Manchester Cathedral, formally the Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George, in Manchester, England, is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Manchester, seat of the Bishop of Manchester and the city's parish church.
The main body of the cathedral is in the Perpendicular Gothic style. James Stanley (warden 1485–1506) was responsible for commissioning the late-medieval wooden furnishings, including the pulpitum, choir stalls and the nave roof supported by angels with gilded instruments. The medieval church was extensively refaced, restored and extended in the Victorian period, and again following bomb damage in the 20th century. The cathedral is one of fifteen Grade I listed buildings in Manchester.
Under the Cathedrals Act 1840, the warden and fellows of the collegiate church were translated into a dean and canons in preparation for becoming the cathedral of the new Manchester Diocese which came into effect in 1847. The building was extensively renovated in 1882.
Manchester Cathedral houses extensive parish and historical archives, dating back to 1421. In 2003, a project began to provide an exhaustive catalogue of the archive's contents to the public. The cathedral was granted Grade I listed building status in January 1952. Grade I structures are considered to be buildings of exceptional interest.

The Angel Stone, a small carving of an angel with a scroll was discovered in the wall of the cathedral's south porch providing evidence of an early Saxon church has been dated to around 700 AD is preserved in the cathedral. Its Old English inscription translates as into thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. The Mysteries of Manchester Cathedral
Visitor Services Manager, Dympna Gould, reveals some of the secrets of Manchester Cathedral in this extended extract from the spring edition of The Guide.
The institution, which dates its origins to the 11th Century, has evidence of an earlier incarnation of a church on the site and has a series of unusual and beguiling features which add to the mysteries and myths of this historic building.
All is revealed on the regular tours of the cathedral but here Dympna teases viewers with some of those special features.
This extract is part of a series of pilot programmes in which the Cathedral, The Dean, Canons and staff reveal more about their mission to preach the gospels; to witness the work of God and Jesus Christ in the city while demonstrating the openness the cathedral has to people of all faiths and non.
The Guide is produced and directed by Stephen Chapman and Tighe Grainger is Director of Photography.

Rob hears beautiful music from Chets (Chetham's School of Music) performing a wonderful violin solo by Carl Heinrich Biber (1681-1749) and an extract from Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943).
JS Bach is performed by The Cathedral Choristers conducted by Christopher Stokes as The Dean and colleagues discuss the Cathedral’s Christian Mission; their devotion to the Gospels; the work of God and Jesus Christ and how they wish the iconic building to be open to people of all faiths and none.
There’s music from British band Django Django currently on tour and an exclusive preview of new art and a dramatic piece by a Manchester based portrait artist.
Anthony O’Connor also discusses the fundraising activities which keep the building free to enter.

Prince William visits Manchester Cathedral
(2 Jun 2017) Britain's Prince William visited Manchester Cathedral on Friday, where he praised the grit of the city and those who responded to last week's attack which killed 22 people.
Manchester's strength and togetherness is an example to the world, he wrote in a book of condolence.
My thoughts are with all those affected.

Manchester Cathedral - 6th September, 2011
Manchester Cathedral is a medieval church on Victoria Street in central Manchester and is the seat of the Bishop of Manchester. The cathedral's official name is The Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George in Manchester. It has also variously been known locally as St Mary's, Christ Church and, simply, t'owd church.
Although extensively refaced, restored and extended in the Victorian period, and then again following severe bomb damage in the 20th century, the main body of the Cathedral largely derives from the wardenship of James Stanley (warden 1485--1506), and is in the Perpendicular Gothic style. Stanley was also primarily responsible for commissioning the spectacular late medieval wooden furnishings, including the pulpitum, the choir stalls, and the nave roof supported by angels with gilded instruments. It is one of the Grade I listed buildings in Manchester. Since 2005 the Dean of the Cathedral has been the Very Reverend Rogers Morgan Govender.
This video features views of both the Cathedral exterior and interior, including the architecture, sculptures, statues and stained glass windows.
