Castlefield Manchester

Piccadilly Manchester
Piccadilly describes an area surrounding Manchester Piccadilly railway station. It is a perfect location for people working in the city centre and for those who want a speedy commute to cities all across the country.

Windows shattered and shards of debris flew through the air as the blast tore through office buildings and shops within a half-mile radius in Manchester city centre on June 15, 1996 (left). Minutes earlier two police officers are seen directing people away from the vehicle (inset), which was packed with 1.5kg of explosives, and a bomb squad called in. A robot approaches the lorry but efforts to diffuse the bomb prove in vain as time runs out (middle). Nobody was killed but 212 people were injured and £700million in damage caused (right) after the explosive device was detonated close to Marks & Spencer and the Arndale shopping centre.

The Million Poppy Cascade at intu Trafford Centre, Manchester, UK
A CASCADE of a million poppy petals stunned staff and customers at intu Trafford Centre as they marked 100 years since the start of World War 1.
The iconic Main Dome at the heart of the shopping centre was filled with a red rain of poppy petals, each one representing one of the million plus people lost in the war to the British Empire.
The Mayor of Trafford Councillor Mr Ejaz Malik, cadets, old soldiers, staff and customers heard the haunting strains of Vivaldi’s “Spring” fill the Dome, before a trumpeter sounded The Last Post. This signalled the start of a 3 minute display as hidden cannons at the top of the Dome pumped a million paper petals onto the crowds below.
Britain will begin a four-year commemoration of the Great War, officially beginning on August 4th, the day that Britain entered the war in 1914.
Richard Paxton, general manager of intu Trafford Centre, explained: “The time came to decide what we could do to mark such an important anniversary.
“We’ve worked with local schools to plant thousands of poppies all around the centre, and we’ve teamed up with the Royal British Legion to help support their fund-raising drive at this most important time.
“Remember”
“But we also wanted to create something really special that we could all share, which would be our contribution, our way of remembering the fallen men and women of the war, and our way of holding a poignant and thought-provoking event for our staff and customers to look back on in future years.
“The thought behind the poppy cascade is to take the iconic flower that blossomed in the churned up battlefields of Europe, and look at it anew, try to see the poppy symbol in another way. So our team decided to create a mind-blowing poppy cascade of a million petals – one petal for every soldier lost to the British Empire in the Great War.
“So as we stand in this red rain of poppy petals, let’s remember each of more than a million men who lost their lives to protect our freedoms. Each of those men had a family, mothers and fathers, perhaps a partner or children.
“True scale of the war”
“And so the true scale of The Great War becomes clearer from our display, so too does the impact it must have had across our country, and across the generations.”
The Revd Charles Butler MBE, Deputy Assistant Chaplain General at Preston barracks, lead the congregation in a prayer, and read poetry from war poet Wilfred Owen.
Meanwhile, Vaughn Kent-Payne, area manager for the Lancashire and Greater Manchester branch, said: “Our work nowadays is as vital as it ever was, supporting servicemen and their families from previous wars right up to Afghanistan, in a variety of different ways that help to preserve their dignity. Remembrance events like this are so important to that cause, and I’d like to thank intu Trafford Centre for such a memorable display.”
Ex-serviceman Alan Brackenridge, 77, and now a member of staff at the centre, recited Siegfried Sassoon’s Does It Matter?
He said afterwards: “My heart was thumping as I’m not used to public speaking, but the whole spectacle was jaw-dropping, and I’m pleased so many members of staff took part.”
Shopper Julie Host from Carlisle watched the poppy cascade, and said afterwards: “I had no idea what to expect, but the music started and suddenly this massive space was absolutely filled with fluttering poppy petals – it was breath-taking, and I saw more than a few tears from the staff and other customers as we watched.”
