Making room for the Golden-rayed Blue Butterfly's favourite food
Trust for Nature’s Wimmera office is hosting a Green Army team that have been working hard to provide habitat for a number of the Wimmera’s threatened species. This time-lapse film shows the team removing Salt Paperbark saplings from Lake Wyn Wyn Wildlife Reserve. Why, you might ask, is the team removing a protected indigenous plant? They thinned out the dense stand of Salt Paperbark to provide the Creeping Myoporum with more room to grow. Creeping Myoporum is an important food plant for the critically endangered Golden-rayed Blue Butterfly (Candalides noelkeri). This beautiful butterfly, like some other threatened species, is found only in the Wimmera near the salt lakes of the ‘Natimuk-Douglas Chain of Lakes’. Trust for Nature used to own part of Lake Wyn Wyn Wildlife Reserve. In 2011, the Trust gifted the property to the Crown, and it is now managed by Parks Victoria. Many thanks to Green Army Supervisor, Ellen, from Conservation Volunteers Australia for putting together this film for us. #ausgreenarmy
