Ljubljana is the capital and largest city of Slovenia. It has been the cultural, educational, economic, political, and administrative center of independent Slovenia since 1991.
During antiquity, a Roman city called Emona stood in the area. Ljubljana itself was first mentioned in the first half of the 12th century. Situated at the middle of a trade route between the northern Adriatic Sea and the Danube region, it was the historical capital of Carniola, one of the Slovene-inhabited parts of the Habsburg Monarchy. It was under Habsburg rule from the Middle Ages until the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918. After World War II, Ljubljana became the capital of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia, part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It retained this status until Slovenia became independent in 1991 and Ljubljana became capital of the newly formed state.
The city, with an area of 163.8 square kilometers, is situated in the Ljubljana Basin in Central Slovenia, between the Alps and the Karst. The extent of Ljubljana has changed considerably in the past 40 years, mainly because some of the nearby settlements have merged with Ljubljana.
The city's architecture is a mix of styles. Despite the appearance of large buildings, especially at the city's edge, Ljubljana's historic center remains intact. Although the oldest architecture has been preserved from the Roman period, Ljubljana's downtown got its outline in the Middle Ages. After the 1511 earthquake, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style following Italian, particularly Venetian, models.
After the quake in 1895, it was once again rebuilt, this time in the Vienna Secession style, which today is juxtaposed against the earlier Baroque style buildings that remain. Large sectors built in the inter-war period often include a personal touch by the architects Jože Plečnik and Ivan Vurnik. In the second half of the 20th century, parts of Ljubljana were redesigned by Edvard Ravnikar
The central square in Ljubljana is Prešeren Square where the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation is located. Built between 1646 and 1660, it replaced an older Gothic church on the same site. The layout takes the form of an early-Baroque basilica with one nave and two rows of lateral chapels. The Baroque main altar was executed by the sculptor Francesco Robba. Much of the original frescos were ruined by the cracks in the ceiling caused by the Ljubljana earthquake in 1895. The new frescos were painted by the Slovene impressionist painter Matej Sternen.
Ljubljana Castle is a medieval castle with Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural elements, located on the summit of Castle Hill, which dominates the city center. The area surrounding today's castle has been continuously inhabited since 1200 BC. The castle was built in the 12th century and was a residence of the Margraves, later the Dukes of Carniola. The castle's Viewing Tower dates to 1848; this was inhabited by a guard whose duty it was to fire cannons warning the city in case of fire or announcing important visitors or events, a function the castle still holds today. Cultural events and weddings also take place there. Since 2006, a funicular has linked the city center to the castle atop the hill.
Town Hall, located at Town Square, is the seat of the City Municipality of Ljubljana. The original building was built in a Gothic style in 1484. Between 1717 and 1719, the building underwent a Baroque renovation with a Venetian inspiration by the architect Gregor Maček, Sr. Near Town Hall, at Town Square, stands a replica of the Baroque Robba Fountain. The original has been moved into the National Gallery in 2006. The Robba Fountain is decorated with an obelisk at the foot of which there are three figures in white marble symbolising the three chief rivers of Carniola. It is work of Francesco Robba, who designed numerous other Baroque statues in the city.
Ljubljana Cathedral, or St. Nicholas's Cathedral, serves the Archdiocese of Ljubljana. Easily identifiable due to its green dome and twin towers, it is located at Cyril and Methodius Square by the nearby Ljubljana Central Market and Town Hall. The Diocese of Ljubljana was set up in 1461. Between 1701 and 1706, the Jesuit architect Andrea Pozzo designed the Baroque church with two side chapels shaped in the form of a Latin cross. The dome was built in the center in 1841. The interior is decorated with Baroque frescos painted by Giulio Quaglio between 1703–1706 and 1721–1723.

The symbol of this city is the Ljubljana Dragon. You can find it on the top of the tower of the Ljubljana Castle and on the Ljubljanica crossing Dragon Bridge.
The architecture of the city is a mix of different styles. The city center remains intact although at the city edges the appearance of large buildings grows.
Due a large numbers of earthquakes the architecutre in Ljubljana changed after each rebuilding. Today there are leftovers from the last rebuilding in the Vienna Secession style mixed with Baroque remains.

