A quick history
There has been a lighthouse at Loop Head since 1670. Originally, it was a coal burning brazier on a platform on the roof of the cottage lighthouse where the lightkeeper lived. You can still see part of the old cottage on the site.
The first ‘tower’ lighthouse was built in 1802 and replaced with a new tower in 1854.
In 1869 its light changed from being fixed to flashing.
Its ‘character’ is a white light flashing 4 times every 20 seconds.
The lighthouse converted to electric operation in 1971 and was automated in 1991.

Tarbert - Killimer Ferry and Loop Head County Clare Ireland.
Journey from Tarbert in Kerry to Killimer in Clare by ferry. It takes 20 minutes for the crossing. It's €28 for a car and €40 for a campervan. Then on to Loop Head Lighthouse. Saves a lot of time rather than doing the land route. The price is a rip off I think, last time I did this trip it was £10. You could fly to London with Ryanair for the price they are charging.

EDEN 2010 - Loop Head Peninsula in Co. Clare -- Kilkee (Ireland) long version
The Loop Head peninsula retains beauty and isolation while still being in a position to offer visitors a professional and unique experience of an Ireland that is forgotten by many mainstream tourist destinations. The waters were declared by Jacques Cousteau to be the finest for scuba diving in Europe. Visitors can take tour boats to admire dolphins, whales and numerous seas birds. It is famous for its impressive cliffs that dive dramatically into the sea and an incredible diversity of marine life.

I have to confirm that this is the one of the most beautiful place in Ireland I've seen. Its called Loop Head Lighthouse and its a part of the famous Wild Atlantic Way.
I found this place with the finger on the map as I went for a trip to Cliffs of Moher and just wanted to see this place which is located on the north side of the mouth of the River Shannon, in the west of Ireland, Co. Clare.
The opposite headland on the south side of the Shannon is Kerry Head. The Shannon Foynes Port Company controls navigation in the Shannon estuary and river.
Its just spectacular scenery on a not long walk and I learned a lot about these geological features along the way.
