The Malmsbury Viaduct is a large brick and stone masonry arch bridge over the Coliban River at Malmsbury on the Bendigo Railway in Victoria Australia. It was erected as part of the Melbourne, Mount Alexander and Murray River Railway between 1858 and 1861, and was at the time the largest masonry arch railway bridge built in Victoria.
The bridge is over 100m long with five 18.3 metre spans, standing about 25 metres high.132,000 cubic feet of bluestone for the bridge was quarried at the east end of Malmsbury and carted to the site by horse and drays.
Malmsbury, Australia - Another Visit
... and here was another visit 18 months on. The characters are still there (love them),as is the pub, but so is this lovely little place just off the Calder Highway. Funny how you can't see the beauty when it's right under your nose - I'd swap it any day for busy, dirty old Birmingham!
Pop along for a pie at The Bakery, or a coffee n' chips at Paddy's General Store - better still, join in the locals for a pot at the pub! Laughter with them guaranteed. What a great little place...
Malmsbury Victoria Australia
I made this short video on a day visit. This small tourist township is a service centre and a place of historic significance dating back to the gold rush era. I hope that is enjoyed by all.

The viaduct, originally called the Shawford Viaduct, was built in the late 1880s by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR). It provided a link over the River Itchen and water meadows, from the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway (DN&SR), to the LSWR's main line. The DN&SR was originally intended to continue down the east side of the Itchen to Southampton, but had stalled at Winchester due to lack of funds. The viaduct crossed the valley to link the DN&SR to the LSWR, which ran (and still runs) down the west side of the valley.[1]
The viaduct was last used by the railway on 2 April 1966. It fell as a result of the Beeching Axe,[although all of it, with the exception of a few bricks on the walls, is still standing as of February 2014 and open to walkers and cyclists and also forms part of the National Cycle Network.
The structure has 33 spans. Although it appears to be a brick structure, the viaduct in fact has a solid concrete core in its pillars, with the bricks simply performing an aesthetic function. The bricks came from the Poole Brickworks in Wellington, Somerset, and the blue engineering capping bricks from Blanchards at Bishop's Waltham. It was long suspected that the viaduct's structure contained concrete, but not until recent borings into the structure were made was it realised that the majority of the bridge was made of the material. This makes it amongst the earliest modern structures to have a solid concrete core.
