New Zealand Road Trip: Ep 1 - Backpacking the North Island
I return to New Zealand for a 7 week road trip around both the North and South Island in this 2 part documentary series.
Episode 1 begins in the North Island, at the capital city of Wellington. Driving with my Kiwi friend Matt, he takes me off the beaten track to show me how Kiwi's enjoy their own country.
Stops include Vinegar Hill, Napier, Tokomaru Bay, Rere Rockslide and Whakatane to do the White Island Volcano Tour.
Then I take Matt on the classic backpacking trail, making him a tourist in his own country.
Stops include Auckland, Waiheke Island, Waitomo Glow Worm Caves, Rotorua, Taupo and the Tongariro Crossing.

Day 31 - Hot Water Beach To Auckland: Hometown Memories, Postcards, Fellow Travellers
Day 31 - Hot Water Beach to Auckland
Transcript, credits + links
On the last day of our trip we visited Thames - the small town where I went to high school, then drove back to Auckland and said goodbye to our motorhome.
We were planning to visit the place where I grew up in Tapu Valley - but had to change our route because of the cyclone. So that's a story for another day.
Thank you for joining us on our New Zealand tour. I hope you enjoyed it :)
We'll be back with the regular show soon.

The final stop on our major travels of 2016 was 3 weeks in New Zealand; and we wanted to see literally everything! Our main agenda was to cover as much of the South Island as possible and do as many activities as we could arrange and afford! The most exciting video to come from this series will absolutely be part two, where we visited Franz Josef, and some of the lakes and national parks of New Zealand.
Remember to check out the Jelly Journeys blog to see all our photos and more information from our road trip, such as the places we stayed and our thoughts on them!

Happy - Waimarama Beach day, Clifton, Cape Kidnappers, Ocean Beach, Falls Hawkes Bay - New Zealand
While in Sunny Hawkes Bay do yourself a Favor and take a day trip to Waimarama beach, Ocean Beach, Clifton / Cape Kidnappers and Maraetotara Falls. Napier / Hastings / Havelock North Hawkes Bay New Zealand.
What a pleasant day we had with the fam on the beach even though it is winter right now everyone was still making good use of the sun by going to the beach. Some people were still swimming and a few surfers also enjoying the waves. Long walks down the seemingly endless white beaches and children playing all sorts of beach sports.

Taupo/New Zealand:
The North Island (Māori: Te Ika-a-Māui) is one of the two main islands of New Zealand, separated from the slightly larger but much less populous South Island by Cook Strait. The island is 113,729 square kilometres (43,911 sq mi) in area, making it the world's 14th-largest island. It has a population of 3,393,900 (June 2012 estimate).
Twelve main urban areas (half of them officially cities) are in the North Island. Listing from north to south, they are Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Gisborne, New Plymouth, Napier, Hastings, Whanganui, Palmerston North, and Wellington, the capital, located at the south-west extremity of the island. Approximately 77% of New Zealand's population lives in the North Island.
Although the island has been known as the North Island for many years, the New Zealand Geographic Board has found that, along with the South Island, it has no official name. The board intends to make North Island the island's official name, along with an alternative Māori name.Although several Māori names have been used, Māori Language Commissioner Erima Henare sees Te Ika-a-Māui as the most likely choice. In April 2013, the board announced it would seek the public's input before making any official changes to the island's name.
In prose, the two main islands of New Zealand are called the North Island and the South Island, with the definite articles. It is normal to use the preposition in rather than on, for example Hamilton is in the North Island, my mother lives in the North Island. Maps, headings, tables and adjectival expressions use North Island without the.
According to Māori mythology, the North and South Islands of New Zealand arose through the actions of the demigod Māui. Māui and his brothers were fishing from their canoe (the South Island) when he caught a great fish and pulled it from the sea. While he was not looking his brothers fought over the fish and chopped it up. This great fish became the North Island and thus a Māori name for the North Island is Te Ika-a-Māui (The Fish of Māui). The mountains and valleys are believed to have been formed as a result of Māui's brothers' hacking at the fish. Until the early 20th Century, an alternative Māori name for the North Island was Aotearoa. In present Māori usage, Aotearoa is a collective name for New Zealand as a whole.Wikipedia

Tour TravelEssence has sixty Dutch out of the New Zealand Kaikoura. The earthquake last weekend, the only access road to the coastal village impassable and tourists stuck. The company has hired a plane, because assistance from the New Zealand navy still in gestation.
The tour company picks up the Dutch who have booked them in groups of eight or nine people. They are all expected to have picked up today. After that they travel to Blenheim and Wellington.

Actually, the Dutch had to wait for the arrival of the Navy, but that could take a few days. That takes us too long and that is why we have hired a plane, said a spokesman for TravelEssence.
Kaikoura was killed by the earthquake. A runway instead got hardly damaged by the quake and is now being used to rescue the tourists. In the coastal village stay more than 1,200 tourists, including so sixty Dutch.

Kupe and Cook in the Marlborough Sounds - Roadside Stories
In Māori tradition, the drowned river valleys of the Marlborough Sounds were explored by the legendary Polynesian navigator Kupe in his pursuit of a giant octopus. Many place names in the area relate to Kupe. British navigator James Cook also explored the Sounds, resting and reprovisioning his crew at Ship Cove. Whaling stations were later established.

-- About this video --
Today’s activity out of our 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand is mountain biking in Picton. The Picton mountain biking trail we are doing today is the Link Pathway between Picton and Havelock.
The Link Pathway in Picton is a great alternative to the Queen Charlotte Track. We hire some bikes from Wilderness Guides on Picton waterfront then bike straight to the start of the Link Pathway Track up the Queen Drive.
There are loads of options for mountain biking in Picton but the Link Pathway is a full one day track or half day if you return halfway along the Link Pathway track. The gradient is relatively steady on the Link Pathway in Picton so it’s even good for beginners like us.
The Link Pathway in Marlborough has some awesome views of the Marlborough Sounds, making another reason as a good alternative to the Queen Charlotte Track. By trailing through native forest and having epic views of the Queen Charlotte Sound along the way, the Link Pathway is one of the best places for mountain biking in Marlborough.
So what do you think of mountain biking in Picton? Is the Link Pathway in Marlborough something you would add to your New Zealand bucket list?

Hitch Hiking Around The South Island
Spent a week hitching around the South Island of New Zealand. Met some excellent people, and created some of the greatest memories of my life. Of course there is so much that happened which this video doesn't show... but it is a combination of some of the footage from the journey.
