Marmaray, İstanbul'un Avrupa ve Asya yakalarındaki demiryolu hatlarını İstanbul Boğazı altından geçen bir tüp tünelle birleştiren 76 km lik bir demiryolu iyileştirme ve geliştirme projesidir.[6] Proje ilk olarak II. Abdülhamid döneminde tasarlanmıştır.[7] Halkalı ile Gebze arasında çalışması planlanan hattın boğaz geçişini de içine alan, Ayrılıkçeşme ve Kazlıçeşme arasındaki 14 km'lik bölümü 29 Ekim 2013 tarihinde hizmete açılmıştır. Açılan hatta 3'ü yeraltında olmak üzere toplam 5 istasyon vardır.
Proje, batırma tüp tünel (1.4 km), delme tüneller (toplam 9.4 km), aç-kapa tüneller (toplam 2.4 km), üç yeni yeraltı istasyonu, 37 yerüstü istasyonu (yenileme ve iyileştirme), yeni işletim kontrol merkezi, sahalar, atölyeler, bakım tesisleri, yerüstüne inşa edilecek olan yeni bir üçüncü hat ve temin edilecek olan 440 adet modern demiryolu araçlarını kapsamaktadır.[6] Üç etaba ayrılan bu işlerin BC1 Raylı Tüp Tünel geçişi ve istasyonlar etabı 29 Ekim 2013 tarihinde hizmete açılmıştır. 2015'te tamamlanması planlanan CR3 Banliyo Hatları İyileştirmesi etabı Haydarpaşa-Gebze ve Sirkeci-Halkalı banliyo hatlarının (Elektriksel, mekanik ve yapısal) olarak iyileştirilmesidir. Bu kapsamda Anadolu yakasında, ortalama iki istasyon arası 4,5 km. olan 10, Avrupa yakasında ise 2 ekstra istasyon açılacaktır. CR2 Demiryolu Araç İmalı etabında ise 2014 yılına kadar bu hatta çalışacak 20 adet 5 vagonlu, 34 adet 10 vagonlu olmak üzere toplam 54 set, Adapazarı’nda Güney Koreliler ile ortak kurulan Hyundai EUROTEM Fabrikası’nda yüzde 30 yerli katkılı olarak imal edilmekte hatta toplam 590 set çalısması planlanmaktadır.[8][9]
2005 yılında, Boğaz geçişinin Avrupa tarafından karaya çıktığı yerde bulunan, Bizans İmparatorluğu dönemine ait arkeolojik kalıntılar ve Üsküdar, Sirkeci ve Yenikapı bölgelerindeki yapılan arkeolojik çalışmaların etkisiyle projenin BC1 Raylı Tüp Tünel geçişi ve istasyonlar etabı planlanandan yaklaşık 4 sene geç tamamlanmıştır.[10] Kazılar sonucu 4. yüzyıl döneminde şehrin en büyük limanı olan Theodosius Limanı gün yüzüne çıkmıştır

It is now possible to cross the Bosphorus Strait - from Asia to Europe in just four minutes by the new Marmaray tunnel. It is the realisation of a project dreamt up by Ottoman sultans more than a century ago.
The tunnel is the world's first connecting two continents and was inaugurated on the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey.
The engineering feat spans 13 kilometres and will carry subway commuters in Istanbul, which is Europe's biggest city with a population of 15 million people. An estimated two million cross the Bosphorus Strait daily.
Work began in 2004 on what is one of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan pet projects designed to change the face of Turkey.Archaeological excavations delayed completion. Eventually the tunnel will serve high-speed and freight trains.
The idea for a rail tunnel below the Bosphorus dates back to 1860 while it is believed at one time one Sultan had French engineers draw up plans for a submerged tunnel which was never built and the peninsula remained intact.
Now the Marmaray tunnel, an immersed tube set in the seabed has joined the two continents.
One point four kilometres of its full length is fully immersed some 60 metres below the surface. It can carry around 1.5 million passengers per day. The total cost topped three point three billion euros and the government hopes it will develop into an important trading route.
Marmaray is set on a silty seabed and is 20 kilometres from the active North Anatolian Fault raising fears it could be at risk from a large earthquake.
But its free floating structure has been designed to withstand a quake with a magnitude of 9. Its interlocking construction means each section can be sealed off.
The Yenikapi station on the European side of Istanbul will showcase relics which were uncovered during the tunnel's construction. Many date back as far a 8,500 years. The excavation site included a Byzantine port and 13 shipwrecks.

On 29/10/2013 the undersea tunnel of Marmaray´s project was finally open up in Istanbul, joining by train Asia and Europe, and enabling a faster circulation between both continents. This open up celebrates de 90th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, and is the result of a long process started in 2004, and that was the dream of the Ottoman sultan Abdul Hamid II already in 1860, joining the continents of Silk Road by train.
The entire project of 13.6km (1.4km under the sea) includes 76 km of railways, 37 open air stations, 3 under ground stations and four transport interchange, and carries 75.000 people/hour in each direction. The cost of it, in wich companies like OHL and Dimetronic participate, is lead by the Japanese company Taisei and funded by the Japan Bank for international cooperation and the European Bank of Investments, having a cost higher than 3 million euros.

