NICARAGUA: EXOTIC ANIMALS BEING SOLD ILLEGALLY TO NEAR EXTINCTION
Spanish/Nat
Nicaragua's exotic animals and birds are being sold illegally, to near extinction.
They are sold at hidden posts along the border to foreign buyers who mostly come from Europe and the United States.
The perpetrators of this illegal trade are usually poor and unemployed farmers who need the money to survive.
An increase in unemployment throughout Nicaragua has also lead to an increase in the illegal trade of the country's exotic birds and animals.
The preservation area in the forest of Bosawas is where many unemployed farm workers capture their prey.
Ocelots, lizards and armadillos are being caught, as are exotic birds.
The birds and animals which are sold are listed as endangered species and traders are guilty of forcing some to near extinction.
But it is a story of the survival of man pitched against the survival of animals.
SOUNDBITE (Spanish)
The situation is hard. I have to hunt these and I have to fish by the beach to survive.
SUPER CAPTION: Jose Saballos, iguana vendor
In an economy which cannot support its unemployed, it is often the farm workers who are forced to make money illegally so that they can feed their families.
Camilo Lara, who is dedicated to saving animals from extinction, says that many of the animals can rarely be seen by Nicaraguans, except on television or in books.
SOUNDBITE (Spanish)
Parrots, the Mountain cat, the Manati tiger, ... I'm mentioning animals that for us, the Nicaraguans, are already nothing but an illusion. We can only see them in films, books and magazines, which means students, our youngsters, our kids, have no longer the pleasure of seeing some of these species, while before, our grandfathers could see them in the wild.
SUPER CAPTION: Camilo Lara, Director of Environmental Education Programme, Nicaraguan Foundation for Preservation and Development.
Up and down the country, Nicaraguan farmers transport the birds and animals to traders in the capital city, Managua.
Here they are put up for sale to buyers who come mainly from Europe and the United States.
In order to get the animals out of the country, traders have hidden posts along the country's border with Honduras or Costa Rica.
SOUNDBITE (Spanish)
We are poor. We capture animals to help us go on. I've got a big family and there is not a single job around.
SUPER CAPTION: Estanislao Mendiola, wild animal vendor
The fight for survival is a hard one.
Until an alternative can be found for Nicaragua's unemployed, hungry children will continue to be fed at the expense of the country's rare and endangered animal species.
