Originally built by the French on modern-day Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, the Fortress of Louisbourg was the capital of Île Royale (Cape Breton Island), a thriving seaport with one of the busiest harbours in North America and one of France's key centres of trade and military strength in the New World. It was captured by British and New England colonial forces twice; it was destroyed the second time. In the 1940s, it was reconstructed so that today visitors can experience this exceptional fortified town.

Six new geocaches will be launched to coincide with this event - a whole new way to see the Fortress! Back in 1744, The Fortress of Louisbourg was one of the busiest harbours in North America and one of France's key centres of trade and military strength in the New World.
EVENT REPORT
The weather forecast for the day changed from 15-30cm of snow to just 5cm, so the event was a GO. The event organizers on expected around 20-40 participants. The final headcount was 72.
However at 10am at the Louisbourg Community Centre (in the same building as the fire hall), well over almost 50 participants had checked-in and were on-site at the historic Fortress. Stagunner was presenting an Intro to Geocaching for half a dozen interested people. This event was part of the Cape Breton's Winterfest & Nova Scotia's Take the Roof Off Winter, so it gathered more attention from newbies.
The Parks Staff were more than than hospitable, directing event participants to the parking area, about 5km from the current town of Louisbourg. Event participants parked behind the museum. With waypoints loaded into the GPS, it was time to walk around the property.
The great thing about the Fortress, was that you were not limited to within the Fortress walls, there was a lot of property to explore. The geocaches were placed to specifically explore areas that were no longer popular with visitors, but still offered a great history lesson.
It took about 2.5 hours to complete the treck around the Fortress, examining the reconstructed building as participants made their way to each geocache. the temperature was near freezing (0C) with light drizzle. Snowshoes were not required, but some spotd had snow well above the knee.
The wrap-up was held at Grandchamps tavern. A number of door prizes were drawn, thanks to Parks Canada, NS Health & Recreation, ACGA, Fortress of Louisbourg Association & Landsharkz for donating the prizes.
The main message is that the Fortress is open during the winter, this provides an unique view of the site and a view how French soldiers from the 17th Century would have had to endure winter conditions at the Fortress. #avoidingchores

History
The town's name was given by French military forces who founded the Fortress of Louisbourg and its fortified seaport on the southwest part of the harbour, in honour of Louis XV. The French fortress was demolished after its final capture in 1758 and the site was abandoned by British forces in 1768.
Subsequent English settlers built a small fishing village across the harbour from the abandoned site of the fortress. The village grew slowly with additional Loyalists settlers in the 1780s. The harbour grew more accessible with the construction of the second Louisbourg Lighthouse in 1842 on the site of the original French lighthouse destroyed in 1758. A railway first reached Louisbourg in 1877, but it was poorly built and abandoned after a forest fire. However the arrival of Sydney and Louisburg Railway in 1894 brought heavy volumes of winter coal exports to Louisbourg Harbour's ice-free waters as a winter coal port. The harbour was used by the Canadian government ship Montmagny in 1912 to land bodies from the sinking of the RMS Titanic.
Incorporated in 1901, the Town of Louisbourg was disincorporated when all municipal units in Cape Breton County were merged into a single tier regional municipality in 1995.
Economy
Louisbourg's economy is dominated by the seasonal tourism industry and seafood processing. The depletion of ground fish stocks has negatively affected local fish processing operations in recent decades.
In the 1960s Parks Canada completed a partial reconstruction of the Fortress of Louisbourg. Today this National Historic Site of Canada is the town's dominant economic engine, employing many residents and attracting thousands of tourists every year. The fortress holds large scale Historical reenactments every few years to mark important historical events and attract visitors to the town. The most recent in July 2008, commemorated the 250th anniversary of the first British siege victory over French forces in July 1758.[1] The town's more recent history is preserved at the Sydney and Louisburg Railway Museum located in the restored railway station in the centre of town.
Annually, the community hosts the Louisbourg Crab Fest.[3]. A large golf course and residential resort is under development near the community. Designed by Nick Faldo, the resort is expected to open in 2010[4].
Louisbourg is home to the Louisbourg Playhouse, a theatre company operating in an Elizabethan theatre that was used as a prop in the live action 1994 Disney motion picture Squanto: A Warrior's Tale.

Experience the coal-hauling times of the Sydney & Louisburg Railway and its marine connections. Words, pictures and artifacts tell the story in and around the 1895 station and engine house. An extensive model of the town's coal-to-ship transfer now occupies the freight shed. A large quilt display and vintage passenger and freight cars are seen here including Nova Scotia's oldest passenger coach, built in 1881. The Louisburg Station on Route 22 is also home to an important Visitor Information Centre.
Taken from wikipedia The Sydney and Louisburg Railway (S&L) is a historic Canadian railway. Built to transport coal from various mines to the ports of Sydney and Louisbourg, the S&L operated in the eastern part of Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia. The railway uses a slightly different spelling for the town of Louisbourg.

I first visited the Lewisburg. The Lewisburg has a fort built by French immigrants in the 18th century. People to walk along the road, Bonjour? The French word geonnenda personnel. Well, here is everything French. I can not explain something to the horse all over France come to get Inde obvious attractions, guards the entrance of the block across the street. Are you ever spy in England? No! Still does not work for the United Kingdom? Otherwise, go for shows the position of the United Kingdom and France was angsuk relationship. Lewisburg is where cod fishing was prosperous fishery. These people seem to residents throughout the town stands out. Children playing heunggyeopda appearance. But it should not live in an adult or child and the actual town. However, the purpose dareudeut each building of the fort, who also has a role each one of their own.I met people who feel the time back to hundreds of years ago. The army barracks there with the bag on top of a hill overlooking the fort. The outfit also French soldiers. Lewisburg fort lost its original appearance since losing to England in 1961 after a major maintenance work, and was equip the look of the present. Halifax Citadel, and there is a difference between the seasonally. Lewisburg built a fortress was built after the Citadel. Take the material after Lewisburg fortress has been taken to have created the Citadel. This time flows now coexist nicely between Canada and the United Kingdom and France.

Mein Schiff 6 - Hamburg trifft New York - Sydney in Kanada / Ausflug nach Louisbourg ????⚓

Breton Brewing Co.
Independently born, crafted by passion.
Ask about the people behind our beer, and you’ll find the answer none too difficult. Ask what it was that started us on our journey, and what you’ll find isn’t the story of a brewery. It’s the story of a place. It’s the story of a people.
Cape Breton has always been as harsh as it is beautiful, as barren as it is rich. Anything wondrous growing here, does so more out of determination than fertile soil.
And so when it came time to name our brewery and the beers we serve, there was only one option. The brewery is named for the land it hails from. The beer, for the legends that have made our Island what it is.
Every sip represents our homage to a longstanding Cape Breton tradition: to make greatness in the most unexpected of places.
