Was sind das fuer Menschen, die in dieser gottverlassenen Gegend Westsibiriens Leben? Die Vorfahren dieser Dorfbewohner kamen Ende des vorigen Jahrhunderts in dieses unwirtliche Land. Es waren vor allem Bauern aus den deutschen Siedlungen an der Wolga und am Schwarzen Meer. Grund und Boden waren in den rasch wachsenden Kolonisten - Deutschen Siedlungen zu knapp geworden.
Halbstadt, nicht all zu weit von Omsk entfernt, ist einer von zwei russlanddeutschen Landkreisen, die wir besuchen. 700 Kilometer davon entfernt liegt der andere: Asowo. Dritte Station ist Nowosibirsk, wo ebenfalls viele Russlanddeutsche leben.

Zhambyl region, located in the south of the Republic of Kazakhstan, was established in 1939. Geographically, its area is largely a plain. The area of the region is 144,3 square kilometers. The region borders on Karagandy region in the north, Kyrgyz Republic and South-Kazakhstan region in the south, and Almaty region in the east. There are 10 districts, 1 city under regional jurisdiction (Taraz), 3 towns under district jurisdiction - Karatau, Zhanatas, Shu, and 367 populated localities in this region. The unique characteristic of the regional extremely continental climate is its considerable aridity. The sizable area of the region is covered by the Betpak-Dala desert and Moyinkum sands and only south-western, southern and south - eastern margins are covered by the mountains (Karatau, Kyrgyz and Shy-Ili Alatau). These relief varieties lead to a great variety of the regional climate.
Flora and fauna of natural landscapes are vast and various. The vegetative world of the region comprises more
than 3 thousand types. The total area of hunting lands is 13.9 thousand hectares, where more than 40 types of animals live. Commercial fishing fund covering 27.8 thousand hectares includes 74 water reservoirs, and 73 water reservoirs are available for commercial fishing activity.
Large reservoirs are Tasotkel and Ters-Ashibulak. The prevailing commercial types of fish are silver carps, grass carps, carps, mirror carps, pike perches, breams, kraljes and Caspian roaches.
The region has three wood reserves.
By the economy sector, the region is industrial and agricultural. Industry accounts for 17.0% of the gross regional product, agriculture for 12.8%, transport and communication for 9.7%, construction for 9.5%, trade for 11.5% and other sectors for 39.5%.
