Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, Carlsbad (Passport 2 History): Traveling with Kids
Our Passport 2 History adventure to Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park in Carlsbad, California.
Rancho De Los Kiotes (literal translation: Ranch of the Spanish Daggers) near Carlsbad, California was a weekend retreat for actor Leo Carrillo, who designed the property in the style of Spanish hacienda estates. Situated on land once inhabited by the Luiseño people, the original 2,538 acres were located on an old Spanish land grant. Carrillo purchased 1,700 acres for $17 an acre in 1937, adding additional acreage two years later. Over the next few years he designed and built a working rancho (Spanish style ranch) in tribute to his ancestors who arrived in California in the 1700s.
In 1976, the city of Carlsbad acquired the 10.5 acres of the ranch that had been listed on the National Register of Historic Place Listings in 1937, and added an additional 16.4 acres to create the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park. There are 17 contributing properties on the ranch, including the main adobe house and Deedie's house, a smaller adobe artist studio built especially for his wife Edith.

I woke up on a Saturday with a sudden urge to explore. I didn’t know where I wanted to go but I knew I had to visit some place new. I checked by Bucket Travel List and found Leo Carrillo Ranch. This place was recommended by AnaKaren. Thank you AnaKaren for recommending this place I should have visited it sooner.
I got my cameras ready and headed to the ranch. I had no idea who Leo Carrillo was but apparently he was very famous in his time. After some quick research online and a short video at the visitor center I begin to admire this man. Not for his movies or his television series but for what he did for California and preserving its beauty. He worked for California Beaches and Parks Commission at some point in his life. During that time he was a key factor to the acquisition of Hearst Castle, he help developed Los Angeles Olvera Street complex and the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. After visiting all three attractions I am truly thankful that men like Leo Cabrillo were able to set aside these beautiful locations for everyone to see.
When I arrived to the Ranch it seemed empty due to the size. I entered the visitor center and I was greeted by a friendly staff who gave me information about the ranch and allowed me to see a 10 minute video. After the short film I walked alone and just took my time. I did go on the free tour guide because I know I wanted to sit down and admire the ranch. Since this place is used for wedding receptions, the pool area of the ranch as well as the cabana were being occupied by the wedding planner and set up crew. I was not able to access that area however I did take photos from far away. I did enjoy my time there, it was truly relaxing and did not have the feel of a tourist attraction, it was more like a an invitation to someone’s ranch. I saw several people take food to enjoy a picnic on the ranch grounds. I highly recommend this since it is a quiet place to enjoy a nice meal.

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch
The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch
I drove out to the Flower Fields in Carlsbad yesterday; April 26, 2013 and it was spectacular! The fields are fully in bloom in spring, the weather is sunny and gorgeous, and I had a wonderful time looking at all the beautiful ranunculus plants in full flowering mode. It costs $11.00 to get in the gate, and they allow you to bring in a picnic lunch. As you walk in the gate, there are tables and shade umbrellas placed just for eating.
I walked up the main trail after eating my lunch, enjoying the explosion of vivid yellows, oranges, reds and purple flowers - and when I got to the top of it, I turned around to see the ocean of gently swaying flowers, and the beautiful deep blue sea in the background! These are the moments I thank GOD that I live in beautiful California! There is so much natural beauty and splendor in this state!
I could have bought a ticket for the tractor pull that trucks people to the far ends of the field, but I was in the mood for a good, strong walk. And I'm glad that I walked it because I was able to stop into the Cymbidium Orchid House, The Poinsettia House, and I had fun in the Sweet Pea Maze.

In San Diego there is a phenomena called June Gloom. June Gloom is a southern California term for a weather pattern that results in cloudy, overcast skies with cool temperatures during the late spring and early summer. June Gloom in southern California is caused by the marine layer effect common to the West Coast, and is enhanced by the Catalina eddy local to southern California. May and June together are usually the cloudiest months in coastal Southern California, and today was a exemplary day for this effect. As I hiked closer to the Pacific Ocean, the sky became increasingly overcast and the lighting conditions for excellent photography eroded. Thus, many of the video clips I shot this weekend weren't as good as they could have been if this location were 5-10 miles inland. The marine layer effect, composed of stratus and/or stratocumulus clouds, is also called May Gray, No-Sky July, and Fogust as it occurs in other months, and is collectively known as Summer Bummer. It can reach 15 miles or further inland to places like Temecula, California overnight, but that is rare. Typically I'll see the June Gloom effect during the day close to the coast, only to look Eastward and see the border where it ends 5-10 miles inland, where it was sunny all day. Thus, when you buy a house in Southern California or a similar climate elsewhere in the world, you should consider that buying too close to the coast and/or too high in hill elevation is actually a bad move, in addition to being twice as expensive as living inland.
