Peterborough Lift Lock - The Highest of it's Type in The World!
A quick stop at the Peterborough Lift Lock, in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, along the 240 mile long Trent Severn Waterway.
The Peterborough Lift Lock is the highest of it's type in the world, with an average lift of 65'. It is also only one of five of it's type in the world, with one other being at Kirkfield, also along the Trent Severn Waterway. This is also the largest un-reinforced concrete structure in the world! Not bad for a 113 years of age :-)

Boating Through Peterborough Lift Lock - Sit Back Sunday GoPro Cruise
This 'Sit Back Sunday GoPro Boat Cruise' video (click here for the entire Playlist: takes us from Little Lake in the city of Peterborough, through Lock #20, Ashburnham Lock, and northward along Ontario, Canada's 240 mile long Trent Severn Waterway. From there, we approach the infamous and iconic Peterborough Lift Lock.
Construction was finished on this structure in 1904 and it has been servicing boaters ever since. This lock provides the highest lift of it's type anywhere in the world, effortlessly raising and lowering boats 65'. It also remains the largest un-reinforced concrete structure in the world.
If you wish to see what it looks like when approaching from the top side of this lock, take a boo at this video - - the very first in my 'Sit Back Sundays' video series. I also have a video of what it looks like to see it in action from the ground level. You can see that one by following this link -

Kawartha Voyageur - Ontario Waterway Cruises - Ackert Boat History
The Kawartha Voyageur is more than just a ship, it's a floating country inn. - Captain Marc
The ship is constructed of steel with an overall length of 120 feet. It conforms to Canadian Coast Guard safety regulations, and is licensed by the Federal Department of Transport for passenger service. Diesel generators provide electricity for heating, central air conditioning and lighting with AC 110 volt outlets.
An elevator between the cabin deck and the dining room provides all passengers an opportunity to avoid the stairs between these two levels if so desired. The dining room seats all passengers at one sitting.
The lounge offers comfortable armchairs and large windows. The popular sun deck (with shaded area) provides spectacular viewing and spaciousness to sit back and repose. The foredeck area provides a proximity to the water that many enjoy.
Sleeping cabins are compact, but comfortable, with toilet, sink, twin lower berths and a screened window. The ship is equipped with one cabin to accommodate a person with a walker. The ship is not wheelchair accessible.
Cabin #7 has a lower berth. The single supplement of 75% does not apply to this cabin.

Houseboating in Peterborough & the Kawarthas: Float Your Boat
Cruise the world renowned Trent-Severn Waterway on a houseboat in Peterborough & the Kawarthas
Peterborough, Ontario Liftlock in operation.
Here is some video I shot August 4th at the Peterborough, Ontario Lift Lock on the Trent-Severn Waterway.
It begins with the tour boat in the lower lock chamber and the gate rising to seal the chamber. The second lock chamber is some 65 feet above us at this point. The upper chamber has one more foot of water in it than the lower chamber. That makes it many tons heavier than the lower chamber.
Once everything is ready, the operator pushes a button that opens a valve that controls the flow of water between the two huge hydraulic cylinders that support the two chambers.
If you have ever seen the hydraulic lift used by many garages to raise your car so the mechanic can work below it, you may recognize the technology, only it is on a vastly larger scale here.
Once the valve opens, the heavier upper chamber begins to fall, forcing water through a connection pipe into the lower chamber's cylinder, forcing it to rise. There is no power involved other then that provided by gravity and the weight of water.
Once the upper chamber has risen to the top, the valve connecting the two cylinders is closed, locking them in place. Next, the gate at the front of the now upper chamber will open, allowing an extra foot of water into that chamber. The gate on the second chamber, which is now at the lower position, opens letting a foot of water out. The boats in the two chambers exit and the system is now ready to repeat the cycle.
As you watch this keep in mind that this device went into operation 112 years ago. Other than some technology upgrades the system remains pretty much exactly as it was designed and built in 1904.

