렝쏘이스 국립공원으로 들어가는 관문 도시 바헤이리냐스에 도착했다. 이곳에서부턴 4륜구동 차량으로 갈아타야 한다. 차가 달린 다기 보다는 모래 위를 미끄러진다. 40여분을 달려 사막 입구에 도착 여기서부턴 걸어가야 한다. 푸른 하늘과 하얀 사막 그리고 사람들 눈앞의 풍경은 단순했지만 아름다웠다. 바람이 생각보다 강했다. 모래 알갱이들이 다리에 부딪혀 따끔따끔 했다. 강한 바람은 모래를 옮기고 세월은 사막의 지도를 바꾼다. “여기 오실 때는 꼭 가이드와 같이 와야 해요. 왜냐하면, 관광객이 길을 잃을 가능성이 너무 커요.” 그런데 사막 군데군데 풀이 난 곳이 보인다. 우기 때 호수였던 곳들인데 물은 말랐지만 아직 풀은 남아 있다. “비가 오면 사막 중간에 호수들이 생겨요. 왜냐하면 사막 아래가 진흙 토양이라 비가 오면 빗물을 흡수하지 못해요.” 건기에는 대부분의 호수들이 말라버리지만 마르지 않는 호수도 있다. 이곳은 가족에겐 즐거운 놀이터가 되고 연인에겐 사랑을 속삭이는 둘 만의 공간이 된다. 신기한 건 이 호수에 물고기가 살고 있다는 것이다. 호수가 사라진 흰모래 사막 대서양에서 불어오는 뜨거운 바람이 모래 물결을 만들고 있다. 모래 언덕에서 일몰을 보는 것으로 사막여행은 끝이 났다.

Lagoons Among Dunes: Brazil’s Disappearing Desert Oases
With large expanses of sweeping sand dunes, Lençóis Maranhenses might appear to be your average desert. But for six months of the year, crystal blue lagoons turn the arid region into a cool summer hot spot. Located in the Brazilian state of Maranhão, the national park is inundated with rainstorms from January to June of every year. The rainwater that collects between the sand dunes paints a stunning landscape covered in thousands of crystal clear lagoons.

Backpacking Brazil for two months: Jan-Mar, 2017.
After a chill visit to Sao Luis, Gabrielle invited me to check out the breath taking Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, just outside of Barreirinhas where we stayed to fill up on supplies and find a guide willing to take us through the desert. This vast dessert landscape is not only amazing because it receives around 1,200 millimetres (47 in) of rain per year, but because it was once a thriving forest. This forest still lives underneath the entire landscape, absorbing water through the various lagoons. This wonder desert is a living monument of a land that once stood. The energy here is unearthly, I felt like I was a character in my very own sci-fi movie the entire time. The small town of Barreirinhas was beautiful, the people were welcoming and humble. The entire experience was very refreshing.

The best of Brazil Uncovered | Lagoon Bonita Tour in Lençois Maranhenses with AVA TOURISM
The photos that we took on these tours in the North east of Brazil were some of the most impressive from our Latin American journeys. The sites were unbelievable and I can't recommend our guides enough.

Our tours left from Barreirinhas and this area is super safe unlike most places in Brazil. To get to this destination you must get a plain to Sao luis and then take a 5 hour bus which is easy to find and leaves every hour from the bus terminal if you want to be economical. Alternatively, you can book a private transfer which will cost considerably more. I was told about 300 reales, which is in the region of £75 at the current exchange.
