A Tour of The Manoel Theatre in Malta
When contemplating what to do in Malta, perhaps you might want to take in a show at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta. Opened in 1732, the theatre was commissioned by the Portuguese Grand Master of the Order of St. John and is still offering performances regularly.
In this episode of DESTINATIONS with Shawn & Tricia, we visit the Manoel Theatre to have a glimpse at a center of the island’s entertainment for the past 300 years.

Teatru Manoel - Malta
Teatru Manoel, built in 1732 by Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, and designed to provide Honest Entertainment to the Public, has gone through a lot of changes in its history. Today the Teatru Manoel is considered both by locals and by foreigners as being a magnificent jewel, existing humbly in the very centre of Valletta. Its mannerist exterior belies the majesty that one finds inside. The theatre enjoys a long history as the main contributor to the local cultural development and as an exponent of high quality productions.

Fort Manoel - Manoel Island, Malta
Fort Manoel is a small early 18th Century fort built on the islet also called Manoel within Marsamxett Harbour. Its main objective was to defend the western flank of city of Valletta. The fort was built during the reign of Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena (hence the name) and designed by the Order's engineer Charles François de Mondion, who adapted a previous design by Brigadier Rene Jacob de Tigné.

For the 2018 edition of the Valletta International Baroque Festival, Valletta 2018, VIBE, Teatru Manoel and Ana Balat Limited have joined forces on series of masterclasses tutored by Maestro Marco Mencoboni, one of the leading specialists in Baroque and Renaissance music.
Since July 2017, Maestro Mencoboni has been training a consort of singers in ensemble work and Baroque vocal and musical techniques. The masterclasses focus on the work of the influential Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi and his contemporaries and culminates in a showcase concert in December 2017, a performance with the Maestro during the festival, and a production for Teatru Manoel’s 2018/2019 season – Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, which depicts a power struggle between the goddesses of Virtue of Fortune and the god of Love.
