Construction of the town and castle began in the late 13th century at a ford in the Vltava River, which was important in trade routes in Bohemia. In 1302 the town and castle were owned by the House of Rosenberg. Emperor Rudolf II bought Krumlov in 1602 and gave it to his natural son Julius d'Austria. Emperor Ferdinand II gave Krumlov to the House of Eggenberg. From 1719 until 1945 the castle belonged to the House of Schwarzenberg. Most of the architecture of the old town and castle dates from the 14th through 17th centuries; the town's structures are mostly in Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The core of the old town is within a horseshoe bend of the river, with the old Latrán neighborhood and castle on the other side of the Vltava.
The town was seat of Duchy of Krumlov. 8,662 inhabitants lived in Krumau an der Moldau in 1910, including 7,367 Germans and 1,295 Czechs.
During the interwar era it was part of Czechoslovakia. Between 1938 and 1945 it was annexed by Nazi Germany as part of the so-called Sudetenland. The town's German-speaking population was expelled after liberation by the American Army during World War II and it was restored to Czechoslovakia.
During the Communist era of Czechoslovakia, Krumlov fell into disrepair, but since the Velvet Revolution of 1989 much of the town's former beauty has been restored, and it is now a major holiday destination popular with tourists from Germany, Austria and beyond, as far as China. In August, 2002, the town suffered from damage in the great flood of the Vltava River.

Český Krumlov Castle is unusually large for a town of Krumlov's size; within the Czech Republic it is second in extent only to the Hradčany castle complex of Prague. Inside its grounds are a large garden, an extensive bridge over a deep gap in the rock upon which the castle is built, and the castle itself, which in turn consists of many defined parts dating from different periods of time. After the garden was not adequately maintained during the second half of the 20th century, the site was included in the 1996 World Monuments Watch by the World Monuments Fund. With financial support from American Express the garden's central fountain was documented and reconstructed, and is functional today.
Church of St. Vitus (Kostel Sv. Víta) is a Gothic church dating back to the 15th century with frescoes from the same period.