Due to its proximity to the greater Toronto area, the Kawartha Lakes and the Severn River are very busy in the summer with a wide range of boaters. Our Kawartha cruises showcase a greater diversity of engineering including the Peterborough Lift Lock, the Kirkfield Lift Lock and the Big Chute Marine Railway.
In 1920, the Trent-Severn Waterway was opened to thru navigation across central Ontario from Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. This 386 km stretch of scenic lakes, rivers and locks was created over a period of 87 years in conjunction with the water transport needs of the local lumber industry and the neighbouring communities. Subsequent ongoing development and improvements to the infrastructure since 1920 have resulted in a modern recreational waterway which locks over 120,000 boats per season.
Parks Canada is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the 43 locks and 125 dams controlling the water flows in this 18,600 sq km area. Of the 22 locks we travel through, there are some manually operated “heritage” locks as well as modern hydraulic locks built to service the areas of heavier boat traffic.

The Lift Lock Cruise (720p)
How do you drive a boat 70 feet straight up in the air?
*re-uploaded with better video (18,000kbps)*
The Peterborough Lift Lock is a boat lift located on the Trent Canal in the city of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada and is Lock 21 on the Trent-Severn Waterway.
The dual lifts are the highest hydraulic boat lifts in the world, with a lift of 19.8 m (65 ft). This was a considerable accomplishment at the time when conventional locks usually only had a 2 m (7 ft) rise.
No external power is needed: the lift lock functions by gravity alone using the counterweight principle. One caisson always ascends, and one always descends during each locking cycle.
The lift lock was designed by Richard Birdsall Rogers, a superintendent of the Trent Canal (part of the Trent-Severn Waterway). In 1896, he traveled to France, Belgium and England to see existing examples in operation.
Construction was by Corry and Laverdure of Peterborough, which excavated the site and built the concrete towers and lock, and Dominion Bridge Company of Montreal, which completed the metal work including rams, presses and large caissons, and was finished in 1904. The lift lock officially opened to the public to a crowd of thousands on 9 July 1904, and remains in full use today.
Le Boat Canada Cruise (Part 1)
Hey you guys! Thanks for joining me on another journey. This week finds me in Ottawa, Canada. I was invited by my best friend, Eric and his fiancee, Jen to join them on a private yacht cruise of the Rideau Canal and its lock system. We were the first Le Boat horizon 3 cruise tour to embark in Canada. Before taking the train to Smiths Falls to begin our boat journey, I got up for sunrise in Ottawa and explored the city on foot. What a lovely city it is! I was very impressed with the cleanliness and friendliness I discovered. I thoroughly enjoyed the juxtaposition of the classic & modern architecture. Checking out the Ottawa River was quite amazing; I thought it was very cool to see the whitewater rapids right there in the city. And the crazy currents were interesting to see. In case you didn't know, Ottawa is Canada’s capital. It is located in the east of southern Ontario, near the city of Montréal and the U.S. border. Sitting on the Ottawa River, it has Parliament Hill in the city center, with grand Victorian architecture and museums like the National Gallery of Canada, which features indigenous and other Canadian art. Being in Ottawa in late spring was about perfect; the tulips and cherry blossoms added pretty pops of color to the already nice city walk. After our hour-long train ride to Smiths Falls, we took a local cab from the train station to the docks. Le Boat oriented us on the vessel and the Rideau Canal, as well as the operation/hours of the lock system. Le Boat says... One of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century, the Rideau Canal is the oldest continuously-operated canal system in North America. Traveling this attractive waterway, you'll be able to unwind and take in the spectacular nature, picturesque towns and lively cities of this UNESCO (which stands for
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site. Before setting sail, we went to the local grocery store to stock up on groceries for our week cruising the canal. We got to go through several locks before docking in Perth. Once there, we went ashore to explore the town. It's a quaint place with some cute shops, museums and restaurants. We met a local lady who told us we should go to Rocky River for dinner. The super friendly & open people made for an amazing time there, along with the pleasant ambiance and freshly delicious food. Jen loved their coconut creme pie. Overall, it was a fabulous day in Canada!
