San Giulio island has some very picturesque buildings, and takes its name from the local saint, who lived in the 4th century.
Located around the lake are Orta San Giulio, built on a peninsula projecting from the east shore of the lake, Omegna at its northern extremity, Pettenasco to the east, and Pella to the west.
It is supposed that the lake is the remnant of a much larger sheet of water by which originally the waters of the Toce flowed south towards Novara. As the glaciers retreated the waters flowing from them sank, and were gradually diverted into Lake Maggiore.
Il Lago d'Orta è il più occidentale dei grandi laghi delle Prealpi italiane, posizionato tra il bacino del Lago Maggiore ad est (dal quale è separato dal massiccio del Mottarone) e le montagne ad ovest (quali il Monte Croce) che lo separano dalla Valsesia. Il lago si è originato dal fronte meridionale del ghiacciaio del Sempione.
Al centro del lago è presente l'isola di San Giulio.
La presenza umana sul lago d'Orta risale al Neolitico, come testimoniano alcuni scavi archeologici condotti sull'isola di San Giulio che hanno portato alla luce frammenti ceramici ascrivibili alla cultura dei vasi a bocca quadrata.
Con l'arrivo dei Longobardi attorno all'anno 570, le terre dell'alto novarese furono inquadrate nel ducato di San Giulio, a capo del quale fu posto nel 575 il duca Mimulfo con l'incarico di difendere la zona dell'Ossola dai Franchi. Quando i Franchi] varcarono il Passo del Sempione, il re dei Longobardi Agilulfo fece decapitare Mimulfo. Nel 957 il castello dell'isola, in cui si era asserragliato Berengario d'Ivrea, venne assediato da Litolfo, figlio dell'imperatore Ottone I di Sassonia. Alla morte di Litolfo, Berengario riprese le ostilità costringendo lo stesso imperatore a calare in Italia; mentre Berengario si fortificava a San Leo nel ducato di Spoleto, sua moglie Willa, radunati tutti i suoi tesori, si rifugiò sull'isola di San Giulio, essendo queste le uniche fortezze del regno a poter resistere a lungo. L'assedio all'isola del 962 durò due mesi, dopodiché la regina si arrese. Ottone si impossessò del tesoro ma, ammirato dal coraggio della regina, le permise di raggiungere il marito. Durante l'assedio nacque sull'isola Guglielmo da Volpiano, futuro abate di Digione.
A partire dal 1926 il lago fu gravemente inquinato dagli scarichi di rame e solfato d'ammonio dell'industria tessile Bemberg, che produceva rayon con il processo cupro-ammoniacale[5]; in pochi anni il lago diventò invivibile per la maggior parte degli organismi pelagici e bentonici[6] ivi presenti.
L'evento del 1926 non fu l'unico, e l'inquinamento continuò negli anni successivi a causa del continuo processo di industrializzazione delle coste. Negli anni '60 i metalli scaricati dalle attività elettrogalvaniche (quali i sali di rame, cromo, nichel e zinco) aggravarono le condizioni del lago accentuando ulteriormente l'acidificazione dell'intera massa lacustre provocata dai processi di ossidazione biochimica dell'ammonio a nitrato. Con la chiusura degli scarichi venefici, dagli anni '80 iniziò un graduale miglioramento anche a seguito di interventi massivi di liming effettuato dall'Istituto per lo studio degli ecosistemi di Pallanza, e alla costruzione dei collettori fognari delle zone urbane limitrofe.

Il lago di Orta è uno dei più piccoli tra i laghi prealpini, ma anche uno dei più graziosi con le rive boscose e la minuscola isola di San Giulio che emerge al centro.
L'antico borgo di Orta San Giulio, classificato fra i più belli d'Italia, sorge alla estremità di un promontorio che da oriente si protende verso le acque del lago. Il centro del borgo, completamente pedonale, è caratterizzato da strette viuzze molto pittoresche ed una architettura che va dal barocco al rinascimentale con bei palazzi, ville e giardini. Cuore del borgo è piazza Motta, un vero e proprio salotto affacciato sul lago da cui partono i motoscafi per l'isola San Giulio.
Giunti sull'isola si viene accolti da una breve scalinata che conduce alla Basilica romanica dedicata al Santo che nel IV secolo evangelizzò la zona. L'isola è percorsa da una stradina circolare chiamata via del silenzio e della meditazione, suggestivo connubio fra spiritualità ed architettura che conduce al Palazzo dei Vescovi e poi ad una Abbazia benedettina con monache di clausura.
Tornati al borgo ci si può incamminare per una via in salita che porta alla bella parrocchiale di S. Maria Assunta del 1485 e quindi proseguire verso il Sacro Monte di Orta con una breve e piacevole passeggiata fra ville con bei giardini e splendide vedute sul lago.
Il Sacro Monte è un luogo molto suggestivo, progettato nel 1591 e dedicato a San Francesco d'Assisi, sorge a circa 400 metri d'altitudine e comprende, oltre ad una chiesa, un percorso nel parco con 20 cappelle contenenti ben 376 statue di personaggi a grandezza naturale che illustrano i vari accadimenti nella vita del Santo.
Il Sacro Monte di Orta dal 2003 fa parte del patrimonio Unesco, assieme agli altri otto sacri monti sparsi fra Piemonte e Lombardia.

