Largo do Senado | Senado Square | Macau Nightlife I AM IN MACAU
Senado Square (Largo do Senado) is a public square in Macau. It is located in the central area of the Macau Peninsula. Covering an area of 3,700 square meters (4,425 square yards), this is one of the four largest squares in Macau; the others being Praça do Centro Cultural, Praça do Lago Sai Van and Praça do Tap Seac. In 2005 it was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List as it forms part of the Historic Centre of Macau.
In the early 1990s, the authority hired some Portuguese experts to pave the square with a wave-patterned mosaic of colored stones. From then on this area has become a popular place for cultural activities in Macau. The buildings around the Senado Square have a long history and have many western features, so they have been well protected by the authority and no one is allowed to alter the facades of these buildings.

Largo Senado Square-Macau`s Historic Walk
Senado Square-Macau`s Historic Walk
The Senado Square, or Senate Square is a paved town square in Sé, Macau, China and part of the UNESCO Historic Centre of Macau World Heritage Site. It is an elongated triangular shaped square.
The square is so named as since Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) it has been in front of the Leal Senado Building. During the era of Portuguese control this is where the local authorities used to review the troops on their inaugurations. In 1940, there was a statue of a Portuguese soldier named Mesquita in its centre. He was responsible for the deaths of many Chinese soldiers during the hostilities with the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Understandably, the statue has been destroyed by Chinese people and replaced by a fountain; this is why the square is also called the Fountain.
In the early 1990s, the authority hired some Portuguese experts to pave the Senado Square with a wave-patterned mosaic of colored stones. From then on this area has become a popular place for cultural activities in Macau. The buildings around the Senado Square have a long history and have many western features, so they have been well protected by the authority and no one is allowed to alter the facades of these buildings.
There are shopping centers and traditional Chinese restaurants around the Senado Square. Fashion clothes, famous snacks and the scenic environment make Senado Square a famous attraction. Firework displays, lion and dragon dances are usually held on special days such as the Chinese New Year and Christmas. One can go and enjoy those activities.
Around the Square, there are other attractions. To the east of the square, there lies the Macau Cathedral. At the end of the paved road, there is the St. Dominic's Church. On the third floor of the church there is a museum of paintings, sculptures and liturgical ornaments that illustrate the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Asia. Walk to north of the church and you will arrive at the Ruínas de S. Paulo (Ruins of St. Paul's). This is the most famous landmark in Macau. Right at the east of the Ruínas de S. Paulo is the Museu de Macau (Macau Museum), in which historical relics of Macau are exhibited. The Lou Kau Mansion is located to the northeast of the square. Walk to the southeast along the Av. De Almeida Ribeiro (San Ma Lo) from the square, and you will find the Casino Lisboa, a famous casino in Macau.

Things to do in Macau Travel Guide
Today's feature travel video from Asia is of the top attractions worth considering while visiting in Macau, China including checking out Senado Square and the Ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral. Feeling well rested after going to bed several hours earlier than normal, we felt a jolt of adrenaline about exploring the historic areas of Macau located on another island from the hotel we were staying at. Fortunately, our hotel offered 'free' transfer service from Cotai to the Macau Peninsula. We literally went from an island filled with nothing but luxury casinos to a more historic area that featured historic Portuguese inspired architecture, cobbled walkways and a plethora of people.

