Spearfishing Adventure In Las Terrenas
Ivan, Kirk and I head out for some spearfishing from one of my favorite beaches in Las Terrenas, Samana, Dominican Republic.
We take a look at a few schools of evasive Blue Tang, try to catch up to a Stingray for some footage, fire at a Barracuda and check out other interesting sea life during our adventure.
We were looking for the big fish so we didn't bring back much unfortunately, but it was still really fun. Stay tuned for more adventure videos!

Retire In Las Terrenas Dominican Republic - Retire In Caribbean - Part 1
Retire in Las Terrenas Dominican Republic is the next in the series on popular towns along the North Coast of the Dominican Republic where Americans, Canadians and Europeans like to retire or own vacation homes. Las Terrenas sits on the North Coast of the Samana Peninsula and it offers a unique blend of European and Dominican cultures.
Las Terrenas got its start as a small fishing village back in 1946 when Trujillo relocated a group of farmers and fishermen to the little village from Santo Domingo. The whole Samana peninsula has always been a nature lovers escape, but until 2012 is was pretty darn hard to get there. Back before they built the nice modern highway up from the Santo Domingo international airport, you could count on a hectic 4 to 5 hour ride to get to Las Terrenas. That all change with the construction of a first class toll road up from the capital.
Las Terrenas has consistently been a popular vacation destination, primarily for European and Canadian tourists since that road was opened. In fact the Dominican government has promoted the growth of tourism on the Samana peninsula with the addition of a new international airport, Samana El Catey, as you enter the peninsula. Currently that airport is used mostly by European and Canadian airlines, but at some point you can expect more American Airlines to add this destination to their itineraries.
Las Terrenas has no shortage of hotels and condo rentals as well as villa rentals. Las Terrenas is a popular home base for French, German and Brits, among others. There are a good selection of villas for sale.
As you will see in the next video in this series, there are numerous daytrip adventures out of Las Terrenas, with the most popular being the trip over the mountain to Samana to watch the annual migration of humpback whales that mate in the huge Samana bay. At the peak, they say there will be up to 10,000 humpback whales in that bay.
Las Terrenas Tours Video
Las Terrenas Tours Video - No longer a rustic fishing village, today Las Terrenas is a cosmopolitan town and seems as much French (approaching a colony) and Italian as Dominican. Fashionable-looking European women in designer sunglasses ride their personal ATVs with a bag of baguettes in tow, battling on roads with way too many motos. Its a balancing act between locals and expats -- one that has produced a lively mix of styles and a social scene more vibrant than anywhere else on the peninsula. Either way you walk along the beach road leads you to a beachfront scattered with hotels, high palm trees and calm aquamarine waters.
Like Las Galeras, Las Terrenes is independent-traveler-friendly and a good place to hook up with fellow nomads.

Las Terrenas Samana 4K Dominican Republic
Las Terrenas Samana 4K Dominican Republic
Las Terrenas is a town on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic, located in the province of Samaná. It is known for its scenic landscapes, white sand beaches and clear waters
Las Terrenas was founded in 1946, when then-President Rafael Leonidas Trujillo ordered the rural inhabitants of Santo Domingo to resettle in the town as farmers and fishermen. Las Terrenas was then a small fishing village isolated from the rest of the country.
Over the years the village's old fishermen's cabins have been slowly transformed into bars, restaurants and shops.
Samana was a slave trade port for the British in the early seventeenth century. Today, inhabitants are a combination of Taino, Spanish, West Indian and African slaves.
The name Las Terrenas originates from the French la terrienne (the landlord).