Marmaray is a 76.6 km (47.6 mi) long commuter rail line in Istanbul, Turkey. It comprises a rail tunnel under the Bosphorus strait, and the modernization of existing suburban railway lines along the Sea of Marmara from Halkalı on the European side to Gebze on the Asian side. The procurement of new rolling stock for suburban passenger traffic is also part of the project. Construction started in 2004, with an initial target opening date of April 2009. After multiple delays caused by the discovery of historical and archaeological finds, the first phase of the project opened on October 29, 2013. It is the first standard gauge rail connection between Europe and Asia. The second phase of the project was scheduled to open in 2015, but the work was stopped in 2014. Marmaray is a rail transport project in Istanbul. It consists of the construction of an undersea rail tunnel under the Bosphorus strait as well as the modernization of suburban rail lines along the Sea of Marmara from Halkalı on the European side to Gebze on the Asian side. The procurement of new rolling stock for suburban passenger traffic is also part of the project.[1] Construction started in 2004, with an initial target opening date of April 2009.[1] After multiple delays due to historical finds, the projected opening date was set as October 29, 2013.[2]
The name Marmaray (Mar-ma-rai) comes from combining the name of the Sea of Marmara, which lies just south of the project site, with ray, the Turkish word for rail.
The construction contract for the project was awarded to a Japanese-Turkish consortium led by Taisei Corporation. The consortium included Kumagai Gumi, Gama Endustri Tesisleri Imalat ve Montaj, Nurol Construction and Trade of Turkey.[3]
The project includes a 13.6 kilometres (8.5 mi) Bosphorus crossing, the upgrade of 63 kilometres (39 mi) of suburban train lines to create a 76.3 km high-capacity line between Gebze and Halkalı and the provision of 440 rail cars.
The Bosphorus (Istanbul Strait) will be crossed by a 1.4 kilometres (0.87 mi)-long earthquake-proofed immersed tube, assembled from 11 sections, eight are 135 metres (443 ft), two are 98.5 metres (323 ft) and one element is 110 metres (360 ft) long.[4] The elements weigh up to 18,000 tons.[5] The sections will be placed down to 60 metres (197 ft) below sea level: 55 metres (180 ft) of water and 4.6 metres (15 ft) of earth.[5] This underwater tube will be accessed by bored tunnels from Kazlıçeşme on the European side and Ayrılıkçeşme on the Asian side of Istanbul. When completed, it will be the world's deepest undersea immersed tube tunnel. Fire-resistant concrete developed in Norway was crucial for the safety of the project.[6]
New underground stations will be built at Yenikapı, Sirkeci, and Üsküdar.[7] 37 other above-ground stations along the line will be rebuilt or refurbished.[7][8] The station at Yenikapi will connect with Istanbul Metro and Istanbul LRT.[9] The above-ground suburban lines will be upgraded to three tracks, two for commuter and one for long-distance/high-speed passenger trains (bi-directional). The tunnel section allows for two, bi-directional tracks to be used by commuter and long-distance trains. During off-peak hours, freight trains may also cross the tunnel. The capacity for the suburban lines is planned for 75,000 passengers per hour in each direction.[1] Signaling must also be modernized to allow trains to be as close as two minutes apart.[10] The predicted travel time from Gebze to Halkalı is 104 minutes.[7]
Construction of the Marmaray project started in May 2004. The Marmaray tunnel was completed on the 23rd of September 2008,[11] with a formal ceremony to mark completion of the tunnel on October 13.[1] Completion of the entire project has been repeatedly delayed, and as of December 2009, was expected to occur in October 2013.[12] By 29 October, the first stage of Marmaray project will end which covers the underground connection between Europe and Asia. Passengers will be able to travel between Yenikapı and İbrahimağa.[13] The second stage is the renewal of current railway on ground, between Gebze and İbrahimağa on Asian side and between Yenikapı and Halkalı on European side. A third line will added which will provide the metro and trains will move separately.
After completion, the usage of rail transportation in Istanbul is predicted to rise from 3.6% to 27.7%.[8]
In February 2010, Railway Gazette International reported that the tunnel's administrators were hiring consultants to analyse options for carrying freight traffic.[14]

Marmaray is a 76.6 km long rail line in Istanbul, Turkey. The line has 36 stations between Halkalı and Gebze. The tube tunnel is 1.36 km long and is connecting Asia and Europe. The Sirkeci Station (Marmaray Sirkeci İstasyonu) is the first station when the train arrives the European side, in the old city. We are leaving the train and walking to the exit, which is located inside the old train station.

The test runs for the long-awaited undersea Marmaray tube project, which had been announced earlier as scheduled to take place on Friday, have been delayed by the Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communications Ministry.