As soon as we got outside of the transfer bus, Audrey marveled, I feel as though I'm back visiting more relatives in Brazil or wandering around in Portugal.
The first place we visited was the Senada Square (Portuguese: Largo do Senado; Chinese: 議事亭前地). With pastel colored buildings, Portuguese white & black pavement and a series of red lanterns, this place was a collision between East meets West.
Prior to Macau becoming the 'Las Vegas' of Asia with its plethora of casinos, Senate Square was the epicenter of the former Portuguese Colony of Macau.
As the Historic Centre of Macao (Chinese: 澳門歷史城區; Portuguese: O Centro Histórico de Macau) it is one of twenty locations featuring the melting pot of Chinese and Portuguese cultures in Macau.
Even though Macau has been a Special Administrative Region of China since 1999, it has still retained its Portuguese influence from several centuries of colonial rule.
As we walked past the main square we started to branch off into a narrower alley where we were inundated by the exotic smells of Macanese delights being peddled by shop owners and hawkers alike.
Some of the most popular Macanese foods we sampled included Egg Tarts, Almond Cookies and Porkchops in buns.
Macanese cuisine is a mix of Portuguese, Chinese and SE Asian ingredients forming one of the more distinct fusion style cuisines in all of Asia.
After taking the time to gormandize on Macanese treats, we continued our ascent towards the imposing Ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral ((Portuguese: Ruínas de São Paulo, Chinese: 大三巴牌坊).
Considered as one of the most famous landmarks in all of Macau.
The heat and humidity of Macau in late August was on par with the weather we had been experiencing in SE Asia for several months.
This was distinctly different from the time I first visited back in February, 2008 when I could walk for kilometers on end without breaking a sweat.
Built from 1852 to 1602 by the Jesuits, Saint Paul's Cathedral was one of the grandest churches in all of Asia.
Destroyed by a fire during a typhoon in 1835, the southern stone faced features intricate carvings.
Finally we legged it up to Mount Fortress (Portuguese: Fortaleza do Monte; Chinese: 大炮台) for impressive 360 degree panoramic views of the city.
Fortaleza do Monte (Portuguese for Mount Fortress, also Monte Forte, officially Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora do Monte de São Paulo, in English: Fortress of Our Lady of the Mount of St. Paul; Chinese: 大炮台)
Cannons remain, some pointing directly at some of Macau's most monumental casinos, including the Grand Lisboa.
Overall, our late morning and early afternoon excursion was a fascinating glimpse into Macau's past with hints of modernity and riches flashing in all directions from the peak of Fortaleza do Monte:
Recurso de vídeo de hoje de viagem da Ásia é das principais atrações vale a pena considerar ao visitar em Macau, na China, incluindo verificar Praça do Senado e as Ruínas da Catedral de São Paulo.
今天的专题旅游视频来自亚洲的著名景点是值得考虑的,而在中国澳门,参观包括检查出议事亭前地和圣保罗大教堂的废墟。
This is part of our Travel in China series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Chinese / Macanese culture, Chinese / Macanese foods & Chinese / Macanese people.

Walk to Ruins of Saint Paul from Senado Square in Macau
The Ruins of St. Paul's (also known as Sam Ba Sing Tzik)
stands adjacent to the famous Mount Fortress and
Macau Museum. The front façade and the grand stone
stairs are the only remains of the greatest church.
First constructed in 1580, St. Paul's Church caught
fires in 1595 and 1601. However, reconstruction started in
1602 soon after the church was burnt down. Completed in
1637, the church became the biggest Catholic Church in
East Asia at that time. Unfortunately, a violent typhoon hit
Macau in 1835 and the church caught fire for the third
time leaving its glory a history. According to historical
materials, St Paul's Church, built with white stones, had a
grand vaulted roof and 3 magnificently decorated halls.

China Macau City Video Tour: Largo de Senado Senado Square + Ruins of St. Paul 澳門一天遊
My first China Macau City video is now up! From Manila, Philippines to China Macao we took AirAsia airlines last April 2019. From Macau International Airport we rode the free shuttle bus we arrived in Hotel Lisboa Macau. During our first day in China Macao City we got to see the main city attractions of Macau tourism. Our Macau city tour started with a stroll to Senado Square a Portugese-influenced town square and a part of UNESCO Historic Centre where we got to see the 17th century Ruins of St. Paul and St. Dominic’s Church. Largo de Senado or Senate Square actually connects the ends of Largo do São Domingos at one end and Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro. St. Paul Ruins or the one wall facade was a church back then before it was burned down in the 1980’s and I thought it was really cool to that it could be seen from different alleys in Senado Square, thus I tried my first attempt at making a decent looking hyperlapse. We also had the chance to try the famous Portugese egg tarts which is definitely a must-try! We ate lunch near St. Paul’s Ruins and dinner at Palacio Lisboa located at Hotel Lisboa. Macau or Macao? Some say they can be used interchangeably, hence I used both for the description of this travel video. Basically, this Macao video clip covers only day one! The next travel video montage will cover Day two as we tour Hong Kong for a day by taking a TurboJet ferry from China Macao and the rest covers more of our China Macau trip so there would definitely be another Macau China travel video. Join us as we travel Macau city!
Thank you for watching my first Macau montage!
