Ukraine: Lychakiv Cemetery, Lviv
Lychakiv Cemetery (Polish: Cmentarz Łyczakowski; Ukrainian: Личаківський цвинтар, translit. Lychakivs'kyi tsvyntar) is a famous and historic cemetery in Lviv, Ukraine.
Since its creation in 1787 as Łyczakowski Cemetery, it has been the main necropolis of the city's inteligentsia, middle and upper classes. Initially the cemetery was located on several hills in the borough of Lychakiv, following the imperial Austro-Hungarian edict ordering that all cemeteries be moved outside of the city limits. The original project was prepared by Karol Bauer, the head of the Lviv University botanical garden.
In mid-1850s the cemetery was expanded significantly by Tytus Tchórzewski, who created the present network of alleys and round-abouts. It then became the main city cemetery, and soon most other cemeteries were closed. The two largest that remained were the Yanivskiy Cemetery (in Polish Janowski, with many working class graves) and the adjacent New Jewish Cemetery. Lychakivskiy Cemetery was used by all Christian sects in the city: in addition to Roman Catholics, it also included Eastern Rite Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox.
Cemetery of the Defenders of Lwów ... In 1925 the ashes of one of the unknown defenders of Lviv were transferred to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw. Since 1999 there is also a monument to the Sich Riflemen located just outside the mausoleum of Polish defenders of the city in 1918.
After World War II the city was annexed by the Soviet Union to the Ukrainian SSR and the majority of the surviving pre-war inhabitants of the city were expelled to the former German areas awarded to Poland after the Yalta Conference. This started a period of devastation of historical monuments located at the cemetery. Up to 1971 many of the sculptures were destroyed; the cemetery of Lwów Eagles was completely destroyed and turned into a truck depot. However, in 1975 the cemetery was declared a historical monument and the degradation ended. Since the late 1980s, the cemetery has seen constant rebuilding and refurbishment and continues to be one of the principal tourist attractions of Lwów. Due to the history of complex Polish-Ukrainian relations, the Polish Eagles Cemetery was neglected because the Ukrainian authorities did not want to rebuild this monument of little Polish soldiers defending the city in 1920s. Though in the late 1980s, workers of a Polish company which were working in Khmelnytskyi started to redecorate and rebuild the necropolis from its ruins (which was not always legal according to Ukrainian law). Although the Ukrainian authorities tried to stop the works several times, the Poles managed to renovate this important memorial of great Lvovians.
In late 2006 the city administration announced plans to transfer the tombs of Stepan Bandera, Yevhen Konovalets, Andriy Melnyk and other key leaders of OUN/UPA to a new area of the cemetery dedicated to the Ukrainian national liberation struggle.

Lychakiv Cemetery Lviv, Ukraine
A short walk through this well maintained cemetery with many monuments to resistance fighters of both world wars. Best known for Ivan Franko's burial site...
Lychakiv Cemetery, Lviv, Ukraine.
With its abundance of masterpiece monuments, this expansive necropolis basically doubles as an open-air fine art museum. Lifelike statues chiseled with painstaking detail stand by some of the plots like stone guards. Sculptures of angels draped in delicate, flowing robes adorn some graves, while well-muscled men top others.
Opened in 1786, the sprawling cemetery is older than famous graveyards like the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris and and London’s Highgate Cemetery. It was originally reserved as the final resting place for Lviv’s upper class residents.
The bones of many of the city’s wealthy politicians, scientists, and artists lie within the soil. There, you’ll find the plots of famous Ukrainian figures like poet, journalist, and activist Ivan Franko; composer Stanislaw Liudkevych; and opera singer Solomiya Krushelnytska. Because the graveyard catered to a wealthy crowd, the older parts of it resemble a grand sculpture garden or open-air museum.

Some of you will get creeped out. Still, I admit I like to visit cemeteries and Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv, Ukraine is one worth a visit.
This is the burial place created more than 230 years ago for the upper class of the city. Today it is officially called the State History and Culture Museum-Preserve “Lychakiv Cemetery”. As it became the main cemetery of the town, it was used by all Christian sects in the city. In addition to Roman Catholics, it also included Eastern Rite Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox.
As you walk on it’s intertwining alleys, you will discover beautiful gravestones and impressive war memorials.
Of course, famous people of the era are buried here, of which many were Polish since Lviv used to be under the Polish influence.

LYCHAKIV CEMETERY | Lviv, Ukraine | Roam Your Roots
On our Holocaust and genealogy tour of Poland and Ukraine, we made Lviv one of our home bases. Lviv was once an epicenter of intercultural intelligencia: of artists and scholars, writers and teachers. Previously known as Lwów, the city was once located in Poland, but after WWII it was absorbed by the Soviet Union. Then, in 1991, Ukraine gained its independence. Lychakiv Cemetery perfectly showcases this fascinating geopolitical history, with tombstones in Polish and Ukrainian, some ornate and some made in a classic Soviet style.
It wasn't until after visiting this cemetery that I realized we missed some of its more spectacular sights; particularly, the Field of Mars and the Lviv Defenders' Cemetery.
Nevertheless, a visit to Lychakiv Cemetery is MUCH recommended to anyone visiting Lviv!

Stryiskyi Park and Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv
Stryiskyi Park and Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv
In this video, I am exploring 2 of the must-visit places in Lviv, Ukraine. It's Stryiskyi Park and Lychakiv Cemetery. Visiting these places in November was lot's of fun cause me and my wife are living in Dubai, so it was quite a change of scenery and temperatures for us. The park was beautiful with a pond full of ducks and swans. The cemetery is definitely not for everyone, but as I already said in my vlog it is in Top 10 places to see in Lviv so I had to try it. At the end of the video, I am getting a haircut and a beard trim at the local barbershop.
