Las Terranas Town, Samana Province, Dominican Republic - Caribbean island holiday
Watch all our Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo videos here:
We are in the town of Las Terrenas located in the Samaná province of the Dominican Republic. This is a walking tour of the town which starts on the Las Terranas main road and also includes a walk on the beach road. We where there in December and this is actually New Year (31/12). The video follows our walk up the main road where we try to give the viewer an idea of the atmosphere of this rather small Caribbean island fishing town. The main road offers tourists a limited number of shops, restaurants and excursion sale agents. On the beach road there are a few more restaurants and bars and also a very limited local shopping center. As tourists who enjoy visiting local towns in the destinations we visit we where rather disappointed with the Town of Las Terranas. Our opinion (just our opinion) was that the town lacked the local (Dominican) business and culinary experiences that you for example meet in Asia. Street kitchens etc. although local art was very abundant!! The Les Terranas area is full of hotels catering to all needs. Many of the hotels are big all inclusive resorts which are very popular with Canadian and American tourists, also the European charter tourists who typically seem to stay at these resorts for 14 days (just as we ourselves did).

Top 10 Best Place To Visit in Dominican Republic
The top 10 adventures to take while in Dominican Republic.
If you’re in the mood for a Caribbean holiday, the Dominican Republic is the place to go. It shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti in the Greater Antilles. The island is where Christopher Columbus made his first stop in the New World in 1492 and which later became the first capital of the Spanish empire in the Americas. You’ll find plenty of evidence of the country’s Spanish heritage. Today, however, people visit the Dominican Republic for its beautiful sandy beaches, clear waters and water sports activities. Off-shore activities include deep sea fishing and whale watching. There’s really not any good reason for you to stay home after you’ve seen these best places to visit in the Dominican Republic.

Traveling To Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic: Top Things To Do in 2019
From the air, Sublime Samana in Las Terrenas looks like your typical sprawling, five-star beachfront resort. Choose between a one or two-bedroom suite or opt for more privacy and space in a two or three-bedroom casita. Deciding between the two on-site restaurants, Bistro and Beachside Grill Palapa, is a win-win situation. If you want romance, it’s a no-brainer on nights when Beachside hosts special events on the beach, and you can eat under the lights with your toes in the sand. If you don’t want to bother with looking at menus offering so many tempting dishes, just ask for the catch of the day or the ceviche. While there’s plenty to do on-site and you’ll be tempted to stay put, I recommend you explore the surroundings a bit. Horseback riding to Cascada El Limon or driving for 10 minutes into the lively old town are just a few of the alternatives.
Retire In Las Terrenas Dominican Republic - Retire In Caribbean - Part 1
Retire in Las Terrenas Dominican Republic is the next in the series on popular towns along the North Coast of the Dominican Republic where Americans, Canadians and Europeans like to retire or own vacation homes. Las Terrenas sits on the North Coast of the Samana Peninsula and it offers a unique blend of European and Dominican cultures.
Las Terrenas got its start as a small fishing village back in 1946 when Trujillo relocated a group of farmers and fishermen to the little village from Santo Domingo. The whole Samana peninsula has always been a nature lovers escape, but until 2012 is was pretty darn hard to get there. Back before they built the nice modern highway up from the Santo Domingo international airport, you could count on a hectic 4 to 5 hour ride to get to Las Terrenas. That all change with the construction of a first class toll road up from the capital.
Las Terrenas has consistently been a popular vacation destination, primarily for European and Canadian tourists since that road was opened. In fact the Dominican government has promoted the growth of tourism on the Samana peninsula with the addition of a new international airport, Samana El Catey, as you enter the peninsula. Currently that airport is used mostly by European and Canadian airlines, but at some point you can expect more American Airlines to add this destination to their itineraries.
Las Terrenas has no shortage of hotels and condo rentals as well as villa rentals. Las Terrenas is a popular home base for French, German and Brits, among others. There are a good selection of villas for sale.
As you will see in the next video in this series, there are numerous daytrip adventures out of Las Terrenas, with the most popular being the trip over the mountain to Samana to watch the annual migration of humpback whales that mate in the huge Samana bay. At the peak, they say there will be up to 10,000 humpback whales in that bay.

Budget Friendly Dominican Republic For Ideal Caribbean Retirement
How can Americans, Canadians and Europeans stretch their retirement dollars to live like royalty on a fixed income. The team meets with Mr T of the Educated Traveler channel to explore what it costs to live the good life on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, even on US Social Security or Canadian CCP/OAS.
Like our DRescapes team, Mr T makes it his mission to tell his viewers the pros and the cons of moving to and living in the Dominican Republic. Like us, he prefers to live on the North Coast and says if he was rich he would probably live in Cabrera away from the throngs of tourists. Shhhh...don't let the secret out, but it actually can be less expensive to live well in Cabrera for even less than the cost of living in Sosua and Cabarete.
If you would like to check out the North Coast for yourself, join us on one of our DR Escapes Discovery Tours where we will help you see all the towns favored by expats and even help you meet other expats that made the move before you.
