For more sailing adventures go to To see Dean’s fishing adventures:
After the Moorings and Sunsail finished the repairs on our cruising catamaran, we set sail sail for the US mainland with Dean' s best mate along to experience the cruising lifestyle and lend a hand while sailing.
Our leopard 39 is ready to head back and get a retrofit. The cruising lifestyle aboard a cruising catamaran and cruising Bahamas is under way. Our sailing lifestyle story begins as we make our way from Marsh Harbour Bahamas in the Sea of Abaco to West End Bahamas.
Hooks and Hairspray:
Danielle and Dean sold their home in suburbia with the plans of moving to a sailboat and sailing the Caribbean. As a test to see how their businesses run from a remote location, they moved to a cabin in the woods of northern Wisconsin. They enjoyed living there so much, the test run turned into two years of hiking, fishing, hunting, and outdoor fun.. Now, they're on their way to an adventure at sea. Along with enjoying their ups and downs on the waves, you can follow along as Dean takes on the challenge of catching major fish species and Danielle explores the world of beauty from the perspective of different cultures.
Spinnerbug Fishing:
Get in the boat or wade in the water with Dean as he learns how to catch whatever he can from the waters of Wisconsin, Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean.
Nature Walking - Ecotouring Bahamas
The guests at Small Hope Bay Lodge decided to participate in a little eco tourism on Andros Island by taking advantage of one of our nature walks. Usually the walks are self-guided but Divemaster Loren lead the way for the guests, explaining many of the native plants and sharing some of the folklore associated with bush medicine, which is still practiced throughout the Bahamas. Lee, who is an avid birder, brought along her binoculars and saw a couple of different native birds!

Diving Grand Bahama Caves
This video highlights the caverns and caves we dive on Grand Bahama Island. Please note the dive seen on this video is actually a marine blue hole known as Rocky Creek Boiling Hole. These sinkholes are connected to the Island's cave systems and offer two different types of ecosystems such as caverns and caves. Marine blue holes are wonderful sites and are often very diverse in their marine biosphere. Their access points are from beaches or creek systems known as Mangrove swashland. Inland Blue Holes are sites surrounded by land based ecosystems and their interest focuses more on local folklore, archaeology, palaeontology and geology. Regardless of your choice be prepared for a wonderful Island adventure...

Bahamas - Catastrophic' Dorian parks over the Bahamas / Freeport area where displaced people search
(8 Sep 2019) STORYLINE:
Residents of Freeport ventured out for the first time on September 3rd 2019 since Hurricane Dorian came ashore as a Category 5 storm battering the Bahamas.
Resident Roger Adams drove his vehicle through flood waters to see if he could restock his fuel supply for his generator.
Everybody is flooded out east on the waterway out there, he told the AP before turning around and driving home. A friend of ours his house is 12 feet above the water and I heard he's got water on the first floor.
Practically parking over the Bahamas for a day and a half, Hurricane Dorian pounded away at the islands in a watery onslaught that devastated thousands of homes, trapped people in attics and crippled hospitals.
At least five deaths were reported, with the full extent of the damage far from clear.
The United Nations and the International Red Cross began mobilizing to deal with the unfolding humanitarian crisis in the wake of the most powerful hurricane on record ever to hit the Bahamas.
Dorian's punishing winds and torrential rain battered the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahamas, which have a combined population of about 70,000 and are known for their marinas, golf courses and all-inclusive resorts.
Hurricane Dorian has weakened to a Category 2 storm as it continues to batter the Bahamas with life-threatening storm surge.
The US National Hurricane Center said Dorian's maximum sustained winds decreased to near 110 mph (175 kph), but it's expected to remain a powerful hurricane during the next few days.
Dorian is centred about 45 miles (70 kilometres) north of Freeport in the Bahamas and is moving northwest near 2 mph (4 kph).

Rescuers trying to reach drenched and stunned victims of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas fanned out across a blasted landscape of smashed and flooded homes September 4th, while disaster relief organisations rushed to bring in food and medicine.
Severe damage to property and roads was recorded in Casuarina Bridge, Freeport, where locals have been taking rescued residents from flooded homes.
The official death toll stood at seven but was certain to rise.
The full magnitude of the crisis in the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama was still coming into focus, with rescue crews yet to reach some stricken areas.
The storm mauled the Bahamas for over a day and a half with winds up to 185 mph (295 kph) and torrential rains, swamping neighbourhoods in muddy brown floodwaters and destroying or severely damaging thousands of homes.
National Security Minister Marvin Dames said rescue teams were fanning out across the northern Bahamas as the winds and rain subsided, with more than 600 police officers and marines in Grand Bahama and an additional 100 in Abaco.
Rescuers used jet skis, boats and even a bulldozer to reach children and adults trapped by the swirling waters, while the US Coast Guard, Britain's Royal Navy and relief organisations tried to get food and medicine to survivors and take the most desperate people to safety.

Aerial footage over the Bahamas on September 4th showed the full devastation left behind by Hurricane Dorian, a day after the most powerful hurricane on record ever to hit the country mauled the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama.
Video showed extensive damage to homes, trees and boats along the coastlines.
At least seven deaths have been reported in the Bahamas from Dorian, with the full scope of the disaster still unknown.

Great Bahamas Trees! | Rick Joyce | BNHC 2016
Great Bahamas Trees!
Presented by Rick Joyce
Trees in the Bahamas are extremely important. The trees greatly benefit from good human care. Valuable trees of the Bahamas include the native forest species, coastal mangroves, tropical fruit trees and introduced landscape trees. The proper pruning and overall care of trees will increase their health and extend their life. Sharing best tree pruning and care practices adds value to trees for the long-term. The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is an international organization that advocates sound tree pruning and care around the world. The ISA has a widely recognized “Certified Arborist” program. This arborist certification provides valuable education to anyone that propagates, grows, installs or maintain trees. My tree growing, pruning and care research has been ongoing for over 30 years. As a long-time International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) board member, Certified Arborist and having the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ), I have given hundreds of presentations on the pruning and care of trees. Beyond work as a professional forester, my wife and I operate a wholesale tree and plant growing nursery in Southwest Florida growing thousands of trees, including mangroves and other coastal trees that are native to the Bahamas. In 2015, we contract grew just grew 30,000 mangroves. Improved care of all trees provides extended tree life, strength, beauty and value. Sharing an understanding of basic structural tree pruning to advanced arboriculture will help insure a healthy urban and natural forest in the Bahamas for the long-term. As the Bahamas continues to grow and urbanize, the value and significance of urban forestry science will be introduced. Mangrove trees in the Bahamas command additional care. Mangrove trees and forests are a critically important plant species for the entire Bahamas marine system. A reasonable balance between desire of residents and property owners (e.g.; views, access, navigation) and the health of the marine systems can be achieved by creative design and careful pruning. The goal of this presentation is to share the latest research on tree growing, care and especially on pruning. It is hoped that this presentation will result in an increased interest in Bahamas trees and in the long-term importance of good tree care.

Elbow Reef Lighthouse, Hope Town Bahamas
Hope Town in the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas has many treasures, one of the most visible is the red and white striped Elbow Reef Lighthouse. A climb up the lighthouse's 101 steps to a stunning view of the outlying Parrot Cays and Elbow Cay's enclosed harbor is well worth the effort.
I was able to climb those 101 steps of the Elbow Reef Lighthouse and I strapped a funny looking camera to my head when I did. Watch the video below and you'll know what it's like to spiral your way up to the top and get rewarded by the amazing view at the top. You'll get the view without the sweat and effort it takes to get up to the top! I like to think I'm in descent shape, but my heart was pounding like a drum when I reached the top.
