ABOUT SUNDARBANS NATIONAL PARK:
Sundarbans National Park is a national park in South 24 Parganas district of the state of West Bengal, India. The largest mangrove forests of the saltwater environment along the Great Sundarbans are intact forests that are the largest in the world. The seafront border of the basin is located at the mouth of the Ganges and the Brahmaputra and extends across West Bengal in Bangladesh and India. There are about 10000 sq km of Sundarbans, spread over an area of 6017 square kilometers in Bangladesh.
The work of conservation of the present Indian part of the Sundarbans began in the 1878. The main area was declared as the Sundarbans Tiger Project in the 1973. It was declared as a national park on May 7th 1984. In the 1987 (ix) and (x) category, it is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a natural property. There are currently three more wildlife sanctuaries set up in Sajanekhali, Lothian Island and Holiday Island. Besides, there are birds at Bharatpur Crocodile Project and Sajnekhali near Patharpatima. In the 1989, this Indian part of the Sundarbans was declared a Biosphere Reserve. Although Bangladesh and Indian parts of the Greater Sundarbans are part of the same continuous land, UNESCO's World Heritage Index is named after the Sundarbans and Sundarbans National Parks, respectively. Marine streams surround the entire Sundarbans as nets, Mud Char and mangrove forests are small islands with salt water. In addition to the famous Royal Bengal Tiger in the forest, the forest is known as home to numerous species of birds, including Chitra deer, saltwater crocodile, Keto turtles, freshwater crocodiles and snakes. The largest mangroves in the world, the Sunderban Biosphere has been conserved and protected by a very hard working and diligent work force. This documentary for the West Bengal forest department is a tribute to the brave guards work in one of the most dangerous and difficult terrains in the world.
The Sundarbans is a mangrove area in the delta formed by the confluence of Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengal. It spans from the Hooghly River in India's state of West Bengal to the Baleswar River in Bangladesh.
The Sundarbans mangrove forest, one of the largest such forests in the world (140,000 ha), lies on the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers on the Bay of Bengal. It is adjacent to the border of India and Bangladesh, Sundarbans World Heritage site inscribed in 1987. The site is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests, and presents an excellent example of ongoing ecological processes. The area is known for its wide range of fauna, including 260 bird species, the Bengal tiger and other threatened species such as the estuarine crocodile and the Indian python.
Naming the Sundarbans: Sundarbans literally means beautiful jungle or beautiful forest. Sundarbans is named after the beautiful trees, which are grown here. Other possible explanations might be that it was named after the sea, forest or moon-bound (ancient aborigines). It is generally assumed that Sundarbans are named after the beautiful tree tree.

Tour of the Backpackers' Eco-Village in Satjelia, Sundarbans
Backpackers' eco-village provides clean toilet and comfortable bed, with a centre for meeting and knowing fellow travellers, some pet animals, with an open kitchen for the guests to see their meal being cooked by the local sundarban women.
They have 20 mud cottages, a community centre, a farmhouse, few ponds and vast land for paddy field and vegetable farming. The best part is that they used all local materials and local labours to create our eco-village.

Promoting eco-tourism in the Sundarbans
Nature based tourism is increasing throughout the world. Most is based in national parks and restricted areas. UNESCO has declared 28% of the world’s largest continuous mangrove forest, the Sundarbans, as a world heritage site in 1987. But having the world’s densest population, it is difficult to protect the flora and fauna unless there are economic benefits to the country as well as to the local people. This paper suggests that nature-oriented tourism can be one means to help achieve sustainability in the reserve forest as well as protecting the important world heritage site. Well-planned tourism could provide
economic and political incentives for proper management and for conservation and could bring additional benefit to local communities and regional economies.
The Sundarbans mangrove forest, one of the largest such forests in the world, is formed at the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers on the Bay of Bengal. The site is composed of three sanctuaries (Sundarbans West, South, and East) with a
total area of 140,000 hectares (figure 1). It is located adjacent to the border of India's Sundarbans. World Heritage site, first inscribed in 1987. The three sanctuaries, intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mud flats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests, present an excellent example of ongoing ecological processes, displaying the effects of monsoon rains, delta formation, tidal influence and plant colonisation. The area is known for its wide range of fauna including birds, reptiles, the Royal Bengal tiger and other threatened species, such as the estuarine crocodile and the Indian python. The Sundarbans is not only the world’s largest continuous mangrove forest but is also of great economics importance to Bangladesh, as a prime source of valuable natural products ranging from building timber to prawns and honey to palm leaves for thatching (Blower 1985). There are other extensive areas of mangrove swamp elsewhere in Southeast Asia that apparently differ in terms of both flora and fauna, but none can offer such variety of scenery and wildlife as the Sundarbans. The Sundarbans is not only a unique national asset to Bangladesh, but is also of international significance as one of the world’s outstanding wild places.
The primary goal of creating sanctuaries is to conserve the mangrove forest and its flora and fauna in a natural state, while providing opportunities for education and recreation. Compared with other types of tourism, eco-tourism has the most potential to meet these goals and it will be able to tackle most of the problems. It is clear that eco-tourists are distinct from conventional tourists and have different and often more beneficial environmental, social,
and economic impacts on protected areas.
