Dhirendra Brahmachari (12 February 1924 – 9 June 1994), born Dhirendra Choudhary in village Basaith Chanpura, Madhubani, Bihar, was the yoga guru of Yogi Bhajan who taught Kundalini Yoga in the West and founded 3HO.[1] Dhirendra Brahmachari was also yoga mentor of Indira Gandhi – a former Prime Minister of India [2] He ran Ashrams in Delhi, Jammu, Katra and Mantalai (Jammu and Kashmir) and wrote books on yoga.
Mantalai Temple is an ancient Lord Shiva temple in Udampur near the Mantalai Lake. Goddess Parvati is said to have born here. She later married Lord Shiva at this very place. The temple is at an elevation of 1450 meters from the ground, amid the most scenic surrounding of tall deodar trees. This temple holds a lot of religious significance. The shrine is a small one, and has an idol of Goddess Parvati as a “Kanya” (young girl). There are many other sets of sculptures including Shiva and Parvati together, and Parvati with son Lord Ganesha. Apart from this, the temple houses a Shiva Lingam idol and two idols of bull God Nandi that faces the shrine. The main attraction is an ancient divine rock that symbolizes the marriage of Lord Shiva to Paravati. Do you know that apart from being a religious site, this temple is an important archaeological site as well? Many terra cotta figures, statues and red earthenware found here serve as proofs supporting various theories of history. It is said that the best time to visit this temple is during the period of the full moon and Chaudas.

2500 YEARS OLD TEMPLE //CHOTA KASHI IN JAMMU // PURMANDAL SHIV TEMPLE // EXPLORING JAMMU
Purmandal Temple, also known as Chota Kashi in Jammu, is located on the Devika River (in District Samba). It is about 20 km from Purmandal Morh when you are headed towards Bari Brahmana from Jammu city. Purmandal Temple, dedicated to Parvati, is built on the west bank of the river. Bathing in the river is believed to cleanse the soul. It is said that Rishi Kashyap, after whom Kashmir is named, took up penance and austerity (Tapasya) praying to Lord Shiva for twelve years after which he was blessed by the lord himself.
Rishi Kashyap did not ask for anything for himself but requested the lord that there should be a place where when people just by a bath can cleanse their soul.
The lord, alongwith Goddess Parvati, said that Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati have already taken their places and we do not have a place where they can be brought to.
This is when Rishi Kashyap request the Goddess to come in the form of a river. Goddess Parvati agreed albeit with a condition for the lord himself. She spoke to lord Shiva, “I can go and will go down to earth dear lord, but, I will stay hidden from plain sight (Gupt roop) and wherever it is that I come out, there should be a temple of yours.”
The river, called Devika starts from Sudhmahadev which is originally 2800 years old and is near Chenani to then Chenani, Dhansal to Andeshwar and comes out from Purmandal. It further goes to Vijaypur and goes invisible (gupt) again.
The temple of Purmandal, however, has a more recent history. A king in Kashmir used to hunt for days together and would travel long distances.
After making several stops along the way and after having hunted many animals, the king reached ‘Pur’ near Mandal (Purmandal) and shot an arrow which hit the female Jackal after not finding a bigger animal for days together.
The female Jackal did not die instantly and hid out of sight of the hunters. It went to the kund (today’s spot of the Shiv Ling) to drink water and died there.
The king did not have any progeny for long till a girl child was born in his family. The child used to, however, cry all the time. When the child grew up a little, it was found that the child had severe headache. After seeing no physical problems, the doctors suggested that priests should be called to check the horoscope of the child.
The Priests then asked for the kings horoscope and told him that his horoscope clearly says that he was not to have a child. You have killed an animal who has died at a spot of Lord Shiva’s, which is why this child keeps crying. You will have to find the animal and perform its rites.
The king was baffled for he had hunted all over the place. The priest asked him to send his soldiers to Pur giving him the locations. The soldiers finally found the skeleton of the female Jackal who had died drinking water from Lord Shiva’s kund. The skeleton was lying half out of the kund and an arrow was stuck in the skeleton’s skull (and that is why the headache of the King’s daughter).
The headache stopped as soon as the arrow was pulled out.
The king visited the spot and was told by the priests to build a temple here in the name of Lord Shiva and thus came into being the initial structure of Purmandal temple almost 2600 years ago.
A statue of the female Jackal was made behind the main temple and the visit to the temple gets fulfilled only once a person pays obeisance to the female Jackal.
Purmandal is a holy place located in Jammu District, Jammu and Kashmir. It is about 40 km to the east of Jammu. It is also referred as 'Chhota Kashi'. Purmandal is situated on the banks of the Devika River, was an ancient center of trade and learning. The temples managed and maintained by J&K Dharmarth Trust.
This is a video where I've taken a trip from Jammu to Purmandal on my cycle. Purmandal which is also known as Chhota Kashi is situated in Jammu province of J&K state of India on the banks of the river Devika which mostly flows underground because of which it is called Gupt Ganga (the hidden Ganges). The place is considered as sacred as Banaras (Kashi) & it is believed that a dip in the river Devika cleanses sins as is believed about river Ganga by the Hindus. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiv & Goddess Parvati. There is a large no. of Shiv Lingams in the temple complex but none in the sanctum sanctorum.
