Litomyšl: Historical Town of the year 2000
CMS TV
The East Bohemian town of Litomysl emerged in the 13th century on the site of an older fortified settlement on the Trstenice path - an important trading route linking Bohemia and Moravia.
The dominant feature of Litomysl is the monumental Renaissance castle dating from the years 1568 - 1581. The buildings of the castle precincts are not only exceptional for their architectural refinement, but have also inscribed themselves in history as the birthplace of the Czech national composer, Bedrich Smetana. On the elongated square, which is one of the largest in the Czech Republic, stands a town hall of Gothic origin and a series of Renaissance and baroque houses, many with arcades and vaulted groundfloor rooms. One of the most important of these is the House At the Knights (U Rytíru) with its remarkable facade. In the past the town was also a significant religious centre; it was in Litomysl in 1344 that the second bishopric to be established in Bohemia was founded.
The cultural traditions of the town go much beyond regional and national frontiers. The exquisite interiors of the castle, especially the baroque castle theatre, the amphitheatre in the castle park and Smetanas' house, all offer varied programmes of concerts and theatrical performances and thus emrich the life of the town throughout the year. Litomysl came to public notice in a political context as well: in 1994 the meeting of the seven Central European presidents took place at the castle, and in 1995 the Spanish royal couple visited the town. The chateau complex was included in the UNESCO List of cultural monuments 1999. Litomysl was awarded Historical Town of the year 2000.

Litomysl (Czech Republic) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Litomysl in Czech Repuclic.
Samye Gonba is the oldest monastery in Tibet and one of the most important historic landmarks in Yarlung’s Valley Of Kings. A circular wall that contains a hundred and eight chortens surrounds the large monastery complex. The Samye Monastery was designed strictly according to the Buddhist principles of the universe and India’s Temple Of Otantapuri served as its model. The main temple in the centre of the monastery symbolises the mystical Mount Meru that is surrounded by four temples, each located in one of the four directions of the compass. The introduction of Buddhist monastery culture and the decline in the Bon system of faith with its demonic beliefs, gave Tibetan society a new structure. Despite its great age and dramatic history, Samye is still one of the most beautiful and unique religious sanctuaries in Tibet.

Litomyšl Castle (UNESCO/NHK)
Litomyšl Castle was originally a Renaissance arcade-castle of the type first developed in Italy and then adopted and greatly developed in central Europe in the 16th century. Its design and decoration are particularly fine, including the later High-Baroque features added in the 18th century. It preserves intact the range of ancillary buildings associated with an aristocratic residence of this type.

Litomyšl Castle Theatre
English and German subtitles are available.
For more information and pictures about this theatre please visit
Litomyšl Castle, a UNESCO monument, was built in 1567--1581. A castle theatre came into existence in the 18th century in the second floor, A second one was built in the ground floor after 1791. Count Jiří Josef Valdštejn-Vartemberk completed an alteration of the castle interior by the construction of the present-day theatre in 1796 -- 1797. It was opened in April of 1798 and it had a rich cultural life until the 2nd half of the 19th century. Members of the count's family and their friends performed popular high comedies here not only for their pleasure, but for the audience from the town as well. The theatre has been preserved to the present day, including stage machinery and lighting equipment. Great value is attributed to a unique collection of set pieces that was created by Josef Platzer, an imperial court painter, author of decorations for the Prague Nostitz (Estate) Theatre (1783) and the Viennese court theatre. The theatre is accessible with a guide within the tour of the castle interiors; some of the Platzer's decorations are installed in the exposition of musical instruments in the second floor.

Take a tour of Town of Litomysl in Litomysl, Czech Republic -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The Czech town of Litomysl is a delightful medieval town, which features its own castle.
Prior to the thirteenth century, the land here was occupied by another fortified city, built along an established road of trade.
The current city grew up along with its sixteenth century castle, which is a superb work of beauty.
Situated along one of the castle's exterior walls is a uniquely designed two-dimensional sundial.
The grounds of the castle are also worth seeing, adorned with green lawns and well-trimmed hedges and shrubs.
The town square is a great place for a walk and is lit up brilliantly after darkness falls.
