Mariners' Church, Detroit (Maritime Sailors' Cathedral) - REAL USA Ep. 88
In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed in the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral. Gordon Lightfoot's single line in the smash hit song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975 brought an otherwise rustic old stone church on Jefferson Avenue in downtown Detroit to world recognition. Yet despite the notoriety of the song, not everyone realizes that Mariners' Church is a real place that has stood (at the time of this writing) for roughly 150 years. Today the little stone church still serves the maritime community of the Great Lakes, though now surrounded by glass and steel high-rise buildings and the entrance to the tunnel to Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Though we were not able to go inside on this trip, we would very much like to get the opportunity in the future to take you inside this historical church.

Old Mariners Church, also known as Mariners' Church of Detroit and Free and Independent Church.
Founded in 1842 as a special mission to the maritime travelers of the Great Lakes by Julia Ann Anderson. With the opening of the Erie Canal, the invention of steam-powered boats, and the growth of Detroit, Julia and her sister Charlotte observed increasing numbers of seamen in the city. She felt these sailors were too often marginalized and treated as outsiders - relegated to the back of society, and literally, to the backs of churches. As a result, she willed her lot Woodward Avenue and Woodbridge Street to the site for the Mariners' Church. She also specified that it be a stone church (built for the ages), with forever free pews so that mariners would not have to be relegated to the back.
The church was thus constructed on the site of Julia Anderson's mansion and its exact size was dictated by the lot on which her mansion stood. Prior to the Civil War, the church was a stop on the Underground Railroad which black slaves followed North to Canada and freedom. Runaway slaves would go through that tunnel and, under the cover of night, were picked up by rowboats, which took them to Canada — and to safety, Rev. Richard W. Ingalls Jr says.
In 1925, the church established Mariners' Inn, a shelter that now offers rehabilitation, counseling and vocational services for homeless substance abusers.
After World War II, the construction of Detroit Civic Center required moving the 3,000 ton church to a new site about 900 feet east to where it is now by the entrance to the Windsor, Canada Tunnel, an event spectacular enough to make it into the pages of Life magazine (April 25, 1955). The Mariners' Church building is constructed of Lannon stone from Wisconsin, in the perpendicular gothic style of Gothic Revival architecture. It replaced an earlier wood structure on the same site. The new site for the church on Jefferson Avenue was where the Indian Council House was constructed after the 1805 fire. The house was used for meetings with local tribes and the first Protestant worship services in Detroit
In 1971, the church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The church's bell tolled 29 times in November 1975 to mourn the loss of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald; once for each of her 29 crew members. The church continued to hold an annual memorial, reading the names of the crewmen and ringing the church bell until 2006. The church is referenced in Gordon Lightfoot's song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald with the lyrics In a musty old hall in Detroit, they prayed in the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral. The church bell chimed 'til it rang 29 times for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald. Lightfoot himself performed the ballad at the tenth memorial service for the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1985.
Functioned as a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan until 1992, when the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled it was incorporated as an independent congregation. An important and unique aspect to Mariners' is that it is the only Michigan Church incorporated by an act of Legislature. The Trustees of Mariners' Church of Detroit were formed under the Act of Incorporation, No. 142 of 1848, by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Michigan--and which Act has neither been amended nor repealed. Though it follows the traditional Anglican liturgy, the church is an independent denomination, as cited in its charter.
The 1849 pipe organ was installed by the Garret House Organ Company of Buffalo. This was replaced in 1966 by an organ given by architect Ralph Calder in memory of his wife, Helen. In 2007, D. F. Pilzecker & Company installed an organ with 78 ranks of pipes to replace the 1966 instrument
The stained glass windows were created by the J&R Lamb Studios of New York City in 1955. The rose window on the west facade was a gift of the Browning family, in memory of their mother Bertie Ann Browning. Replicating a ship's compass, the window is an appropriate tribute inasmuch as the Browning family was associated with shipping on the Great Lakes through the Browning Steamship Co. and owned the Bob-Lo Boats and Bob-Lo Island. The windows on the side walls contain scenes from the history of Detroit and the Bible.

Driving on M-10 in Downtown Detroit, Michigan
M-10 starts at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Randolph Street in Downtown Detroit, an intersection that also marks the southern end of M-3 and the western end of Business Spur I-375. This intersection is also the access to the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel between the Renaissance Center and the Old Mariners' Church. From here, M-10 runs west-southwesterly parallel to the Detroit River on Jefferson Avenue past Hart Plaza. At the intersection with Woodward Avenue, M-10 transitions onto the John C. Lodge Freeway, which runs under Cobo Center, home of the North American International Auto Show each January. The freeway turns north-northwesterly and away from the Detroit River next to Joe Louis Arena. North of the Cobo Center curve, M-10 forms the boundary between Downtown Detroit to the east and the Corktown neighborhood to the west. The freeway has a pair of service drives as it leaves the commercial areas near the MGM Grand Detroit and the interchange with I-75 (Fisher Freeway).
Occult Downtown Detroit: Illuminati Presence in Statues&Monuments pt.1
The overhead view of this downtown hotspot reveals that the layout of the streetplan is shaped like a pentagram, the same as you've see in various expose's on Washington, D.C. and it's occult inspired architecture and street layout. I wonder if George Washington's statue next to the GM bldg, in front of the Mariner's church has anything to do with it? Or the fact that we house the largest Masonic Temple in the WORLD!? Of course, I am being facetious! Augustus Woodward noted that he did indeed 'bite' the style of Pierre L'Enfant. Even Wikipedia is right and exact on this, I just checked and it states,
The city of Detroit, Michigan, developed from a French fort and missionary outpost founded in 1701 to one of the largest American cities by the early 20th century. As reflected by the emblems on its flag, Detroit has been governed by three world powers: France, Great Britain, and the United States. The city, settled in 1701, is one of the oldest cities in the Midwest. Detroit experienced a large scale fire in 180

Episcopal Cathedral Church of St. Paul Detroit MI
The Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Detroit is the cathedral church of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan. St. Paul's is located at 4800 Woodward Avenue in Detroit, adjacent to the campus of Wayne State University. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
The current building, designed by renowned church architect Ralph Adams Cram, dates from 1907. It remains unfinished, the bell tower having never been completed. The church is built entirely of limestone, using medieval construction techniques, with no supporting steel superstructure.[2] The building boasts soaring, pointed arches, wide expanses of stained glass, and elaborate tracery, exemplary of Gothic architecture, and includes a large architectural installation of Pewabic Pottery. In 1912 it became the cathedral of the diocese.

Detroit downtown - REAL USA Episode 85
Detroit, Michigan is a much more cosmopolitan city than the mainstream media generally gives it credit for. We decided to visit and try to pack as many highlights into a video as we could. Well, that didn't work out. There is just too much to see and to do in Detroit to even introduce it in a single video. So, this video is just some of the highlights from downtown Detroit, and the cultural and sports centers at the heart of the city. We shot lots of video, so more episodes are already on the way.
