Macau - Macau to be handed over to China in 1999
T/I: 10:15:30
Down the coast from Hong Kong the residents of the Portuguese
colony of Macau will be anxiously watching the handover of the
enclave to China at the end of this month - knowing that their
turn comes in 1999.
The Portuguese having twice offered to hand over Macau since the
1960's. Beijing, struggling with poverty and unrest, rejected
the offer both times.
Eventually a joint Sino-Portuguese Declaration was signed in
April 1987, setting 1999 as the handover date.

MENGHARUKAN -Sejarah berdirinya MACAU

After settling in and starting work since her return from graduation abroad, Miri, a young, smart and attractive Macau Chinese girl, decides to go for a walk on the old part of town. There, she hears a particular music that catches her attention, and she decides to follow it...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This film, done with practically no budget and completely self financed, involved many volunteers. The credits list goes long, due to a constant flow of people that could come and help during the year long weekends when this film was made . 100% made by Macau Residents, from the production team, music composing, post production and acting.
Done in 2008, this film was part of the original Macau Stories, and has been in selected film showings around China and in Portugal. I thought now would be a good time to share it here on the internet. The story, I think, still makes sense to be shared today.
Special thanks and dedication to the late Zeca Manhão, the owner of the restaurant Paparoca (where a big part of this film was shot, and who made the wonderful dishes you see in this film) who passed away shortly before the showing of this film. I'm really proud and humbled by all who participated and made this film possible. I am eternally grateful for you all to have given me your time and energy to make this film possible. I think the story still makes sense for today. Like or dislike, this is a piece of work that i share with you and i hope it creates a lasting impression. Sorry about the watermark, but I haven't released this yet and still haven't figured out how to do a proper boxed version of this.
This is the version I had originally envisioned, with the original credits done by the very talented Motion Graphics Designer Miguel Khan and original songs by João Caetano and Evonne Lei Vai Fan, the two main composers of this short film. Special thanks to Tuna Macaense, Russo, Lalo and Isa Manhão, who did the acoustic versions of some classic Patuá songs. Gigi Chiu Fong Chi, the main actress of this film, also sings two of the songs of this film. Hope you all enjoy, have a good time and see it to the end!

===

Harry tries the best goose barbecue in Hong Kong at Yung Kee Restaurant with a 50-year pedigree of awards for this dish they have perfected. The BBQ sauce is sort of gravy-live with a slightly sweet ducky flavor which paired perfectly with the goose. Not a lot of meat for almost USD $100 per serving.

Hi! I'm Harry Soo, a Grand Champion pitmaster from in Diamond Bar, near Los Angeles. Welcome to my vlogs, BBQ product reviews, travel & lifestyle videos, BBQ contests, classes, as well as interviews and stories.
On weekdays, I'm an IT nerd living a Dilbertesque existence in a fabric covered cubicle in downtown LA. I'm the head tour guide for a team of IT project managers who build datacenters, networks, servers, and infrastructure that helps bring tap water to 300 cities and 20 million residents in SoCal.
On weekends, I come alive as a pitmaster, competitor, and BBQ instructor. You've seen me on BBQ Pitmasters, Food Network, Chopped Grill Masters, Smoked, Cutthroat Kitchen, and local TV in California. My shtick is I've used a humble 18-inch Weber Smokey Mountain smoker to win 100+ first places and 1st place USA in the Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) awards including best chicken, brisket, and sirloin; and I've won over 27 Grand Championships. I've personally taught 200+ classes and trained 3,000+ pitmasters in small hands-on dozen student classes in the US, Sydney, London, Kuala Lumpur, Canada, and Hawaii.
I get many questions weekly about how to grill and barbecue. Since I started cooking professionally in 2008, I've answered thousands via email so I decided to post my answers via video to reach a wider audience. I'll do my best to post a video on my channel periodically. I upload vlogs, BBQ product reviews, travel & lifestyle videos, BBQ contests, classes; as well as interviews and stories.

