Today the Crawdad Hunter Family is exploring the Coconino National Forest in Northern Arizona.
This is one of the most diverse National Forests in the united states with landscapes ranging from the famous red rocks of Sedona to Ponderosa pine forests.
Our adventures have taken us to the Ponderosa pines that surround the San Francisco Peaks. A volcanic mountain range just north of Flagstaff Arizona. Almost all hills and mountains between Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon have been created by volcanic activity. The tallest of these is Humphreys Peak rising 12,633 feet into the Arizona sky.
The first volcanoes in this area began to erupt about 6 million years ago. Scientist are studying these volcanoes and there hasn't been an eruption for nearly 1,000 years. Even with all of our research and technology it is still impossible to know the next time there will be an eruption.
When I think of volcanos I think of huge mountains spitting moulton rock into the sky and when I think of Museums I think of buildings in the city. Today we will be exploring an underground museum created by a volcano 700,000 years ago. This Museum is what is know as a lava tube and it extends 3/4s of a mile under the Ponderosa forest above.
It's called Lava River Cave and it’s a Museum that was made by nature. It is a place where people can learn about about lava tubes by actually climbing through one. This Museum has no front door it is simply a hole in the ground in the middle of the forest.
Warning: Cave exploration can be extremely dangerous and you should never explore any cave without adult supervision. Always make sure you have multiple light sources, a map so you don't get lost and never ever explore a cave alone.
Now that we have covered safety lets start exploring.
Cave Features
Lava River Cave is the longest cave of this kind in Arizona. It was probably formed within a few hours after a brief volcanic eruption. As the lava flows from the volcano it creates a river of molten rock. The top layer begins to cool and hardens. The lava below continues to flow carving its way into the earth. As the lava flow stops the molten rock drains out leaving a tube of lava rock behind.
The lava flow features in this cave include flow ripples, splashdowns, cooling cracks and lavasicles.
Flow ripples can be observed on most of the floor throughout the last two thirds of the cave. This gives the floor the appearance of a frozen river. Actually the floor is a frozen river of lava which flowed through the cave shortly after the walls and ceiling hardened.
Splashdowns appear to be rocks floating on the frozen river because they actually were. Shortly after the ceiling hardened a few rocks fell into the still flowing floor and floated downstream a little ways before the floor also hardened.
Cooling cracks are long cracks in the floor, ceiling and walls. Some of these are six inches wide, three feet deep and over twenty feet long. These cracks formed as the lava cooled and hardened because lava shrinks when it cools.
Lavasicles are very small icicle-like formations which formed after the walls and ceiling hardened. For some reason a hot blast of gas shot through the tube shortly after it formed and partially re-melted the walls and ceiling. This caused drips of re-melted lava to form and quickly hardened into lavasicles.
Temperature - inside the temperature is 35 degrees and sometimes there is ice!
There are two reasons that temperatures within the cave remain so cold:
First, the lava rock which formed the cave is an excellent insulator. Its dark color and very dense composition prevent heat from traveling from the surface into the cave.
Second, Lava River Cave is cold because of its general shape. The highest point of the cave is the entrance. Since hot air rises and cold air falls, cold air falls into the cave during winter and is trapped there throughout the summer.
Lava River Cave is occasionally used by animals and insects. These include crickets, beetles, porcupines, squirrels and bats. Unfortunately we didn't come across any of these creatures on our trip.

Massive Lava River Cave - Newberry National Volcanic Monument, Oregon
Another world exists underground in Oregon's longest lava tube. Descend into darkness as we navigate over 100 stairs near the entrance to the cave. The lava tube is over one mile long and is about fifty feet under ground. It was created by a massive lava flow many years ago.
We were required to have two light sources per person before we entered the self-guided cave. The temperature was a COLD 40 degrees and it took us almost two hours to explore the entire cave. Most people turned back before reaching the end of the lava tube. The warm September sun was welcomed after returning from what felt like the inside of a refrigerator!
This sequence was captured by a Canon Vixia HFS-100 camera in an extreme low-light (sometimes no-light) environment. Post production was with Adobe Premier Pro 6.0.

Me and Dean are residing in the Pacific Northwest of wonderful Washington State. We always knew we didn't want to live the status quo life of working a dead end job, having children at a young age, or watching television 5 hours a day. We didn't quit our jobs to travel and we didn't uproot our life away from our family. We choose to work during the week and adventure on the weekends, hoping to inspire others to live life more fully and to never become stagnant no matter what your situation is. Our adventures consist of hiking, backpacking, water activities, farm life, exploring new areas, and snowboarding in the winter. We adventure all year round and adventures will be posted every Monday. Stay happy and humble, friends!