CESKY KRUMLOV (KRUMAU DER MOLDAU ) amazing medieval city
Cesky Krumlov is a charming, cosmopolitan town with unique atmosphere 492 metres (1610 ft.) above the sea level on the banks of Vltava (Moldau) river in an unspoiled countryside neighbourhood. Now it has total population of about 14 000 inhabitants.
First mentioning of the castle and its town is from 1253. It was founded by brothers Budivoj from a famous Czech family on the old commercial route of the lower Danube region.
The name Krumlov is from the German Krumme Aue (the banded Stream).
On the crossroads of the Czech, Austrian, Bavarian and Northern Italian lands in the influence of these different cultures arose beautiful town with Castle.
The Golden Age of Krumlov was during the rule of Lords of Rozmberk (1302 - 1602), who choose it to become the seat of their large Estates. It became one of the most important castles in central Europe under these Masters of the Rose. The main development ended in 1347.
The castle surrounding was called Latran (in latin ad latera castelli) and the Old Town developed a bit later - on the other side of the river.
The cathedral of St. Vitus was built, silver and gold mining brought prosperity to the area.
The heraldic emblem of the city is the blazon of the Rozmberk family - the five red petals, rose on a silver background.
In 1601 Petr Vok sold Krumlov to the Habsburg emperor Rudolph II.
Castle Baroque Theatre (still operational - real historical treasury!) was built and the Castle gardens were renovated during the reign of House of Eggenberg in 17th century. Eggenberg family received Krumlov for loyalty to Habsburgs during the 30 year war and their reign was age of stagnation.
Krumlov gained its Baroque character under the rule of House of Schwarzenberg, who inherited lovely site. Krumlov, inspired by the style of the Viennese Imperial Court, returned back to its position of the cultural and artistic centre for a short time - only to loose it in the end of the 19th century. It ceased to be an aristocratic residence and economic stagnation followed.
This helped to preserve medieval character of the Old Town in unique volume until now (only fortification walls and guard towers were demolished).
The word Cesky (Czech) was added in front of the name Krumlov at the beginning of the 20th century.
Rigid regime of Communistic era led to other preservation of large architectonic areas to 1989 when it was listed by UNESCO as a world heritage. Many thousands of guests from all over the world inspired many artists to return back and made it cultural centre of large region again.
Castle over the meandering Vltava River, narrow cobblestone streets, romantic patrician houses with exhibits of various artists...it is charming Cesky Krumlov of these days.
Numerous music festivals, concerts, and theatre performances take place here.
Ancient taverns, inns and coffee shops are typical places for meeting of natives with visitors of all kind.
Historic Center of Cesky Krumlov in Brno, Czech Republic
Český Krumlov is a town in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. Its historic centre, centred around the Český Krumlov Castle, has been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 and was given this status along with the historic Prague castle district.
The town's name begins with Český (Bohemian) to differentiate it from Moravský Krumlov in south Moravia.
The settlement arose beneath the castle, which was built from about 1240 onwards by a local branch of the noble Vítkovci family, descendants of Witiko of Prčice. The fortress was first mentioned in a 1253 deed as Chrumbenowe. According to local legend, the name derives from Middle High German krumbe ouwe which can be translated as crooked meadow, after a bend of the Vltava River. It was also mentioned in the 1255 Frauendienst poem by minnesinger Ulrich von Liechtenstein. Located at a ford of an important trade route in the Kingdom of Bohemia, a settlement arose soon afterwards below the castle. The Czech name Krumlov is documented as early as in 1259.
In 1302 the Vítkovci line became extinct and King Wenceslaus II ceded the town and castle to the Rosenberg family (Rožmberkové). Peter I of Rosenberg, the Lord Chamberlain of King John of Bohemia, resided here and had the present upper castle erected in the early 14th century. The majority of inhabitants were German-speaking at that time, having migrated from neighbouring Austria and Bavaria in the course of the Ostsiedlung. A Jewish community is documented since 1334. By 1336, Czechs may have formed a small minority, which had its own priest.
The Rosenbergs strongly promoted trade and crafts within the town walls. In the late 15th century, when gold was found next to the town, German miners came to settle, which shifted the ethnic balance even more. In one of the churches the sermons were preached in Czech until 1788, when St. Jošt Church was closed. William of Rosenberg (1535–1592), High Treasurer and High Burgrave of Bohemia, had the castle rebuilt in a Renaissance style.
In 1602 William's brother Peter Vok of Rosenberg (1539–1611) sold Krumlov to the Habsburg emperor Rudolf II, who gave it to his natural son Julius d'Austria. After the Bohemian Revolt and the 1620 Battle of White Mountain, Emperor Ferdinand II gave Krumlov to the noble House of Eggenberg and the town became seat of the mediate[clarification needed] Duchy of Krumlov. From 1719 until 1947 the castle belonged to the House of Schwarzenberg.
There were 8,662 inhabitants in Krummau an der Moldau in 1910, including 7,367 Germans and 1,295 Czechs. After the First World War, the city was part of the Bohemian Forest Region which was initially declared to be part of German-Austria. By the end of 1918 the Czechoslovak army had occupied the region, which became part of Czechoslovakia. In 1938 it was annexed by Nazi Germany, as part of the Reichsgau Oberdonau unit of Sudetenland under the Munich agreement. After World War II the town's long-standing German-speaking population was expelled and the town was returned to Czechoslovakia.
During the Communist era of Czechoslovakia, historic Krumlov fell into disrepair, but since the Velvet Revolution of 1989 much of the town's former beauty has been restored, and it is now a popular holiday destination, with large numbers of tourists from Europe and from Asian countries such as China and Japan. In August 2002, the town was damaged in a great flood of the Vltava River.

It is relatively unique in that it is surrounded by a moat filled not with water, but with bears. This was an attempt the erstwhile rulers of the castle to associate themselves with the powerful Orsini family - whose name is a pun on the Italian word for bear; orso.

STORYLINE:
On April 29th 2013 a powerful explosion damaged a building in the centre of the Czech capital, Prague on Monday, injuring up to 40 people. Authorities said some people could be buried amongst the rubble.
Police said they were not yet certain what caused the blast in Divadelni Street, but it was likely a natural gas explosion
The street was covered with rubble and sealed off by police officers who also evacuated people from nearby buildings and closed a wide area around the scene.
The head of the rescue service in Prague, Zdenek Schwarz, said up to 40 people had been injured.
Others spoke of a narrow escape.
I was in the bathroom, no windows, the door was closed... Honestly, if I had been in my bed I would have been covered in glass, said Z.B. Haislip, an American student staying nearby.
Windows in buildings located hundreds of metres (yards) from the blast were shattered, including some in the nearby National Theatre.
