Our Trek at Martin's Cove, Wyoming
We hiked with our family and 80+ others from our ward, pulling handcarts on our way to Martin's Cove, where over 500 Mormon pioneers in the Martin & Willie Handcart Company suffered 5 days of cold and snow in November 1856. We had better weather.
Martin's Cove and Devil's Gate
In 1856 converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church, used small carts that were pushed and pulled by people, to carry their belongings to their destination of the Salt Lake valley. Two of the handcart companies left late in the summer and were caught in blizzards in Wyoming. One of the handcart companies, the Martin company, took shelter in a small cove that gave some protection from the blizzards. A few miles from the cove is a gorge in a granite ridge that was cut by the Sweetwater River. This gorge is known as the Devil's Gate. This gorge was a landmark on the Oregon Trail and the Mormon Trail.
Today, Martin's Cove, and the Sun Ranch which is near Devil's Gate, are historical sites of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
