Liège, City walk - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
The Christmas markets are not the only reason for our little pre-Christmas tour. Of course, we also want to get to know some of the famous sights of the cities. In Liège, we start with a tour that takes us past the Christmas market, the Palais Provincial, and the City Hall.
The Palais Provincial is the former Prince Bishop's Palace and now houses the Government of the Province of Liège and the Palace of Justice. The Prince Bishop once united secular and ecclesiastical power. One built his seat in a correspondingly pompous manner.
In the Rue des Mineurs, we arrive at Belgium's well-known production of waffles. The queue in the street already announces the shop of Une Gaufrette Saperlipopette. Here the waffles are still baked according to the old tradition. On the opposite side of the street you can watch the production through large shop windows, but only at certain times.
In the shop window of an antique shop, our gaze falls on the Sleeping Beauty.
A few meters further, we find the church Saint-Antoine and the Musée de la Vie wallonne. Both are today jointly managed by the city of Liège. The old convent of the Friars Minor, dating from the 13th century, has been transformed into the Museum of Life Walloon.
If you turn a road to the east, into the Montagne de Bueren, you can see the staircase of the same name from afar. With 374 steps and a gradient of 30%, the Montagne de Bueren is Belgium's most extreme staircase.
At the foot of the stairs is Liège's most famous brewery. Here they brew Liège's brand, the Curtius {c}. After climbing the stairs, the beer in Brasserie C offers a welcome refreshment.
The staircase, built-in 1881, was named after Vincent van Bueren. He defended the town in the 15th century against the attack of the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold. Built to honor the 600 soldiers who died in the attack, it leads directly from the city center to the Monument au 14ème Régiment de Ligne and the Citadel of Liège.
It remains a mystery to us how the residents living along the staircase bring their furniture and purchases to the houses and remove the waste. What seems evident is that everyone is in pretty good health. But if you make it to the top, you are rewarded with an extraordinary panoramic view over Liège.

On the way to the Sunday market La Batte, at Rue du Champion, we accidentally come across a variety of graffiti and street art, including that of Didier Jaba Mathieu. The Marché de la Batte (Bat market) is Belgium's oldest and largest weekly market. The name Bat Market derives from the quay wall used to land the ships, called La Batte.
The market takes place on Sundays from 8 am to 2.30 pm along the left side of the Meuse river in Liège.
It is also one of the largest markets in Europe, with a sales area of around 10,000 m². Up to 100,000 visitors come in good weather.
Here a large selection of meat, sausages, poultry, fish, wines, fruit, and vegetables is offered. Besides, you find live animals like birds, fish, dogs, cats, and goats.
For those who are interested, there are antiques, books, CDs, and records. But also household items, clothes, shoes, stockings, and hats must not be missing.
If you are hungry, you can try some of the culinary specialties. Or you enjoy a bite in one of the numerous restaurants and cafes in the surrounding area.
Right next to the market is the Curtius Museum, a museum for archaeology and decorative arts. The building was once the manor house for Jean Curtius, an industrialist and munitions supplier for the Spanish army. In 2009 it was reopened as Grand Curtius.
Today, it houses the collections of the Archaeological Museum, the Arms Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts, and the Museum of Religious and Mosan art (MARAM).
A few steps away is the L'îlot Saint-Georges, the former Fine Arts Museum of the City of Liège (BAL). The colorful crystal flowers on the facade are the work of Spanish artist Okuda San Miguel.
However, there was not enough space in the BAL. In 2011, one decided to move the museum to the island between the Meuse and the Channel. Since 2016 the collection has been housed in La Boverie.
On the way back to our apartment, we passed the opera of Liège (Opéra Royal de Wallonie).

