Lehigh Gorge State Park in Pennsylvania
Slalakum: Where the campfire light meets the dark of night... Join us on our hike along the treacherous trails of Glen Onoko Falls at Lehigh Gorge State Park in Weatherly, Pa. The hike is very scenic as we venture up the mountain along the flowing waters , investigating possible signs of Big Foot as we go along. Also, there are many relics in the park from years long passed. The magnificent Hotel Wahneta once graced the mountainside at Lehigh Gorge, bringing in many visitors via the train. The falls also hold a legend of a love sick Indian maiden. It is said that she threw herself from the falls when she was forbidden to be with her love.

Waterfall Hunt - Glen Onoko Trail in Lehigh Gorge State Park, PA
We didn't have to hike very far to get to the rushing water of Glen Onoko Falls. Nestled in the Lehigh Gorge State Park, this trail was one of the most amazing hikes. It's free (YAY), rocky, challenging, slippery, and dangerous, which made for an AWESOME adventure for every age in our family!
We started at the furthest parking lot from the entrance. There was pretty good signage and we didn't feel lost. The trail does loop (we learned from another hiker), but this wasn't my husband's first time here so we followed his lead and started off on an unmarked trail and hiked alongside the rushing water; then made our way to the marked trail with orange blazes. Our watches didn't track our distance very well, but the way we did it I would say it was 2 miles up to the top and back down. We spent about 2 hours hiking, maybe a little more because we stopped and played and took our time. I just saw that the trail loop is on the All Trails app and you can view the distance there - I believe that's just over 2 miles. We're glad we went the way we did, we spent all of our time by the water, which was so very beautiful. The pictures and videos just don't do it justice, the hike and the 2 larger waterfalls were soooo impressive!
IMPORTANT TIP: Proper footwear is necessary! I think my sneakers would've worked against me on this hike and I believe I would've gotten hurt had we worn sneakers. I'm so glad I got hiking boots the night before at the Mountain Warehouse outlet in the clearance section. They were perfect. As far as ages this hike is appropriate for, our youngest is 6 and he did well, but we had to tell him to slow down a lot because it was so steep and rocky and slippery in spots. He wanted to run and frolic and we had to keep reminding him to go slow. I wouldn't recommend this hike for any younger than 6. Also, GREAT NEWS, my bear bells and bear spray from Amazon came in the mail so we felt more prepared than we have for past hikes. YEAH!
It was ANOTHER GREAT DAY! :)
Fullerton to Albrightsville via Lehigh Tunnel, Pennsylvania, USA
Fullerton is a census-designated place (CDP) in Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Fullerton is a suburb of Allentown, in the Lehigh Valley region of the state. Originally known as Ferndale, the town was located on tracts of land originally settled by Giles Windsor (1767), Stephen Snyder (1786) and Jacob Yundt (1826). In 1895, the town was renamed Fullerton in honor of local businessman James W. Fuller Jr., who had purchased the railroad car wheel factory of Frederick & Company in 1865 and operated it as McKee, Fuller & Co.
Albrightsville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Kidder and Penn Forest townships, Carbon County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is drained by Mud Run (which forms the township boundary) westward into the Lehigh River. Pennsylvania Routes 534 and 903 intersect at the eastern corner of the village. The Holiday Pocono community is directly to the north, across PA 534, and Towamensing Trails is directly across PA 903 to the southeast. The community is just east of Hickory Run State Park.

Lehigh Gorge State Park Rail Trail Safety and Etiquette Video - Presented by: PoconoBikeRental.com
The Lehigh Gorge Trail has safety and etiquette rules to follow while on the trail hiking or biking. This video will outline the important rules and guidelines of the Lehigh State Park Rail Trail system.
The 6,107 acres of park land follow the Lehigh River from Francis E. Walter Dam in the north to Jim Thorpe in the south. The Lehigh Gorge Trail follows over 20 miles of abandoned railroad grade along the river, providing opportunities for hiking, bicycling, sightseeing and photography. The trail is closed to motor vehicles.
A deep, steep-walled gorge carved by a river, thick vegetation, rock outcroppings and waterfalls characterize Lehigh Gorge State Park. In Luzerne and Carbon counties in eastern Pennsylvania, the park follows the Lehigh River from the outlet of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Francis E. Walter Dam at the northern end, to the town of Jim Thorpe at the southern end of the park. Whitewater boating and biking are popular activities.
Parking areas are provided in White Haven, Rockport and Glen Onoko. Very limited parking is available at Lehigh Tannery but boat launching is prohibited.
The Lehigh Gorge Trail is open for biking. Wide tires are recommended. Bicycle rentals and shuttle service are available throughout the area.
Remember:
- The trail is shared by hikers, bikers and other users so be cautious and aware of your surroundings at all times.
- Keep right except to pass and pass at a similar speed as the trail users you are passing.
- Announce passing to other users with a loud ON YOUR LEFT!
- Pass with caution. Yield to small children and families.
- Move off the trail when stopped.
- Please yield to law enforcement, maintenance and emergency vehicles
- All true medical emergencies call 911
- DCNR Vehicles are not patrolling to give rides to tired people so don't ask, Thank you.

