Magnetic Island |
We began our trip by cruising over to Magnetic Island on the Fantasea ferry, the trip only takes about 30 minutes. We then caught the bus to YHA Bungalow Bay Koala Village which is where we camped over the length of our 4 night stay.
We enjoyed many adventures like horse riding, off-road driving, hikes, snorkelling and rock wallaby feeding. We rented a topless car and a 4WD on seperate days and explored the many spots on the island.

Magnetic Island, Australia
Auckland to Brisbane to Townsville to Magnetic Island (Car, Plane, Train, plane, taxi, boat, bus ... whew!) ... but WELL worth the trip. Stayed in a beautiful Holiday home that friends of ours own called Daggoombah. The Island is the resort island that time forgot. Most of it is national park so there is no built up areas apart from the ferry landing. its Waiheke 20 years ago. GREAT times!

Day 12 - 13th September 2017
On day 12 we jumped on the boat to Magnetic Island. It was a pretty hectic day, exploring much of the island as we could. We checked out Horseshoe Bay, Radical Bay and the Forts Walk. We also found out that Koalas make some really strange noises...

Exploring Magnetic Island in Australia
I'm really glad I decided to spend a couple nights on Magnetic Island in beautiful Queensland, Australia. I headed to the island with no plan other than to simply explore the island, meet some new people, and learn about the history of this part of Australia. One thing I didn't mention in the video that I find interesting is that the second floor of one of these Command Post forts is bricked off and houses generators and radio equipment - it is still an operational radio-repeater and navigational beacon. Also, it is always a treat to see some wild Koalas! I regret not filming the group I traveled with more, but we only spent the day together and it can be a little weird filming people after you first meet them, but nonetheless, I really did enjoy spending the day with people and being a social animal. It also occurred to me upon completion of this video that the phrase “Loud-ass Lorikeets” would make a great band name...do you agree?
This video is part of a series of videos depicting my travels in Australia as I lived there for an entire year on a “work and holiday visa.” Please consider subscribing for more videos from the beautiful land down under as well as other backpacking and adventure travel videos!

The island has long become established as a holiday destination with many hotels and several resorts in operation to cater for all levels of service. The public facilities and infrastructure on the island are managed by the Townsville City Council. The island is part of the electoral district of Townsville in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The island is also part of the Federal seat of Herbert, which is represented by Ewen Jones.
Naming
The name of the island came about because of the apparent /magnetic/ effect it had on the ship's compass of Captain Cook as he passed the island when sailing up the east coast of Australia in 1770. People have since explored the general area of Magnetic Island with various instruments to discover what might have caused the effect that Cook reported, but nothing has been discovered. The island's mysterious magnetic effect is the basis for the 2015 speculative fiction novel 'A Tango with the Dragon.' The local name for the island is Maggie Isle / Maggie Island, or / The Island.
Natural heritage
The island is a haven for wildlife. 54% of the island is Magnetic Island National Park, which is mostly located on the steep hilly interior and rugged north-western side. The highest point on the island is Mount Cook reaching 497 m / 1,631 ft above sea level.
Magnetic Island is famous for its angling opportunities. Fish around the island include: blue marlin, black marlin, sailfish, mackerel, wahoo, giant trevally, dogtooth tuna, coral trout, mahi-mahi, tuna, red emperor and sea perch.
As of 2013, there are over 800 koalas estimated to be present on the island; this population represents the northern limit of their geographic range.
The pressure of coastal development has, in recent years, begun to make a significant impact on the island, which lies in the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. At present many millions of dollars in development are planned for the island and the impact of these has led to considerable opposition from some residents who fear the effects this development will have on the environmental values of Magnetic's lowlands which are not protected by the national park; these areas represent only 20% of the whole island, and of this 20%, most is freehold land and is already developed.
Koalas and Wombats on Magnetic Island
This week we crossed the island while hiking, bus-hopping, gem-collecting, and Koala hugging. We visited with the adorable marsupials of Magnetic Island and celebrated Mom and Dad's 20th anniversary!

One of a pair of nesting curlews at the bottom of our property. This display, called 'mantling' is meant to warn off and distract potential threats. The chick was on the right, notice how it moves to the left to lead me away.

2013 Magnetic Island holiday travel guide Into Water Travel Series part 2
A visit to Townsville isn't complete without spending some time over on Magnetic Island.
This tropical island offers a world of fun and adventure to experience, with over 20km of walking tracks and 23 bays and beaches to explore.
The short quick trip over to Maggi (as it is affectionately called by the locals) is quite picturesque so is a good time to get your camera out. When we arrived we decided to hire a car from C:Drive Car Rentals as it is quite a large island and a car would make sure that we got around nice and easily. There are also buses if you don't want to hire a car.
We had a pretty action packed day which was awesome, but I would suggest staying on the island a few days to really make the most of it. There is a lot of accommodation there from backpackers to 5* resorts.
We made sure that we had a full day of fun and adventure and went out jet skiing and on tube rides with Jet Ski Hire Magnetic island ( jetskihiremi.com.au ); paid a visit to the local wildlife park at Bungalow Bay Koala Village ( bungalowbay.com.au ) where we hugged a koala and crocodile; had an amazing seafood lunch at the marlin Bar; went snorkeling along their fringing reefs in their bays and beaches; saw a koala in a tree in the wild on their Forts Walk; and topped our day off with a sunset stretch limo ride with Magnetic Limousines ( magneticlimousines.com.au ) to delicious dinner and cocktails at Noodies on the Beach ( noodiesonthebeach.com ).
5 things to do on Magnetic Island
This perfect weekend escape is just 20 minutes from Townsville. Introducing, Magnetic Island. This little slice of paradise is the Great Barrier Reef's only island with its own postcode – fun fact!
Two-thirds of Magnetic Island is National Park and is surrounded by easily accessible bays and sandy beaches just waiting to be explored as well as encapsulated by granite boulders adding to its unique charm.
The best way to experience Maggie, as it is affectionately known to the locals, is to get off the bitumen and explore the natural surroundings of this island paradise.
Get back to nature on the Forts Walk, keeping your eyes peeled for koalas, feed the rock wallabies or get your adrenaline pumping with watersports at Horseshoe Bay.
