Litomysl (Czech Republic) Travel
Take a tour of Town of Litomysl in Litomysl, Czech Republic -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The Czech town of Litomysl is a delightful medieval town, which features its own castle.
Prior to the thirteenth century, the land here was occupied by another fortified city, built along an established road of trade.
The current city grew up along with its sixteenth century castle, which is a superb work of beauty.
Situated along one of the castle's exterior walls is a uniquely designed two-dimensional sundial.
The grounds of the castle are also worth seeing, adorned with green lawns and well-trimmed hedges and shrubs.
The town square is a great place for a walk and is lit up brilliantly after darkness falls.
Litomyšl: Historical Town of the year 2000
CMS TV
The East Bohemian town of Litomysl emerged in the 13th century on the site of an older fortified settlement on the Trstenice path - an important trading route linking Bohemia and Moravia.
The dominant feature of Litomysl is the monumental Renaissance castle dating from the years 1568 - 1581. The buildings of the castle precincts are not only exceptional for their architectural refinement, but have also inscribed themselves in history as the birthplace of the Czech national composer, Bedrich Smetana. On the elongated square, which is one of the largest in the Czech Republic, stands a town hall of Gothic origin and a series of Renaissance and baroque houses, many with arcades and vaulted groundfloor rooms. One of the most important of these is the House At the Knights (U Rytíru) with its remarkable facade. In the past the town was also a significant religious centre; it was in Litomysl in 1344 that the second bishopric to be established in Bohemia was founded.
The cultural traditions of the town go much beyond regional and national frontiers. The exquisite interiors of the castle, especially the baroque castle theatre, the amphitheatre in the castle park and Smetanas' house, all offer varied programmes of concerts and theatrical performances and thus emrich the life of the town throughout the year. Litomysl came to public notice in a political context as well: in 1994 the meeting of the seven Central European presidents took place at the castle, and in 1995 the Spanish royal couple visited the town. The chateau complex was included in the UNESCO List of cultural monuments 1999. Litomysl was awarded Historical Town of the year 2000.

Dalibor Tower (Daliborka) was built in the fifteenth century. It is located at the end of the Golden Lane at Prague Castle in Prague.
Now The tower is a museum of torture instruments, which date back from the Middle Ages to the late eighteenth century.

This 15-16th Century construction was home to a wealthy General who enjoyed only 12 months of its existence before being assassinated in 1634. The Czech Republic (officially known by its short name, Czechia) is a small landlocked country in Central Europe, situated southeast of Germany and bordering Austria to the south, Poland to the north and Slovakia to the southeast.
The Czech Republic is not a geographically large country, but it has a rich and eventful history. From time immemorial, Czechs, Germans, Jews and Slovaks, as well as Italian stonemasons and stucco workers, French tradesmen and deserters from Napoleon’s army, have all lived and worked here, all influencing one another. For centuries they jointly cultivated their land, creating works that still command respect and admiration today. It is thanks to their inventiveness and skill that this small country is graced with hundreds of ancient castles, monasteries and stately mansions, and even entire towns that give the impression of being comprehensive artifacts. The Czech Republic contains a vast amount of architectural treasure, as well as beautiful forests and mountains to match.
Regions:
The Czech Republic has 14 political regions (kraj) which can be grouped together into eight general regions:
Central Bohemia (Prague, Kutná Hora, Karlštejn)
The metropolitan centre of the Czech Republic with its capital city, known for its river valleys, extinct volcanic mounds, and green pastures.
West Bohemia (Pilsen, Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně, Františkovy Lázně)
A forested and mountainous region, home of the pilsner beer, numerous spas towns, and the Bohemian Forest (Šumava).
North Bohemia (Liberec, Ústí nad Labem, Děčín, Bohemian Paradise)
A mountainous and coal mining region with a strong industrial past, and the location of the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) and parts of the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše). Site to numerous winter resorts.
East Bohemia (Hradec Králové, Pardubice, Litomyšl, Špindlerův Mlýn)
Main location of the highly-popular Giant Mountains (Krkonoše) and the Czech Republic's highest peak, Sněžka.
South Bohemia (České Budějovice, Český Krumlov, Třeboň)
Hilly, forested landscapes, and the source of the Vltava River. A highly popular area for rafters in the summer.
Bohemian-Moravian Highlands (Telč, Třebíč, Žďár nad Sázavou)
A very green and uneven region, considered the geographic heart of the country.
North Moravia (Ostrava, Olomouc, Opava, Litovel)
A highly industrial region which includes Czech Silesia, although dotted with beautiful hills and mountains.
South Moravia (Brno, Znojmo, Zlín, Lednice-Valtice)
Well-known for its rural and slow pace of life, warm summers, rolling vineyards, and its potent plum brandy (slivovice).
Cities:
Prague (Praha) — the country's capital and largest city, and one of Europe's premier tourist destinations. Its large and beautiful historical core is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Brno — the largest city in Moravia and the republic's second city, with several excellent museums, an accessible old town, a stunning cathedral, and the annual Grand Prix.
České Budějovice – known also as Budweis, an attractive city in South Bohemia with an impressive old town square.
Český Krumlov — a stunning medieval and Renaissance town in South Bohemia, home to the country's second largest palace, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Karlovy Vary — a historic spa resort and the republic's largest, especially popular with German and Russian tourists, and the site of the country's most prestigious film festival.
Kutná Hora — a historical medieval town in Central Bohemia, home to St. Barbara's Church, old silver mines, and the Sedlec Ossuary, decorated with tens of thousands of human remains. Its attractions are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Olomouc — a riverside university town with a thousand-year history, and the second largest historical centre in the Czech Republic after Prague.
Ostrava — a vibrant and sometimes gritty blue collar city with a strong subculture, and a long history of coal mining and steel production.
Opava — the former capital of Silesia.
Pilsen (Plzeň) — home of the original Pilsner Urquell beer and the Škoda Works, and the largest city in West Bohemia.
Telč — a perfectly preserved Renaissance town centre surrounded by shallow man-made lakes. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Zlín - Beautiful example of functionalistic architecture inspired by garden cities of Le Corbusier and rebuilt by Baťa shoemaker family. The town is set in small hills, nature, zoo and spa literally behind a hill.