MACAU: PREPARATIONS FOR COLONIES RETURN TO CHINESE RULE IN 1999
English/Nat
As the Portuguese colony of Macau prepares to return to Chinese rule in 1999 the government has decided it will turn Macau's most famous hotel into the private home for the first Portuguese consul-general.
The decision has generated outrage in the local community.
The Portuguese colony of Macau - a place known for its casinos.
Located just one hour away from Hong Kong by boat, it has long served as a getaway paradise for the people of Hong Kong and travellers from around the world.
After more than four-hundred years under Portuguese rule, its sovereignty will be returned to China in December 1999.
The transition process has already sparked some concern from the local population.
The people of Macau learned weeks ago that the Portuguese Government had purchased the five-star Hotel Bela Vista for use in relation to the turnover.
The hotel is to serve as the private residence of the first Portuguese consul-general to Macau after the handover to China on December 20, 1999.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Every room has a little story to say, all the food has the origin of Portugal, of Macau, so it's basically carrying on the tradition of Macau and keeping it alive.
SUPER CAPTION: Paul-Andre Guidat, Manager of Hotel Bela Vista
Although little could be done to prevent the hotel's transformation, locals say they will still remember what they called their Palace.
Built in 1870, the Bela Vista has gone through a series of changes.
Over the years, it has served as a school, asylum, military retreat and refugee centre.
A 6.5 (m) million U-S dollar agreement was signed in 1990 with a international hotel management group to renovate the run down building into today's five-star Hotel Bela Vista, making it a landmark for Macau.
With only eight suites, the five-star hotel offers many of the comforts one finds at home - with a mixture of Portuguese and Chinese furniture and decor.
The hotel has also received many accolades, such as when the Tatler/Cunard Travel Guide 1998 listed it as one of five great escapes for the city slickers in the world.
Guests at the luxurious hotel say they are sad to hear the hotel and its place in Macau's society will not be around for much longer.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I think it's a great shame to lose a restaurant like this, not just because of the food, we haven't eaten here yet, but because of its ambience, because of the history that it has and it will be a pity to see a part of Portugal go.
SUPER CAPTION: Olaf Lambert, hotel restaurant diner
The hotel will be officially closed on March 31 of next year.
Until then, interested parties still have a year to come and stay in this cosy hotel, with room rates ranging from three-hundred to seven-hundred U-S dollars a night.
As Macau prepares for its return to the Chinese rule, many government positions are now being offered to local Chinese where they were only available to Portuguese years ago.
There are less than 10-thousand Portuguese left in Macau and many of them will be retreated back to Portugal once the turnover takes place.

2018 OPEN HOUSE MACAU
Our story of the Logo
10–11 NOVEMBER 2018 | Macau
Architecture Beyond Walls
Intense and complex, Macau is the most densely populated territory in the world, a vibrant and ever-changing city with a unique history of cultural exchange. Glossy casino developments of recent years juxtapose with a compact and layered fabric, where scattered idiosyncratic buildings tell a history of almost 500 years of cohabitation between East and West.
Open House Macau is committed to uncover the untold architectural history of Macau from its cluttered urban landscape, by opening the doors of great architecture examples to its citizens, welcoming them to talk about, think about and celebrate their city, while experiencing first-hand how good quality design may positively influence their daily lives.
Taking place next November, Open House Macau (OHM) 2018 edition will be the first Open House initiative to take place in Asia, a pioneer event that’ll offer its audiences the chance to get behind-the-scenes from sites that are usually not accessible, encompassing an eclectic selection of 50 buildings of Chinese vernacular architecture, Neoclassic, Art Déco, Modernist, and Contemporary buildings.
OHM is organized by CURB – Center for Architecture and Urbanism (@curbcentermacau), a non-profit organization established in Macau to promote research, education, production and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of Architecture, Urbanism, Design and Urban Culture.

Future Macau - City of Dreams Hotel Tower by Zaha Hadid
Zaha Hadid Architects has designed a 40-story luxury hotel for Macau’s premier leisure and entertainment destination known as “City of Dreams.” Perceived as a single “sculptural element” united by an exposed exoskeleton mesh structure, the “simple volume” was extruded from its rectangular site as two towers connected at the podium and roof levels, with two organically-shaped bridges punctuating the tower’s center external void. This central void is then celebrated by a 40-meter tall, “grandiose atrium” that greets visitors as they enter the hotel.
The tower’s exposed exoskeleton reinforces the dynamism of the design. Expressive and powerful, this external structure optimizes the interior layouts and envelops the building, further defining its formal composition and establishing relationships with the new Cotai strip, described ZHA in a press release.
Once complete in early 2017, the hotel will house a retail strip, gaming area and the atrium, which includes the main reception area, lobby bar, and a flexible installation space, on the ground floor, in addition to 780 hotel units, a casino floor, specialty restaurants, a “super lounge,” VIP gaming, top floor villas and a sky pool.

A Story In Macau
A story in macau
from Isabella
Macau World Heritage Lou Kau Mansion
The mansion is believed to be built in 1889.This was the home of Lou Kau, a prominent Chinese merchant who owned several imposing properties in the city. The location of this grand old house depicts the diverse social profile present in the centre of the old Christian City, where this traditional Chinese residence stands near Senado Square and Cathedral Square. Lou Kau Mansion is a two-storey, traditional grey-brick courtyard house, with the architectural characteristics of a typical Xiguan Chinese residential building.