Beauty of Las Terrenas!
Las Terrenas is a town of at least 14,000 (2002 census) inhabitants, located on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic on the Samaná Peninsula. It's treasured by both foreigners and Dominicans for its scenic landscapes, white sand beaches and clear aquamarine waters.
Founded in 1946, Las Terrenas was a quiet, rural fishing village until the last 10-20 years. Today, inhabitants have expanded beyond the West Indian and Spanish farmers and fisherman. There are roughly 6,000 expats living in Las Terrenas, about half are French (and French seems as widely spoken as Spanish). The next biggest expat groups are the Italians, followed by Brits, Canadians and Americans.
From the very decent roads (2 hr drive from capital of Santo Domingo) to the growing number of hotel, clubs and restaurants, it's clear the Dominican Republic is installing the infrastructure necessary for the tourism trend to continue to grow.
We discovered a number of small condo/hotel developments being built, or recently built and now expanding. They're still quaint, intimate resorts though that offer great opportunities for short-term vacation rental investment ownership combined with opportunity for personal vacation use. Given the growing real estate investment opportunities, I found it interesting that the name Las Terrenas originates from the French la terrienne (the landlord).
We found Las Ballenas to be the best beach in Las Terrenas - that's where we'll consider buying :)

Las Terranas Town, Samana Province, Dominican Republic - Caribbean island holiday
We are in the town of Las Terrenas located in the Samaná province of the Dominican Republic. This is a walking tour of the town which starts on the Las Terranas main road and also includes a walk on the beach road. We where there in December and this is actually New Year (31/12). The video follows our walk up the main road where we try to give the viewer an idea of the atmosphere of this rather small Caribbean island fishing town.
The main road offers tourists a limited number of shops, restaurants and excursion sale agents. On the beach road there are a few more restaurants and bars and also a very limited local shopping center. As tourists who enjoy visiting local towns in the destinations we visit we where rather disappointed with the Town of Las Terranas. Our opinion (just our opinion) was that the town lacked the local (Dominican) business and culinary experiences that you for example meet in Asia. Street kitchens etc. although local art was very abundant!! The Les Terranas area is full of hotels catering to all needs. Many of the hotels are big all inclusive resorts which are very popular with Canadian and American tourists, also the European charter tourists who typically seem to stay at these resorts for 14 days (just as we ourselves did).
Wiki writes about Las Terrenas, It is internationally known for its high rate of tourism and its white sand beaches and clear waters. Among the most frequented places visitors are mostly European nationality Spanish, Italian, French and German. One of the best known people or community in the town, is the village of fishermen. Its name comes from the town was formerly mainly inhabited by fishermen. Among the best known beaches are beach poppy tip and whales. The attractions of this region is constantly growing due to investment in tourist buildings like hotels, clubs, restaurants and shopping such places as Port Plaza las Terrenas, with a similar architecture of a boat. In the evenings entertainment centers are crowded by hundreds of tourists and like their restaurants with a wonderful view of the beach...
Wiki writes about Samana, Samaná (Spanish pronunciation: [samaˈna]) is a province of the Dominican Republic. Its capital is Santa Bárbara de Samaná, usually known as Samaná. Samaná is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the northeastern part of the Dominican Republic. It is known for its mountains of which it is almost entirely formed. Samaná has numerous beaches, and with the 6 November 2006 opening of the new Samaná El Catey International Airport, it is bound to become one of major tourist destinations in the Dominican Republic...
Wiki writes about The Dominican Republic, The Dominican Republic (Listeni/dəˌmɪnɨkən rɨˈpʌblɪk/; Spanish: República Dominicana [reˈpuβlika ðominiˈkana]) is a nation on the island of Hispaniola, part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region. The western three-eighths of the island is occupied by the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands, along with Saint Martin, that are shared by two countries. Both by area and population, the Dominican Republic is the second-largest Caribbean nation (after Cuba), with 48,445 square kilometres (18,705 sq mi) and nearly 10 million people, one million of which live in the capital city, Santo Domingo..
This footage was filmed in Las Terrenas a small town located in the Samaná province on the island of the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean.

Cabrera to Las Terrenas Dominican Republic Road Trip - Part Two
Come with us on the Cabrera to Las Terrenas Dominican Republic road trip. The team checks out the dramatic views along this north coast road to the Samana Peninsula and along the way we share our observations about why the north coast of the Dominican Republic is a hidden jewel for future expats. There is a reason so many Americans, Canadians and Europeans are buying property on the north coast and choosing to move their family here... either full time or part time. Along this stretch there are a dozen breathtaking, almost deserted beaches just awaiting you.
Ooooops. Around 11:46 I mention Roatan being part of Belize. Of course I meant it's next door neighbor, Honduras. Lost my train of thought as I was driving.
