Ghost of Llancaiach Fawr Manor ~ Nelson~ South Wales
It is believe that there was probably an earlier dwelling on the site, either underneath the present house or possibly incorporated within the eastern end of the building.
It was previously thought that Llancaiach Fawr Manor predates the Acts of Union between Wales and England of 1536 and was mentioned in John Leland’s Itinerary of 1537.
However, tree ring dating carried out by the Time Team suggests a felling date for the roof timbers ( those which have sufficient sap wood left to test) of between 1548-1565, later than was originally thought.

Most Haunted Llancaiach Fawr Manor here
Previous residents, members of staff and many visitors can all testify to uncanny events. If there's one person who knows what it's like to live in a haunted house, it's Ed Williams.
He claims to have seen things, heard things and even smelled things which would make the rest of us chilled to the bone.
They include footsteps above his head while watching television, a tall man rushing past him at speed and the chilling results of using a ouija board.
Ed lived at Llancaiach Fawr Manor House, Caerphilly, from 1950-1985
It was his childhood home before the property was sold to what was then Rhymney Valley District Council who converted the imposing mid-16th century house into the Living History Museum that it is today.
I regularly heard four, distinct and loud footsteps above me when watching TV in the living room. If I had to guess, I would say male.
There was never any rhyme or reason to when the footsteps happened, but there were always four of them.
I never went to look for them - as far as I was concerned as long as they didn't bother me, I didn't bother them.
Ed once saw a tall man rushing past him at speed.
It was a summer evening, it wasn't dark and there was a function in the manor. I was helping to bring dishes back to the visitor centre.
As I was walking down the garden, a figure - I would definitely say Victorian with a stove pipe hat and a black cloak - ran very quickly past me. He was as plain as day to me.
The other staff remember me being visibly shaken by that visitation as it occurred on a bright day.
There was a rumour that circulated afterwards that I ran after him - I can assure you, I didn't!
When I was a teenager, and on reflection it wasn't the cleverest of things to do in this house, I decided to produce a ouija board.
We put the letters out, we put the glass in the centre - there were three of us - and we all put our fingers on the glass and said, 'Is there anyone there?' and the glass shot across the room and smashed into the fireplace.
Within 20 seconds we had put it all away and never attempted that again!
After the visitors had gone, I was taking my friend on a tour around the manor, and the front door, which is very heavy with a heavy latch, was closed.
When we were on the first floor, both of us heard the door open. When we came straight down there was no-one there.
General manager Diane Walker has had experiences which can't be explained - not that she spooks that easily mind you.
Lots of visitors who come here are sceptical about the house's reputation as being 'haunted'.
But when they give us feedback about their experiences, the most common comment is people saying they feel that they've been joined by a child spirit.
Lots of visitors and staff hear nosies which they describe as being childish, such as blowing raspberries and distant laughter. So could it really be the ghost of a child so many people talk about?
Recent research by the Friends of Llancaiach Fawr found evidence that a child did actually die at the house in Edwardian times by falling from a second storey window.
Diane adds: If you ask me the house is still active. Once we had this lady who came to the house and did a tour.
After it, she was pretty speechless. She had a new coat on, had never worn it before, and when she came back to the visitor centre, all the buttons from the coat were gone.
Gone?
Yes, totally gone.
And it's not just the house and garden that supply all of the unusual happenings - the staff say the visitor centre has an equal amount of intrigue.

The Mystery of the Manor Moat | Time Team (Medieval Archaeology Documentary) | Timeline
The team and experts head to Llancaiach Fawr manor, near Caerphilly, South Wales, to investigate an ancient moat. The team's geophysicists feel the site should provide them with the ideal conditions to determine what the ditch was originally designed to guard - but the project soon becomes one of the most baffling investigations in the programme's history.

Cardiff Morris dance Seren Y Bore at Llancaiach Fawr, 25th September 2011.
Seren Y Bore is Welsh for The Morning Star. As well as being the name of a Morris dance and a left-leaning British newspaper The Morning Star is also a nick-name for the planet Venus.
With its wildly eliptical orbit and erratic spin this Morris dance is always fun to watch.
