The story of the Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings in New Zealand
Master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell shares his story behind the remarkable Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings in New Zealand. It’s been 38 years since Matahi’s grandmother asked him to sculpt the likeness of High Priest and navigator Ngatoroirangi on the cliffs at Mine Bay, Lake Taupo, but the carvings carry a heritage that goes back 27 generations.

The story behind the Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings
Master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell shares his story behind the remarkable Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings in Lake Taupo, New Zealand.
The impressive Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings are over 14-metres high and only accessible by water.
The project to create the carvings began in 1976 when Matahi Brightwell was asked by his grandmother, Te Huatahi Susie Gilbert, to create a likeness of her ancestor Ngatoroirangi, a visionary Maori navigator who guided the Tuwharetoa and Te Arawa tribes to the Taupo area over a thousand years ago. It would create a permanent connection for her family to the land. Find out more at GreatLakeTaupo.com.
Ngātoroirangi awakens: Iconic Māori rock carvings to get significant facelift
New Zealand master carver, Matahi Brightwell, will commence work on a major refurbishment of his iconic Lake Taupō Mine Bay Māori rock carvings on February 25.
It’s almost four decades since Brightwell finished work on the carving, a 14m bas-relief representing the face of his ancestor, Ngātoroirangi. The larger work is surrounded by smaller sculptures at water level depicting key tupuna (ancestors) and kaitiaki (guardians) to the local Māori tribe.
Some 43 years ago, Brightwell was sent to Taupō by his grandmother, Te Huatahi Susie Gilbert, to carve a po whenua (a Māori totem) to consolidate the family claim to disputed ancestral land. While paddling his canoe around Whakamoenga Point, Brightwell came to a rock alcove where he had the vision to carve the face of Ngātoroirangi, the legendary navigator and tohunga (high priest) of the Te Arawa canoe which transported early Māori settlers to Aotearoa New Zealand.

Maori Rock Carvings in Taupo
In the late 1970s master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell and Jonathan Randell came to visit their home land at Lake Taupo. On a boat trip around the Western Bays, they saw the cliffs at Mine Bay and decided to use them as a canvas for their Taupo art work. The carving process took four summers to complete, and was supported by other artists over the years. The carvers took no payment other than donations to cover the cost of the scaffolding as the artwork is their gift to Taupo.

Step aboard the Sail Barbary for Taupo's most Iconic Cruise to the renowned Maori Rock Carvings. Seeing Taupo's beautiful bays on the Sail Barbary gives you the perfect mix of relaxation, fun and adventure all at once.
On the boat, Coffee, tea and hot chocolate was included which was great because it can get quite cold when it is windy. I would recommend to put on warm clothes, even if it is a sunny day! Not only that, you can get warm with some beer as they do include it. You can bring your own booze as well!
The female skipper was so communicative and positive with Ryan and me. She was very informative as she went out of her way to ensure I knew and understood the history behind the Maori culture through the carvings we saw. Not only that, a female who takes us there is so sweet, communicative, and positive. I like it. It’s free drinks including beer or wine or coffee. Byob too. It’s real fun.
The boat is so pretty and all the guest are sitting on the top deck and there's warm ponchos provide if there is rain or wind. The boat sailed a very smooth and pleasing cruise. Psst. if you don't want to get wet, be sure to stay away from the front of the boat. =P
None of this would have been possible without Great Lake Taupo, NZ! They hosted and arranged me all of the trips below on a complimentary basis. That goes the same for Sail Barbary on Lake Taupo for their wonderful support. Not to mention Base Backpackers for their complimentary accommodations for our entire stay in Lake Taupo.

Maori Rock Carvings Lake Taupo
Maori rock carvings on a north west shore cliff of Lake Taupo feature legends of the Tuwharetoa and Te Arawa, including a likeness of Ngatoroirangi who originally navigated the tribes to the area and Taniwha, the protectors of the Lake. The carvings were commissioned in the late 1970's and are designed to protect Lake Taupo from future volcanic activity. With a surface area of around 620 kms, Lake Taupo Nui A Tia was formed over 1800 years ago when the largest volcanic eruption recorded by man occurred. The Chinese and Romans recorded this eruption as days of nights when its volcanic matter was sent 55 km into the air and caused global darkness for 3 days.