Reading & Northern: Fall in the Lehigh Scenic Gorge
On October 17, 2015, the Lehigh Gorge is abuzz with tourists and cyclists enjoying the mild fall weather amidst the onset of yellow and orange hues. No stranger to this location is the Lehigh Scenic Gorge train, powered by SD50 #426, running the routine excursions from Jim Thorpe to Old Penn Haven.

The train departs the old Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) station in historic downtown, traveling north along the Lehigh River which carved a winding path through the mountains. The CNJ and Lehigh Valley Railroads both had double-track main lines through the Gorge for many decades until their demise to new ownership under Conrail, which too, is long gone. In the present day, the track along-side of the trail, which is on one of the former railroad track roadbeds, is owned and operated by the Reading & Northern railroad. The far track along the hillside is operated by Norfolk Southern, a Class I railroad with over 22,500 miles of track in the eastern United States.
Though at one time several passenger and freight trains passed through the gorge, very few rail traffic runs through this region in the present, most of which operates through the night. The Lehigh Scenic Gorge Railway, operated by the Reading & Northern Railroad, is the main attraction on these rails, with hourly excursions throughout the day, year-round. The open-air cars provide a unique experience of this remote region.

Glen Onoko Falls/Broad Mountain - Lehigh Gorge State Park and SGL 141, PA
Opps I just did some research and found out Pennsylvania recently outlawed drones in all but six state parks and this one is not on the list and there are limited areas within those state parks. As to help spread the word and fly safe I have listed the drone friendly Pa. State Parks and a link to official parks website. Happy flying. The bureau permits drone and other UAS use at six designated flying sites within the following state parks.
Beltzville State Park
Benjamin Rush State Park
Hillman State Park
Lackawanna State Park
Prompton State Park
Tuscarora State Park
Drone and UAS operators need to contact the park office of the flying site that they plan to visit to ensure compliance with all rules and regulations. Please be advised that the entire park at each of these locations is not open to UAS or drone usage. Only the designated flying site within each park is open to UAS use.
The use of drones or other UAS is restricted at all other Bureau of State park locations.

2016 D&L Trail WhiteHaven, PA
Stayed at Lehigh Gorge RV in White Haven (RV trip) and road into White Haven to the D&L rails-to-trails bike path. Nice and well-kept and a very pretty ride. The small town has a grocery, etc., for those needing it. A bike shop can shuttle you up hill if need be, but we found it a minor grade and fairly easy on hybrid bikes. I post this for other bikers interested in how the trail might look.
Lehigh Gorge Trail - Cycling VLOG #1 - Northeast PA rail trail with tons of waterfalls
Took a trip into northeast Pennsylvania to visit Jim Thorpe and Lehigh Gorge State Park to ride the rail trail known as the Lehigh Gorge Trail. The trail is approx 26 miles one-way and runs generally north to south.
Along the way are a half-dozen waterfalls to see plus a scenic railroad and beautiful river views.
Many choose to be shuttled north to White Haven, PA in order to enjoy a leisurely ride downhill. This video is from the perspective of starting from the south in Jim Thorpe, I turn around then visit the waterfalls on my way back south.
Forgive me as I didn't record much toward the end of the video.
This video starts in the Glen Onoko parking area, this is free parking open dawn to dusk and avoids the pedestrians on the trail closer toward Jim Thorpe.
Approx. Mileage from Glen Onoko/D&L Trail parking area:
Penn Haven (Railroad Junction): 6 mi
Luke's Falls: 14.5 mi
Rockport/Restrooms: 15 mi
Buttermilk Falls: 16 mi
White Haven: 26ish mi
