Leeds Castle, 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Maidstone, Kent, England, dates back to 1119. In 1278 the castle came into the hands of King Edward I, for whom it became a favourite residence. The castle seen today dates mostly from the 19th century and is built on islands in a lake formed by the River Len to the east of the village of Leeds.
Built in 1119 by Robert de Crevecoeur as a Norman stronghold, Leeds Castle descended through the de Crevecoeur family until the 1260s.[1] What form this first castle took is uncertain because it was rebuilt and transformed in the following centuries. However, Adrian Pettifer speculates that it may have been a motte and bailey.[2]

In 1278, the castle became the property of King Edward I. As a favoured residence of Edward's, Leeds Castle saw considerable investment. The king enhanced its defences, and it was probably Edward who created the lake which surrounds the castle. A barbican spanning three islands was also built. Leeds Castle was also fitted with accommodation fit for royalty: a gloriette with apartments for the king and queen were added.[3] In the Late Middle Ages, the growth of the royal household meant fewer residences could accommodate the monarchy when they visited. As a result, the expenditure on royal residences in south east England generally decreased except for the Tower of London and Windsor Castle. The activity at Leeds Castle during the reign of Edward I is a notable exception to this pattern.[4]

The castle was captured on 31 October 1321 by the forces of Edward II from Margaret de Clare, Baroness Badlesmere, wife of the castle's constable, Bartholomew de Badlesmere, 1st Baron Badlesmere who had left her in charge during his absence. The King had besieged Leeds after she had refused Edward's consort Isabella of France admittance in her husband's absence; when the latter had sought to force an entry, Lady Badlesmere had instructed her archers to fire upon the Queen and her party, six of whom were killed.[5] Lady Badlesmere was taken and kept prisoner in the Tower of London until November 1322.[6] After Edward II died in 1327 his widow took over Leeds Castle as her primary residence.[7]

Richard II's first wife, Anne of Bohemia, spent the winter of 1381 at the castle on her way to be married to the king. In 1395, Richard received the French chronicler Jean Froissart there, as described in Froissart's Chronicles.

Segwaying at Leeds Castle Maidstone Kent

Hi You Tubers and Friends,

This was my first time on a Segway at Leeds Castle grounds Maidstone, Kent.

Segways are not legal on UK roads or footpaths - sadly and can only be used on private land.

Its like riding a bike once you get the hang of it and great fun without the exercise!

This was a deferred Fathers Day present from my son James who has done this before.

Special thanks to Ami from Southern Segways based at Leeds Castle who is featured in the video giving me training and who undertook the tour and history of the Castle and grounds.

Special thanks to James for editing the video and we used a GoPro Hero 4 and a iPhone to capture the event.

The last private owner of the castle was the Hon. Olive, Lady Baillie, daughter of Almeric Paget, 1st Baron Queenborough and his first wife, Pauline Payne Whitney, an American heiress. Lady Baillie bought the castle in 1926

Tried to make it shorter, it was 27 minutes long! lol, Some of the video got messed up, but I edited what I could. This castle was nice, but still used at times to this day, so it was more modern than most. It was more like a fancy mansion inside, than a Ye-ol Castle. The Hedge Maze made it all worth it though!

Leeds Castle has been a favorite hangout of kings, queens, lords, and ladies for some 900 years. The gardens and grounds are fabulous. Set in a valley of the River Len in Maidstone, the castle is a trove of art treasures, antiques, and history. Built by one of William the Conqueror's Norman lords in 1119, the castle passed into royal hands in 1278 and became part of the queen's dower. Edward i, Edward III, Richard II, and Henry V all held court here. But it was Henry VIII who dressed it up and turned it from a fortress into a palace for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Later, Elizabeth I was imprisoned here prior to her coronation. Be sure to visit the dog collar museum with more than 500 antique collars spanning five centuries of royal dogs.

Henry VIII transformed the castle in 1519 for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. A painting commemorating his meeting with Francis I of France still hangs there.

In 1552 Leeds Castle was granted to Sir Anthony St Leger (d.1559) of Ulcombe, Kent, whose grandfather Ralph I St Leger (d.1470), of Ulcombe, Sheriff of Kent in 1467/8, had been Constable of Leeds Castle.


The maze at Leeds Castle was made with 2,400 yew trees and was opened in 1988.
An aviary was added in 1980 and by 2011 it contained over 100 species, but it was decided to close it in October 2012 as it was felt the foundation could make better use of the £200,000 a year it cost to keep the aviary running. The castle and its grounds are a major leisure destination with a maze that is exited through a shell grotto, a golf course and what may be the world's only museum of dog collars. There are two castle-themed children's adventure play areas targeted at the under sevens and the under fourteens.

It is a Grade I listed building (first listed in 1952) and recognised as an internationally important structure. In 1998 Leeds Castle was one of 57 heritage sites in England to receive more than 200,000 visitors. According to figures released by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions, nearly 564,483 people visited the castle in 2015 however visitor numbers fell by 30% in July 2015 as a result of Operation Stack on the M20 during the migrants crisis in Calais. On 8 July 2006, Irish vocal pop band Westlife held a concert for their Face to Face Tour supporting their album Face to Face.

Film location
The castle was a location for the 1949 Ealing Comedy film Kind Hearts and Coronets, where it stood in for 'Chalfont', ancestral home of the aristocratic d'Ascoyne family.

It also appeared in the films The Moonraker (1958) and Waltz of the Toreadors (1962).

On the small screen, the castle and grounds provided all the filming locations for a Doctor Who serial, The Androids of Tara, in 1978. Sir Cliff Richard, filmed a live concert here, with Leeds Castle as a backdrop, titled, Castles in
the Air.