WHAT TO SEE IN LIEGE - Montagne de Bueren - Liège - Visit Belgium #45/589
What to see in Liège ? What are the tourist attractions in Liège ? How many steps has the Montagne the Bueren ?
A Belgian Challenge, I would like to visit all Belgian municipalities. In this video I visit Liège, the capital of the province of Liège. Although it's one of the biggest cities of Belgium, I had never been there before.
We started the day at the montagne de Bueren, which is a super long staircase, it's a bit challenging to go all the way up, but the views from the belvédère at Liege are rewarding.
We wandered around the city for the day, looking for the best places.
We stayed at the hotel called 'chez mammy' , located in an 18th century building.

Hi, I am Eileen from Belgium, nice to meet you. I started this channel some years ago but was not updating on a regular basis. After making some videos for friends and family, I realized this is something I love to do. I accepted the challenge to visit all Belgian municipalities and because I love to travel, I do it as often as possible.
JEUX SAN FRONTIERES - BELGIAN HEAT BBCtv 1976/ LIEGE BELGIUM /PART 2/2
THE ZANY OLYMPICS HEATS OF JSF 76 - THE FUN & GAMES EUROPEAN GAME SHOW THAT TOOK PLACE IN Liège, Belgium. GREAT GAMES , GREAT MEMORIES GREAT ENTHUSIASM AND THE GREAT STUART HA HA HALL COMMENTATES FROM THIS BBC AUG 1976 TRANSMISSION. ENJOY TV WHEN IT WAS FUN ALL THE WAY. MORE DETAILS BELOW:-
SPOILER ALERT BELOW IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW THE RESULT:-
Did You Know?
This heat was held in Cointe, a western suburb of the city of Liège. The games arena was located in a multi-functional leisure complex known as Le Plaine - loosely translated as The Play Area. The facilities in the complex include basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, a rifle range and a full-size football pitch surrounded by an athletics track. Each of the sports has its own particular area and is cordoned off from each other by small hand barriers. However, when the programme was held there, many of these barriers had to be removed and special flooring was laid over the courts' bases to protect the surfaces.
The programme opened with the teams being led into the arena by Le Royal Guidon Hesbignon Fanfare Cycliste de Haneffe. Comprising 50 members on bicycles (some of them on tandems), the band is located in Haneffe in the heart of the province of Liège and is one of the most active companies in the community. The band has played the role of ambassador for the city for well over 100 years, with invitations to play from not only towns in Belgium but also in France, Germany, Netherlands and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Entering the arena to some typical Belgian speciality tunes, halfway into the arena they segued into Knees Up! Mother Brown halfway through!
British team Thurrock was very unfortunate in this heat with malfunctioning equipment. On Game 3 - 'Water Tandem Ride' - a broken bicycle saddle hindered the team in completing the course - which had also hampered the Netherlands team - but a re-run was granted by referee Gennaro Olivieri for both teams. On Game 6 - 'Suspended Unicycles' - some 'faulty' equipment caused the British team to be unable to complete the course, after the suspended unicycle had come off its wire causing the equipment to jam. However, on this occasion Gennaro Olivieri refused a re-run stating that, We won't give another start because the material is quite okay. It is up to the competitors not to put out the bike.
Swiss team La Neuveville were a very strong team and had, in fact won the competition after Game 7, even before the last Fil Rouge had been played! The team participated again when they joined forces with neighbouring town Nods in 1992.
With the Dutch team Hilvarenbeek finishing in 2nd place with 40 points, they were tied with their countrymen from Pijnacker (Heat 1) in terms of qualification for the International Final. As both teams had won three games and come second in one each, qualification was ultimately decided on a countback of third place finishes, with Hilvarenbeek having achieved two to Pijnacker's one. This was the first time that an International Final competitor had been decided in this way, although a similar happening had occurred in 1975, again with the Dutch teams!
There was a summer break of four weeks between the staging and recording of International Heats 4 and 5 of Jeux Sans Frontières. This was due to the XXIst Summer Olympic Games being held in Montreal, Canada between Saturday 17th July and Sunday 1st August 1976. This break allowed broadcasters to carry live coverage of the events and free up technical, administrative and presentation staff and resources for the sporting tournament.
