China steam finale - Beitai steelworks September 2011
This video features steam locomotives at work in an iron and steel works in China. Beitai is 14 km south-west of Benxi and Benxi is 84 km south-east of Shenyang.
Beiying Iron & Steel (Group) Co., Ltd is the holding subsidiary of Beitai Iron & Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. This company is located in Beitai Town, Pingshang District, Benxi City. It is an iron and steel complex incorporating mining, ore dressing, coking, power generation, sintering, iron-making, steel-making and rolling. Its annual production capacity of pig iron is 8.5 million tons, steel billet 9 million and finished steel product 10 million tons. The company has blast furnaces with total volume of 6100 cubic meters and steel converters with gross tonnage of 560 tons. It annually produces 1.5 million tons of steel bars , 3.5 million tons of wire rods, 1 million tons of medium strip and over 4 million tons of hot rolled coil.
The Beitai steelworks is located alongside the Chinese National Railway line from Liaoyang to Benxi. The site consists of two separate plants. To the east is the blast furnace area and about five kilometres further west is the steel making plant. A fleet of SY class steam locomotives is employed in and around the two plants, shunting raw materials into the blast furnace area, taking trains of molten iron to the steelworks and bringing back trains of raw materials, and dumping hot slag. Exchange sidings with the CNR exist at both sites.
Official visits are now possible in organised groups, at least when you have the right contacts. Security is tight, so illegal entry is strongly discouraged.
There are 3 groups of blast furnaces, two groups are served by steam. There are numerous diesels. Steam will probably be phased out slowly.
The steam site at Beitai is quite small compared with the former steam fleets of works at Anshan, Panzhihua, Benxi or Baotou. But Beitai remains a rare survivor of industrial steam in the steel industry. Go there before it is too late!

MARCH 2012 UPDATE
The Beitai steel works is currently building a group of new blast furnaces at the new plant, just aside the old steel mill. Once the new blast furnaces are operational (planned for end of 2012), the steel works will have enough capacity to shut down the old plant. As the new plant will use automated transportation and diesel locomotives, it will also mean the end of the use of SY steam locomotives.
Tanago has visited the steel works four times now, establishing an excellent relationship with the local management, that even allowed us to visit the mill´s running shed.
Tanago will return to Beitai later this year for a - most likely - last visit of the steam locomotives at the blast furnces, the slag trains, and fantastic night photography opportunities.

Balhae or Great Jin-guk (698-926) was a mixed ethnic Korean & Mohe kingdom established in Korea and Manchuria after the fall of Goguryeo. It existed during the North & South States Period of Korea along with Unified Silla. After Goguryeo fell to Silla, Dae Jo Young, a man from Goguryeo established Jin, later called Balhae. It was a successor state to Goguryeo. Balhae occupied southern parts of Manchuria, & the Korean peninsula. It was defeated by the Khitans in 926, & most of its territory was absorbed into the Liao Dynasty while the southern part was absorbed into other kingdoms like Goryeo. The earliest extant recorded mention of Balhae come from the Old Book of Tang, which was compiled between 941 to 945. Southern Manchuria & Korea were previously the territory of Goguryeo. Goguryeo fell to the allied forces of Silla & the Tang Dynasty in 668. The Tang annexed much of western Manchuria, while Silla unified the Korean peninsula south of the Taedong River and became Unified Silla. In the confusion of the Khitan uprising against the Tang, Dae Jung-sang a leader of the remaining people of Goguryeo, allied with Geolsa Biu, a leader of Mohe and rose against the Tang in 698. After Dae Jung-sang's death, his son Dae Jo Young, former Goguryeo general succeeded his father. Geolsa Biu died in battle against the Tang army led by the general Li Kaigu. Dae Jo Yeong managed to escape outside of the Tang controlled territory with the remaining Goguryeo and Mohe soldiers. He successfully defeated the army sent by Wu Zetian at the Battle of Cheonmun-ryeong. which enabled him to establish the state of Balhae in the former region of Yilou. Traditionally, historians believed that ethnic conflicts between the ruling Koreans & underclass Mohe weakened the state. Recent study suggests that the downfall of Balhae is largely due to the catastrophic eruption in the 10th century of Baekdu Mountain located at the center of Balhae territory. Baekdu mountain still has one of the biggest volcanic calderas in the world, Heaven Lake. Ashes of this eruption can still be found in a large area, even in a sedimentary layer in northern Japan. This massive explosion created tremendous amounts of volcanic ash, damaging agriculture & even societal integrity. Eventually, Balhae would succumb to the Khitans, an emerging power in the Liaoxi area. After destroying Balhae in 926, the Khitan established the Dongdan Kingdom, which was soon annexed by Liao in 936. Some Balhae aristocrats were moved to Liaoyang but Balhae's eastern territory remained politically independent. Some Balhae people including aristocrats, led by the last Crown Prince Dae Gwang-hyeon, fled southward to Goryeo. Many descendants of the Balhae royal family in Goryeo changed their family name to Tae while Crown Prince Dae Gwang-hyeon was given the family name Wang, the royal family name of the Goryeo dynasty. Balhae was the last state in Korean history to hold any significant territory in Manchuria. The Khitans themselves eventually succumbed to the Jurchen people, who founded the Jin Dynasty. The Jin dynasty favored the Balhae people as well as the Khitans. Jurchen proclamations emphasized the common descent of the Balhae and Jurchen people from the seven Wuji tribes, and proclaimed Jurchen and Balhae are from the same family. The fourth, fifth & seventh emperors of Jin were mothered by Balhae consorts. The 13th century census of Northern China by the Mongols distinguished Balhae from other ethnic groups such as Goryeo, Khitan & Jurchen. After the fall of Balhae & its last king in 926, it was renamed Dongdan by its new Khitan rulers, who had control over most of Balhae's old territories. However, starting from 927, many rebellions were triggered throughout the domains. These rebellions were eventually turned into several Balhae revivals. Out of these, four succeeded and established kingdoms: Later Balhae, Jeong-an, Heung-yo, & Daewon. These three kingdoms were able to temporarily chase the Khitan & their Dongdan Kingdom out into the Liaodong peninsula, but they were all eventually devastated by the Liao Empire. In 1034, Dae Gwang-hyeon, the last Crown Prince of Balhae, revolted against the Khitans. After being defeated, he fled to Goryeo, where he was granted protection & the imperial surname. This resulted in the Liao breaking off diplomatic relations with Goryeo, but there was no threat of invasion.

