Le Havre, France
Le Havre is an urban French commune and city in the Seine-Maritime department in the Haute-Normandie region of north-western France. It is situated on the right bank of the estuary of the river Seine on the Channel south-west of the Pays de Caux.
Its port is the second largest in France, after that of Marseille, for total traffic, and the largest French container port. The name Le Havre means the harbour or the port.
Today Le Havre remains deeply influenced by its work and maritime traditions.
The inhabitants of the commune are known as Havrais or Havraises,

Le Havre is a major port in northern France's Normandy region, where the Seine River meets the English Channel.
It's joined to the city across the estuary, Honfleur, by the Pont de Normandie cable-stayed bridge. Following WWII, Le Havre's heavily damaged city center was famously redesigned by Belgian architect Auguste Perret. Today it features many landmark examples of reinforced-concrete architecture.

The port of Le Havre is the second largest commercial port in France after Marseilles. In terms of cargo handling, it is the tenth-largest port in Europe. With the setting sun, we cross the Seine river and we make our way to the sea, immediately after the hotel check-in. At the sweeping beach we find a number of inviting restaurants for diner. The red glowing sun and the kite surfers convey a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. Due to the extensive sandy beach and the wide boulevards, the city could make a name for itself as relaxation and vacation spot.
The next morning we begin our exploration of the city right at the port. The remains of the Atlantic Wall from World War 2 are still present at the docks everywhere.
The most important turnover of the port is made with Mineral-oil products. Some refineries take care of the processing. Besides that, however, Le Havre is also an important container and passenger port. The largest container ships can call at the port without problems, as can be easily observed at the CMA CGM Alaska.
Furthermore, Le Havre has a large marina and a small fishing port. Not only cruise ships like the AIDAcara but also ferries from and to England, use the passenger port.

Le Havre was heavily damaged by bombing at the end of the 2nd World War. 5000 people were killed, 12,500 buildings destroyed.
The architect's office Auguste Perret planned the reconstruction. According to their plans, the Church of St. Joseph, which resembles a lighthouse was built. At the Bassin du Commerce in the city center, Oscar Niemeyer built a cultural center that due to its shape is called Le Volcan. Not far away, in the north, you find the city hall with a 72 m high tower and in front of it Europe's largest city hall square.
In 2005, the entire city center was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The remains of the old Fort de Tourneville, built around 1860, today houses the city archives and a number of cultural facilities. Outstanding is the Tetris project with a concert hall and recording studio.
The Fort de Sainte Adresse, a citadelle was built on the western end of the ridge. Here, the hanging gardens of Le Havre, called Jardins suspendus, were inaugurated in 2008; Today, you find 3700 different plants in this botanic garden.
Between the two forts, a number of manor houses have been preserved, some of which are looking for new owners.
From here you have the most beautiful view over the city.

In diesem botanischen Garten findet man heute 3700 verschiedene Pflanzen.

Le Havre is a major port town and entry point for ferries arriving in France from the UK, situated on the coast in Upper Normandy on the mouth of the River Seine. Le Havre was very badly damaged during World War II, and much of the city that we see today was as designed by the architect Auguste Perret in the post-war period.
The modernist architecture in Le Havre is unlike any other town in France - and can appear rather 'brutal' to those who aren't enthusiasts of post-war architect. Nonetheless there are some fascinating and noteworthy buildings to admire and a visit is recommended. Note that the redevelopment of the city is so noteworthy that the city has now been designated a UNESCO World heritage site.
A visit to Le Havre will include some particular buildings that are important in understanding the work of Auguste Perret. Your route can start from the Church of Saint Joseph, a post-war building in which the octagonal tower, over 100 metres high, stands out in particular. The work was begun by Auguste Perret, but it was completed after his death by students linked to his school.
Undoubtedly the central point for art in Le Havre is the famous André-Malraux Museum of Modern Art (another modern building but in glass rather than concrete). Known throughout Europe for its collection of Impressionist painters, there is actually much else to enjoy in the museum, including some artefacts in ivory and precious ceramics from Rouen and Normandy.
The Museum highlight is undoubtedly the collection of Impressionist painters, enriched by donations over the course of time and including outstanding works of Monet (1840-1926), undisputed master of the movement (living from 1883 at Giverny, where you can visit his house). In the Museum you can admire the beautiful 'Water Lilies' by Monet.
Among the other sites that attract visitors to Le Havre are the square next to the Town Hall - another building by Auguste Perret, a long concrete building with a tall tower, but the effect is softened by the plants and fountains in the square - and the Cathedral Notre-Dame, which has been extensively restored. To learn more about historic Le Havre you can visit the 'Museum of Old Le Havre' (Musee de l'Ancien Havre). Although nobody would probably choose Le Havre as their holiday resort, the beach also continues to attract visitors: Le Havre was firmly established as a resort in the early 20th century with the establishment of baths and a broad promenade frequented by Parisian tourists.

Administratively the commune is located in the Upper Normandy region and, with Dieppe, is one of the two sub-prefectures of the Seine-Maritime department. Le Havre is the capital of the canton and since 1974 has been the see of the diocese of Le Havre.
Le Havre is the most populous commune of Upper Normandy, although the total population of the greater Le Havre conurbation is smaller than that of Rouen. It is also the second largest subprefecture in France (after Reims).
The Port 2000 project increased the container capacity to compete with ports of northern Europe, transformed the southern districts of the city, and ocean liners returned. In 2005 UNESCO inscribed the central city of Le Havre as a World Heritage Site. The André Malraux Modern Art Museum is the second of France for the number of impressionist paintings.
