The Living Maya Experience at The Lodge at Big Falls, Belize
Traveling in the Toledo District of southern Belize is a cultural delight thanks to the rich and colorful traditions of the native Garifuna and Mayan people. The Lodge at Big Falls has long supported sustainable local tourism initiatives and now have introduced a new cultural program called the Living Maya Experience. Designed in partnership with two families of employees at the Lodge, visitors are able to experience how traditional Maya live today and what life was like 50 years ago before the modern world encroached. Since the Maya communities in this region speak English, the level of interaction is quite high.

The Indian Creek Mayan Art Women’s Group is a female family owned business located in Indian Creek Village, Toledo, Belize. The group formed by mother, sisters, and nieces was formed back in 2011. The business offers a unique experience of the preserved Maya way of life.
Guests will be able to fall in love with our culture by learning and experiencing several of our customized tour packages. These activities include culinary, chocolate making, basket weaving, music and dance, among others. In addition, guests will be able to
lay eyes on the skilled hands of our Maya women, while teaching them to transform natural resources into gorgeous handmade crafts that have been made for generations.

The Caracol area was occupied as early as 1200 BC, yet occupation in the epicentral area was no earlier than 650 BC and lasted no later than AD 950.
Caracol boasts 53 carved stone monuments (25 stelae and 28 altars), and more than 250 burials and 200 caches.
By the Early Classic (between AD 250 and 550) Caracol was tied into extensive trade networks and pan-lowland ideological systems,[7] leading to a unified regional economy [16] The Caracol was officially founded in AD 331 (8.14.13.10.4) by Te’ K’ab Chaak. Special Deposit C117F-1, a Teotihuacan style cremation of three individuals dates precisely to this period, indicating early influences from northern Mexico .

Lubaantun road out to Southern Hwy, a great road to experience since its one of two that goes to the ruins. The villages you pass through are so pretty and well kept. there is a pride of ownership unlike some of the other places we have visited .. We love the back roads here they are so great to drive
