The Kingdom of Leopards - Bera, Rajasthan
Bera, Rajasthan is famous for its density of leopard population - believed to be highest in the world. Bera has a rich wildlife to offer including Hyenas, Nilgais, Wild cats, crocodiles, hedgehogs, birds etc.
The shots of the leopards had to be taken from a very large distance at a very low light compelling the use of extreme digital zoom (260X). This has made the pictures noisy. Also my tripod misbehaved as a result of it some frames are shaky.

Rewilding The leopard hills of Jawai - The untold Story of Godwar - Bagheera's Camp
Maharaja Umaid Singh's dream of Rewilding Marwar has been taken up by his son and grand-daughter to conserve the wilds and endangered species of flora and fauna. Conserving and preserving the wetlands of Jawai and related areas for not just the leopard but Sloth Bear , small wild cat species and other mammals and reptiles besides training tribal people to be naturalist and services.
Rajasthan –not just forts and palaces but also stunning, vast landscapes and rich bio-diversity. Within Rajasthan, lies the region of Godwar. This bridge between Marwar and Mewar is a natural catchment area of the Aravalis and the term Godwar literally means knee-deep water. Here lies the largest man-made dam of Western Rajasthan built by Maharaja Umaid Singh for the people of Marwar -the Jawai dam. The Jawai - Bera region is a low-lying area scattered with igneous rock boulders that are over 850 million year old. It is the lifeline of the last green western frontier of India where man peacefully co-exists with wild animals such as sloth bears, mugger crocodiles, Hyenas, Indian Gazelle, porcupines, pangolins, leopards and numerous migratory bird species as well as highly endangered indigenous flora. Built by the founding family of Jodhpur, with the strong belief that wilderness cannot and should not be tamed, Bagheera’s Camp sits in the middle of a vast Masai-Mara-esqe plain. Their endeavor is to research and re-establish indigenous flora and fauna into an area previously decimated due to over grazing.
Bagheera’s Camp has recently launched 3 X 2 bedroom luxury suites built by tribals with local materials - a granite piece of art in the midst of the rolling hills of Jawai. Camp Bagheera – welcome to the Wild!

JAWAI INDIA'S LEOPARD HILLS
Jawai- situated in the Indian state of Rajasthan is a place where Leopards & humans coexist since many decades and more importantly without any conflict. The prehistoric granite hills of Jawai have countless cliffs & caves. Leopards when they move leave no tracks on these hills. Hence tracking Leopards here needs lot of patience. Leopards use specific caves and come out at specific times so the knowledge of their behavior and what caves to look at what time comes in very handy to be able to spot these gorgeous felines.
Jawai - a tale of humans, leopards and landscapes
Have a look at my latest documentary The Leopard Prince here:
Rarely have I been moved that deeply by a travel experience as it was the case when I visited the area of Jawai in Rajasthan, India. The raw beauty of the landscape, the inhabitants, the way they live their lifes in harmony with the wildlife of this area, and how their deep rooted culture and spiritual belief helped to conserve the biodiversity.
This is one of the rare places on earth where wild leopards and humans live together in peace.
I am very grateful to my friend Parag, who showed me this exceptional area. We had less than 48 hours to experience the place, yet I was completely fascinated. This is a magical land - an emotion which I am trying to convey by this film.
I hope that it stays this way - hence a somewhat sad undertone. You have to invest a little bit of time into this film, but I hope it is worth it for you!

Leopard vs Leopard, Aravalli Hills, Rajasthan
Jawai Dam, Village Bera (according to me Land of Bagheeras)
Now declared the Jawai Bandh Community Reserve, Bera is a small village located in the Pali district of Rajasthan. It has a classic landscape with Aravalli hills dotting scrub-land vegetation such as cactus. Hillocks with caves and rocks present here provide a perfect habitat for leopards (locally called Bagheera). Close to the village is the river Jawai and Jawai Dam which is lifeline for villagers and leopards alike.
The isolated backdrop of Bera is unique with scrubs and small trees found around. It also has dry deciduous thorn forest and dry grasslands. Leopards are main attraction here, other mammals found are Bluebull, Hyena, Jungle cats etc. Bera also boasts of varied avifauna. Waterbirds like Goose, Flamingos, Egrets, Ducks are seen around water sources. Other common birds like robins, shrikes, owls, ospreys etc are seen. Earlier about 70 leopards inhabited the hilly regions of Bera. The human-Animal conflict has somehow affected the number. Still some famous leopards of Bera are Naina, Data, Nag Vasi, Cleopatra etc.
Video Shooted February 2018.
