Mannar Island - 2018
Mannar is located 325km north of Colombo. It belongs to the nothern province Sri Lanka. The easiest route to Mannar from Colombo is via Anuradhapura and Madawachchiya. It is a dry and a barren island. We can define this as a dry near-peninsula with lots of white sand and palm trees, wild donkeys and fishing boats. It is spotted with ancient baobab trees.
We can take a awesome rest there although the streets are little bit dusty.The people in Mannar are welcoming too.

Sri Lanka Road Trip Mannar Island
Mannar Island, about three-quarters up the west coast of Sri Lanka, has an interior that is totally unique to the country. If you have transport, a motorbike for example, it's great to head inland on the A14 towards Talaimannar. The landscape changes quickly and the village of Talaimannar itself is pretty cool.

Mannar fort is situated on Mannar island in Sri Lanka. It is close to the city and can be easily visited as it is not too far away. I would recommend visiting this place either in the morning or during the evening. Going to see this place during day time can be too harsh due to the hot climate. At evening, you will be more relaxing and definitely enjoy the most of what the fort can offer to you.
According to history, first, it was built by Portuguese in 1560. Then it was captured by Dutch in 1658, which they rebuilt the fort in 1696. Again in 1795, the British occupied the fort following the surrender by the Dutch. Today, it belongs to Sri Lanka Railways.

Adam's Bridge, Talai Mannar (2016)
Adam's Bridge, also known as Rama's Bridge or Rama Setu, is a chain of limestone shoals, between Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, India, and Mannar Island, off the north-western coast of Sri Lanka. Geological evidence suggests that this bridge is a former land connection between India and Sri Lanka.
The bridge is 50 km (30 mi) long and separates the Gulf of Mannar (Southwest) from the Palk Strait (Northeast). Some of the sandbanks are dry and the sea in the area is very shallow, being only 1 to 10 metres (3 to 30 ft) deep in places, which hinders navigation. It was reportedly passable on foot up to the 15th century until storms deepened the channel: temple records seem to say that Adam’s Bridge was completely above sea level until it broke in a cyclone in 1480.
Adam's Bridge starts as a chain of shoals from the Dhanushkodi tip of India's Pamban Island and ends at Sri Lanka's Mannar Island. Pamban Island is semi-connected to the Indian mainland by 2 km long Pamban Bridge. Mannar Island is connected to mainland Sri Lanka by a causeway. The border between India and Sri Lanka is said to pass across one of the shoals constituting one of the shortest land borders in the world. Adam's bridge and neighboring areas like Rameswaram, Dhanushkodi, Devipattinam and Thirupullani are mentioned in the context of various legends in Ramayana.
There are approximately 20 such sandy islets along this line of which 8 are completely owned by Sri Lanka. The border runs right in the middle of the 9th Islet and both sides keep off this in order to avoid confrontations. However illegal fishing by South Indian Fishermen is a frequent occurrence and the illegal trades such as drugs and goods are also a lucrative business for people from both sides.
We visited the 2nd Islet belonging to SL and the 3rd Islet is a Wildlife Sanctuary for the Seagulls. It’s being protected by the Wildlife Department of SL with the help of SL Navy. SL Navy has a permanent garrison based on the 4th Islet in order to confront the illegal fishing and trade in addition to protecting the Sanctuary. Unfortunately the sea got fierce after we planned to visit the fourth islet so we had to abandon our plan and return to where we started to Urumalai or Urumanai.

* Avoid careless/reckless/irresponsible/money-oriented/mega tour groups or organizers.
* Travel in smaller groups as Mother Nature can’t afford so many footprints at once.
* Minimize the use of polythene/plastic and do bring back if you have to take any with you.
* Don’t litter and even if it’ bio-degradable, please bring it back and dispose of the garbage properly and responsibly. Because no matter what it is, it will still be alien to that environment.
* Use reusable water bottles so that you don’t have to keep buying plastic ones. It’ll not only save you money but will help save nature massively.
* Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Instead savor it.
* Try and bring if you spot any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travellers.
* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. The increase usage of firewood leads to more deforestation even at a smaller scale.
* Don’t bring any plants back with you or break any plants/branches unnecessarily.
* Don’t walk off the designated footpath.
* Don’t use soap/detergent/shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they’d only lead to the contamination of those pure water sources and elimination of wildlife species.
* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.

Wetlands of Mannar, Sri Lanka
Mannar Wetlands is a RAMSAR accredited site with a multitude of wildlife and flora. In December of 2012, a large flock of migratory flamingos arrived in Mannar. Mannar District
Mannar district of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka consists of an area that is part of the mainland and Mannar island, the largest islet in the country. Mannar Island
Mannar Island, a dry, barren peninsula located in the district of Mannar, though called an islet, is in fact a peninsula formed in a shape of a tongue. At Talaimanar, the westernmost tip of the island, it is almost connected to the Dhanuskodi, the easternmost tip of peninsula of Southern India by a reef of corals submerged in the Palk Straits.
Apart from the thin strip of land that joins the peninsula to the mainland, Mannar island is also connected by the causeway over the shallow waters forming a 3 km stretch of A14 Madawachchiya --Talaimannar main road