Tra gli angoli di Piemonte di più emozionante poesia, il Lago d'Orta è sicuramente lo specchio d'acqua più romantico d'Italia. Incastonato tra dolci colline e il verde dei monti, si allunga da nord a sud, dalle pendici del Mottarone all'estremo nord della pianura novarese. Gli fanno da cornice una manciata di pittoreschi borghi, di cui alcuni appoggiati lungo le sue sponde, altri più in alto, sulle alture. Il borgo di Orta è indiscutibilmente la perla, affacciato sull'isola di San Giulio dominata dall'abbazia benedettina e non a caso definito l'isola del silenzio.

According to legend, San Giulio was a priest who in A.D. 390 wished to found a sanctuary on the island. The locals would not take him there, as it was supposed to be inhabited by monsters and snakes, so the saint sailed across on his cloak. Once San Giulio reached the island, he banished the snakes and monsters and founded his sanctuary. The basilica's pulpit, carved with griffins and serpents, recalls this event. Fifteenth-century frescoes depicting the life of the saint also decorate the basilica.

Da visitare assolutamente è la piccola Isola di San Giulio, raggiungibile in battello o in motoscafo, dominata dalla basilica romanica, dal palazzo vescovile e dall'abbazia.

Het Ortameer (Italiaans: Lago d'Orta / Cusio) ligt in de Piëmontese provincies Novara en Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. De waterspiegel van het meer ligt 290 meter boven zeeniveau. Water verlaat het meer via de korte rivier deNigoglia die al na enkele honderden meters samenvloeit met de Strona. Deze stroomt op zijn beurt weer uit in het Lago Maggiore. Het Ortameer is het enige grote Noord-Italiaanse meer waarvan het water aan de noordzijde uitvloeit.
In het meer ligt een relatief groot eiland, het Isola San Giulio, hierop staat een aantal gebouwen waaronder een 9e-eeuwse basiliek. Orta San Giulio (Òrta in piemontese e in lombardo) è un comune italiano di 1.161 abitanti della provincia di Novara, inserito nella lista dei i borghi più belli d'Italia ed insignito della bandiera arancione da parte del Touring Club Italiano.Orta è situata a metà della sponda orientale dell'omonimo lago, all'estremità di un promontorio collinare che digrada verso la riva, a 45 chilometri dal capoluogo Novara.Il nucleo principale dell'abitato sorge in riva al lago di fronte all'Isola di San Giulio, parte anch'essa del territorio comunale.Orta è sempre stato il centro principale della Comunità della Riviera, un autonomo consorzio di comuni esistito dal medioevo fino a metà settecento. La città ebbe anche un sistema di fortificazioni distrutte nel 1311 e mai ricostruite in quanto la posizione appartata garantiva adeguata sicurezza, nella sua storia subì infatti un solo saccheggio, nel 1524, ad opera degli Sforza.Il centro di Orta, completamente pedonalizzato, è caratterizzato da viuzze strette molto pittoresche.Al centro del paese si trova Piazza Motta, vero e proprio salotto affacciato sul lago, dalla quale partono le imbarcazioni dirette all'Isola di San Giulio. La piazza è circondata su tre lati da edifici ben proporzionati allo spazio, per buona parte porticati. Sul lato nord si trova il broletto o Palazzo della Comunità della Riviera di San Giulio, risalente al 1582, costituito da un portico al piano terra, usato per il mercato, ed una sala riunioni al primo piano; qui si esercitava il potere legislativo, oltre che esecutivo per mezzo del Consiglio Generale (composto dai deputati del feudo vescovile) ed è considerato il simbolo del lungo periodo di autogoverno della regione. La costruzione è un connubio di elementi classici e rustici come gli affreschi sulla facciata e l'irregolare scala esterna, le piccole colonne del portico ed il tetto in beole. L'edificio culmina con una piccola torre campanaria.Fa parte del comune di Orta San Giulio l'unica isola del Lago d'Orta, l'Isola di San Giulio che dista circa 400 metri dalla riva. L'isola è dominata dall'edificio dell'ex seminario, costruito nel 1844 sulle rovine del castello. Il seminario ospita oggi il convento di suore benedettine di clausura Monastero Mater Ecclesiae. Sull'isola si trova anche la Basilica di San Giulio, il più importante monumento romanico del novarese.
