Steelhead Fishing Mad River Pump Station #4 2/5/12
Flyfishing for hatchery steelhead on the Mad River near Pump Station #4, south of Bluelake, CA.
This is not how you catch fish here. The fishermen in the background are catching fish by running a line through it's jaws and snapping back on the rod to snag fish. Besides being hatchery fish, they are in a state of metamorphosis to freshwater that they are not as tasty as what we typically think of as salmon.

Wild Mad Steel - January 2014
Trying for a hatchery steelhead on the Mad River, I was blessed with a beautiful wild adult. It's pretty challenging to hook, fight and land a steelhead from a kayak - especially on a small stream. I like challenging.

Van Life - Nature and Beer Fix in Humboldt
Days 37 - ? on the Road - We kind of lost track this session, as we were visiting a lot of family this week and really didn't film much of it. Here's a good portion of two of our days while Gaston and Lindsey were in town as well (@sprint2explore), which included a lot of rain, hiking through the Redwood Park/Arcata Community Forest in the rain with the kiddos, food and great beer at Mad River Brewery and Six Rivers Brewery....fishing on the Mad River and visiting the fish hatchery, aaannd.....Luffenholtz Beach at sunset.
Once you get a break in the weather, you get outside! Or just go anyways :)
AND we still stayed in our van our whole visit. We were just lucky to have families' facilities a few steps away ;) Plus, the van in this wet environment (Arcata's basically a rain forest) gets super damp so we ran a dehumidifier after a couple days and it was CRAZY how much water it pulled. It saved our butts. The maps on the ceiling were drooping and our bedding was just flat, damp and heavy...not very comfortable when trying to sleep.
How did we do it? Check out our DIY Sprinter Van Build Video here:
