Hiking Pennsylvania: Blue Marsh lake
I Found the BEST SPOT!! Incredible Pike Fishing
Floating an unfamiliar river for some super aggressive pike. I searched around for a while, and then found one of the best pike holes I've fished in a while!
Fly rod: 9' 8wt Orvis Clearwater rod (4 piece)
Reel: Waterworks‑Lamson Liquid Fly Reel 3.5
Line: 8wt scientific anglers fly line, 20lb tapered flouro leader with a 20lb RIO wire tippet.
Rod/reel setup:
-Quantum Octane 6'6 medium heavy action rod with an Abu Garcia silver max and 30lb braided line, connected to a 27lb 9 steel leader.
***The rod and reel I was using is a cheap setup, and I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. I only use it at the river in case something happens, I'd rather break that than an expensive rod/reel.
America's Wildest Places - John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, Pennsylvania
John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is a green respite nestled within the urban setting of the city of Philadelphia. Refuge lands are a thriving sanctuary teeming with a rich diversity of fish, wildlife, and plants native to the Delaware Estuary. Healthy and productive expanses of freshwater tidal marsh, open waters, mudflats, and forests support the hundreds of species that breed, rear their young, rest during migration, and call the refuge home year-round.
With partners' support, the refuge leads by example in the restoration and conservation of freshwater tidal marsh within the Delaware Estuary. Also, given its accessibility and visibility to over 35 million Americans living within a 2-hour drive, the refuge serves as a prominent ambassador of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Its high-quality programs promote natural and cultural resource stewardship, demonstrate the conservation of urban wildlife habitat, encourage compatible outdoor public use, and serve as a living classroom to connect people with nature and local history. Those who visit John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge are inspired to take action to improve the quality of life for themselves and those around them.
WILDLIFE & HABITAT
The refuge protects a variety of habitats for birds in the highly urbanized landscape of greater Philadelphia. It has been designated as an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. While most of the 300 plus avian species identified at the refuge utilize it as a migratory stopover, more than 80 species have been recorded nesting on the refuge over the years. Several species are also state listed as either threatened or endangered species or species of state or national management concern.
The refuge is home to the northern river otter and the marsh rice rat. There are eight turtle, three snake, and eight frog and toad species known to inhabit the refuge.
John Heinz NWR protects the largest remnant of freshwater tidal marsh, roughly 285 acres (one-third square mile) that remains in this part of the State. A marsh is a type of wetland that is dominated by herbaceous rather than woody plant species.
TRAVEL & TOURISM
With over 10 miles of trails and several wildlife observation platforms, the refuge provides many areas for visitors to observe wildlife. There is also much to discover, study and photograph.
Canoeing is one of the most popular activities at John Heinz refuge. Paddle the 4.5 mile segment of Darby Creek to wind through the largest freshwater marsh in Pennsylvania.
Recreational fishing is a priority use of the National Wildlife Refuge System and there are many locations to fish throughout John Heinz refuge.
Refuge trails are open every day of the year from sunrise to sunset, free of charge. The main entrance to the Refuge at 86th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard in Southwest Philadelphia provides access to the Visitor Center, foot trails, fishing, and wildlife observation platform.

Whopper Plopping Delaware Smallmouth! Brandywine Creek State Park
I set out today with a whopper plopper and caught a very nice 2lbs. smallmouth bass which are few and far between on this stretch of the river along with a few other smaller bass as well. This time of year is super exciting to experiment with top water if you haven't thrown it much before.
Ice Fishing Sayer's Dam At Bald Eagle State Park (PA) 01/18/2015
Jigging for panfish through the ice at Foster Joseph Sayer's Dam at Bald Eagle State Park. Had a decent day, caught 24 fish total, including 21 perch, 2 crappie, and a bluegill. All fish were caught on a chartreuse tear jig tipped with maggots, minnows, or Powerbait crappie nibbles.

Relaxing Nature Journey 26 ( Winter 2017 / Ridley Creek State Park )
Nature Journey series:
Nature Sounds series:
Getting back into the swing of more nature videos this year as I ramble both verbally and physically once again through the local winter woodlands of Ridley Creek State Park, Pennsylvania, in an effort to share with you the calming sights and sounds of the trees and flowing waters of the creek.
As stated in the video, I hope to film more nature videos this year, especially (hopefully!) from some new places, that may include waterfalls and perhaps an ocean.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say. And nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to winter here in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Dull grays and browns paint the barren landscape, and often the sky as well. Even when the sun does break through the clouds to offer a blue sky, the earth still remains cold and bleak. But there is still plenty of beauty that one can find in the reflection, peace, solitude and tranquility provided by the natural areas that still remain near us.
Tech note: Recorded with in-ear binaural microphones but converted to mono/stereo. Not just with the hearing impaired in mind, but mostly since walking near the creek with my head turning about, or the creek being on one side of me, doesn't create the best listening experience. Plus, if you can only listen through 1 ear (if you're at work, for instance) you aren't missing anything either.

Erie Bluffs State Park Shoreline
This is a really beautiful area that is largely undeveloped. The first time I was here it was difficult to find and there wasn't even a parking area. At my last visit there was a designated parking area but little else. I walked in from the top across fields then a unique forest to the top of the bluff, If you decide to descend to the lake be sure of your footing as the bluff trails can be treacherous. The informal trail system works its way along the bluff and you can descend to Elk Creek where there is a developed parking area.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Erie Bluffs State Park is a 540-acre (219 ha) Pennsylvania state park in Girard and Springfield Townships, Erie County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The park is the largest undeveloped stretch of land overlooking Lake Erie in Pennsylvania. Erie Bluffs State Park is just north of Pennsylvania Route 5 near Lake City and 12 miles (19 km) west of Erie. It is one of the newest Pennsylvania state parks.
Ecology: Most of the Lake Erie coastline in Pennsylvania is highly developed. Erie Bluffs State Park is the largest undeveloped stretch of coastline in Pennsylvania. It is therefore highly prized as an example of the wild nature that once stretched up and down the coast of Lake Erie. This 1 mile (1.6 km) stretch of coastline is at an elevation of 636 feet (194 m).[1] It features bluffs approximately 90 feet (27 m) tall, patches of old-growth forest, rare, endangered and threatened plant species, a world-class steelhead fishery, a savanna ecosystem, wetlands and several archaeological sites.[2

Bushkill Waterfalls. The Niagara of Pennsylvania
The Niagara of Pennsylvania, Bushkill Falls is among the Keystone State's most famous scenic attractions. This unique series of eight waterfalls, nestled deep in the wooded Pocono Mountains, is accessible through an excellent network of hiking trails and bridges which afford fabulous views of the falls and the surrounding forest.
High in the uplands of the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania, streams of crystal pure water bubble up through rifts in primeval rock. These are the headwaters of Bushkill Creek, a great marsh alive with the call of wild birds.
As the waters begin their descent toward the Delaware River far below, they move ever faster toward Bushkill Falls, rushing over Pennell Falls, then between rocky walls through the Upper Canyon and Laurel Glen.
Suddenly the stream drops over the edge of a 100-foot cliff, the majestic Main Falls. From the deep pool at the bottom, banked by ferns, mosses, and wild flowers, the creek now drops another seventy feet through a long and spectacular gorge strewn with gigantic boulders. Trails and bridges lace the area, affording splendid views.
Nature hikers are enthusiastic about the walk to the Bridal Veil Falls. Here you will follow a nice trail by the Pond Run stream. The stream soon flows into the Little Bushkill where the mountain path leads deep into the forest. Spring-fed waters tumble down the mountain side in a series of three lovely falls, so misty in their appearance they are named for brides of love.
Charles E. Peters first opened Bushkill Falls to the public in 1904, with a single path and a swinging bridge over the head of the main falls. Bushkill Falls is still owned by the Peters family.