Moving on now.. walking all the way up to Ljubljana Castle. This walk will give an awesome view of the city below. This is the only reason why i went up. I left the kids and went here alone. If you are looking for videos of inside the castle, you will be disappointed. I did not go in. After being on the road for sometime and seeing countless castles and churches, my appetite to go inside just disappeared.
After that we moved on to the Shoemaker's or Cobblers' bridge. Old town Ljubljana is known for the beautiful bridges. Spent a little bit of time here and very close by was another centre square with a nice fountain. Let the kids play here for a while and we continued our visit.

Ljubljana is the capital of the young republic of Slovenia, a city of culture and history, elegance and charm. It is Slovenia’s ‘Florence’ situated between the Alps and the Balkans, the Adriatic and Lake Balaton. The Old Place, with a monument of national poet, Prešeren, is the gateway to the Old Town. With its pink marble façade, the Early Baroque Franciscan Church Of Mary dominates the square. The Dom Church Stolnica was built according to the design of Venetian, Andrea Pozzo in the 17th century. The interior of this Baroque church is quite overwhelming and with great attention to detail. Situated on the four hundred metre high Castle Hill, the Slovenian Acropolis was once inhabited by the Illyrians and Celts. The Roman watchtower later became both a strategic fortress and castle. A triumphal arch marks the entrance to the Žale Cemetery on the northeast edge of the city with a number of fine, richly decorated chapels. Here Jože Plečnik created a masterpiece that represented the transition from the world of the living, to the world of the dead. Columns flank the main path up to Tivoli Castle that was built by the Jesuits in the seventeenth century and soon became a summer residence of the bishops. Romantic lakes with water fowl and pretty flowers embellish the park, once the home of Field Marshal Radetzky. Ljubljana is a city of joie de vivre and pleasure where the Middle Ages, Baroque and Art Nouveau meet with the relaxed lifestyle of the south!

Ljubljana is Slovenia's capital and largest city. It's known for its university population and green spaces, including expansive Tivoli Park. The curving Ljubljanica River, lined in outdoor cafes, divides the city's old town from its commercial hub. Ljubljana has many museums, including the National Museum of Slovenia, displaying historic exhibitions, and the Museum of Modern Art, home to 20th-century Slovene paintings and sculptures.
Ljubljana Food Tour with Slovenia Guides - Ljubljana, Slovenia
I was lucky enough to be invited on the Ljubljana Food Tour with Slovenia Guides. We started off with a tour of the Old Town, the fish market, the veggie market, meat market, then got to sample some delicious cheese, homemade bread, and beef tongue. Then we moved on to an old restaurant and had a big plate of meat, sausage, sour cabbage and sour turnip. Next we had some spicy goulash which was excellent, then some pasta. We visited a chocolate shop and sampled some amazing chocolates, and finished off with a traditional dessert.
Everything was so good, one of my favorite food tours of my trip! My guide told me about the restaurant in the castle, Chef Ana Roš was voted the best female chef in the world so I had to try it. That was one great day of eating for me from morning until evening. Thanks again Slovenia Guides!

1. Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most) – Dating back to 1901, the bridge was built for the 40th anniversary of Emperor Franc Jožef I’s rule and it symbolizes the history, beauty and architectural style of Ljubljana. Those dragons have been integrated into the city’s coat of arms, and as a result they are found all around Ljubljana.

Central Market – The lively open-air market has always been a place for the locals to meet and enjoy themselves. Ljubljana Central Market is open daily (except Sundays). You can buy all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and dairy products, flowers and plants, spices, medicinal herbs, textiles and footwear, local arts and crafts.

Tivoli Park – Tivoli Park is the green heart of Ljubljana the its biggest. Located on the northern outskirts of the Center District, it offers facilities such as playgrounds, fountains, ponds, exhibitions, mansions and sports facilities.

Ljubljanica River – The Ljubljanica River is the main river that runs through the old town of Ljubljana and divides the medieval center with the rest of the city. There is an abundant amount of cafes & restaurants lining the Ljubljanica river which makes it the perfect spot for sitting and watching how the world goes by. A walk along the river is a good way to discover the beautiful Ljubljana decorated by many bridges throughout the river.