Kromeriz - Moravia, Czech Republic
Kromeriz, in southern Moravia, about 60 km from Brno and 270 km from Prague is a quiet town with a beautiful center and a relaxing place to visit.
The Kromeriz Castle, it's parks and the Kromeriz Flower Gardens are listed as Unesco World Heritage monuments but there are many other parts of the town of Kromeriz which are worth visiting and will make your stay even more complete and worthwile.
Kroměříž stands on the site of an earlier ford across the River Morava, at the foot of the Chriby mountain range which dominates the central part of Moravia. The gardens and castle of Kroměříž are an exceptionally complete and well-preserved example of a European Baroque princely residence and its gardens.

Czech Republic (Europe) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Czech Republic.
Prague, the Czech Republic’s capital, ‘Golden City’, is full of history. The entrance to the historic centre of Stare Mesto is formed by the Late Gothic, Powder Tower. The Altstädter Ring is known as the heart of the city and the large Old Town Square is framed by magnificent, elegant town houses and churches. The most famous of all the bridges across the Vltava is the Charles Bridge from where the Coronation route led from Vyšehrad to Prague Castle on the Hradschin. Kutna Hora is situated close to Prague and historically is one of the country’s most important cities and rightly referred to as a treasure chest. Due to valuable deposits of silver, apart from Prague, it was the most important city in the Kingdom of Bohemia from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century. In the peaceful hills of Bohemia’s Moravian Highlands, is Litomyšl and its splendid mediaeval marketplace. It was once located on an important trading route, a fact that enabled its inhabitants to enjoy much prosperity. The tranquil town of Kromĕříž in the southeast of todays’ Czech Republic is a milestone of nineteenth century Habsburgian history. Following the devastation of the Thirty Years’ War, Bishop Charles Liechtenstein had the castle rebuilt. Kromĕříž Castle was the traditional summer residence of the bishops of Olomouc and became a key influence in the town’s cultural life. In the west is Telč, once an important trading post between Prague and Vienna. In the thirteenth century the small settlement was protected by a castle and in the fourteenth century was granted the status of a city. Today it is considered to be the most beautiful mediaeval town in the Czech Republic. Picturesque villages, impressive castles and mediaeval towns have made this country into a priceless gem. Here fairy tales and legends still blossom and today the Czech Republic is most certainly a cultural land set within the very heart of Europe.