We are somewhere in the Qianshan National Park!
In the last episode we climbed up the side of a mountain and we start this vlog where 'that one' left off..
The views on top of the thousand mountains (China) is absolutely incredible!
You can see why they are called 1000 mountains (Qianshan)..
There is quite literally thousands of mountains.. they keep going! Wherever you look.. the mountain range goes on forever!

(Chinese: 千山国家公园; pinyin: Qiānshān; literally: Thousand mountains)
The Qianshan National Park is a mountainous national park in Liaoning Province, China, 17 km by road, south east of Anshan.(Where we were staying)
The park is in the Qianshan Mountains (Chinese: 千山山脉), named after itself, that extends from the Changbai Mountains in the China-North Korea border, westward to Liaoyang, then southward to Dalian in the southern corner of Liaoning Province.

Henan Lake Aerial View and Hatchery
Hiked to Henan Hatchery today and saw some water damage around the building. Cutthroat. During the runoff the water overpowered the hatchery and 7 cutthroat trout swam up stream. After the creek settled back within its banks the trout were trapped in the screen, not allowing them back in the lake.
A beautiful day today as I was all alone on the whole lake. Mavic drone footage of this wonderful Nevada Sierra lake.

Russo-Japanese War
The Russo-Japanese War was the first great war of the 20th century. It grew out of rival imperial ambitions of the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of operations were Southern Manchuria, specifically the area around the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden; and the seas around Korea, Japan, and the Yellow Sea.

Goryeo
Goryeo, also known as Koryŏ (Hangul: 고려; hanja: 高麗; Korean pronunciation: [koɾjʌ]; 918–1392), was a Korean dynasty established in 918 by King Taejo. This kingdom later gave name to the modern exonym for Korea. It united the Later Three Kingdoms in 936 and ruled most of the Korean peninsula until it was removed by the leader of the Joseon dynasty in 1392. The Goryeo dynasty expanded its borders to present-day Wonsan in the north-east (936–943) and the Amnok River (993) and finally almost the whole of the Korean peninsula (1374).
Two of this period's most notable products are Goryeo celadon pottery and the Tripitaka Koreana — the Buddhist scriptures (Tripitaka) carved onto roughly 80,000 woodblocks and stored, and still in, Haeinsa. Subjects and officials of the Goryeo dynasty also created the world's first metal-based movable type in 1234; the oldest surviving movable metal type book, the Jikji, was made in 1377.