Triple Bridge – Ljubljana`s Three Bridges are probably the most beautiful and well-known of all bridges in the city. It is made up of three bridges that connect the modern city to the Old Town. This area is packed with bars and restaurants, and it is a popular spot for photographs.

Preseren Square – Located in the old town, Prešeren Square is the central square of Ljubljana. Surrounded by exquisite architecture (such as the salmon pink Franciscan Church), the cobbled plaza is a major meeting point, where Ljubljana’s carnival, concerts, and festivals take place. At the eastern side of the square, you will find a bronze statue of the influential Slovenian poet France Prešeren.

Ljubljana Castle – Ljubljana Castle, a hard-to-miss symbol of the city, is situated on a small hill in the center of Ljubljana, 60 meters (196 ft) above the old town. Some parts of today’s structure date back to the 15th century; this mighty medieval fortress has served as military housing as well as the royal residence for several centuries. Inside the castle there is the Chapel of St. George (1489), redone later in Baroque style, and decorated in 1747 with the colorful coat-of-arms of Carniolian provincial governors. Nowadays the castle represents an oasis in the middle of the Ljubljana’s old town, where people can relax or go for a walk. Moreover, it serves as a venue for cultural and entertaining events.

Cathedral of St Nicholas – This magnificent Baroque cathedral with its twin towers and the green colored dome was built to honor Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of fishermen and boatmen. It dates back to the early 18th century, but was renovated and had beautifully carved bronze doors added for the Pope John Paul II’s visit in 1996.

Metelkova Mesto – Metelkova Mesto is an alternative cultural center that developed from a squat in a former army barracks and became one of the liveliest cultural, artistic, social and intellectual urban areas in Ljubljana, it brings together a variety of different artistic practices and events. The area is now home to countless bars and clubs and it is also where you will find some really unique exhibitions, public art and graffiti. It is very colorful, with people from all walks of life, including anyone from students and underground music fans to visitors of Ljubljana and professionals enjoying a night out.

Congress Square (Kongresni trg square) – The square was built in 1821 and it was used for ceremonial purposes during the Congress of Ljubljana. It is surrounded by leafy green trees and some of the most important buildings in Ljubljana such as the Ursuline Church, the Slovenian Philharmonic and the University of Ljubljana.

Ljubljana is the capital and largest city of Slovenia.
Ljubljana has a nickname Little Prague because it is a charming town full of artists, museums, galleries, restaurants and cafes.
Prešeren Square, the central square in the city, formed in the 17th century, when the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation was built.
At the eastern side of the square, the Statue of France Preseren, for the greatest poet in the nation, was erected.
The Triple Bridge connects the square with the old medieval town.
In this historical part of the city is situated St Nicholas's Cathedral, one of the most important churches in Slovenia.
Also in the old town, but a bit away from the main tourist area, is the St James’s Church which houses beautiful altars.
The seat of the City Municipality of Ljubljana, the Town Hall, stands at major square in the center, close to Ljubljana Cathedral.
The Parliament of Slovenia, another government building, is located in front of the Republic Square, a place with a significant importance for Slovene history.
The University of Ljubljana, the largest and the oldest university in the country, brings together students to whom the city owes much of its youthful character.
A stone throw from the university is one of the most important national, educational and cultural institutions of Slovenia, the National and University Library.
Ljubljana is the cultural center that can be seen at every step, besides many open space exhibitions, there are also many museums, such as:
The International Center of Graphic Arts in Tivoli Park.
The country’s oldest scientific and cultural institution, the National Museum.
The National Gallery, an exhibition hall that hosts the best national art.
The Museum of Modern Art which presents art works from the last century.
It’s also worth a visit the Metelkova City, once a military barrack, now a self-declared autonomous culture place.
The Museum of Contemporary Art, with many present day paintings and sculptures. In the same neighborhood as the Ethnographic Museum which exhibits multinational artifacts.
The Ljubljana Castle, the city’s most striking landmark, is a medieval castle built in the 12th century on the summit of Castle Hill. It is a tourist sight and a picturesque venue for events.
From the castle’s tower stretches a magnificent view of all the city.
A good place to see the town from other perspectives is from the Skyscraper.
On top of the building is a bar with excellent views.
