Mary Mackillop Roses - biography-- college place, ACU north sydney campus
Mary Mackillop devoted her life to ministering to the sick, the poor, and the lonely. She set goals to elevate the disadvantaged, objectives which she doggedly followed, no matter what the obstacles or opposition, pursuing them with a steely determination until they were realized. The life story of Mary Mackillop is one of love, compassion, sacrifice and humility. It is also a story of success and achievements. And of determination and endurance. And of pain and pure sacrifice for her fellow human beings. Mary Mackillop led by example and her life is her example. A shining example of how one woman can make a difference to so many people. Mary Mackillop enduring legacy will light up the hearts of many for generations to come. Mary MacKillop was a woman ahead of her times in portraying the position of women in society. As brave and goal oriented as she is Mary MacKillop was always prepared to sacrifice for her fellow human beings.

St Mary MacKillop, Sydney, Australia
Mary Helen MacKillop RSJ (15 January 1842 – 8 August 1909) was an Australian nun who has been declared a saint by the Catholic Church, as St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Of Scottish descent, she was born in Melbourne but is best known for her activities in South Australia. Together with the Reverend Julian Tenison Woods, she founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart (the Josephites), a congregation of religious sisters that established a number of schools and welfare institutions throughout Australia and New Zealand, with an emphasis on education for the rural poor.
The process to have MacKillop declared a saint began in the 1920s, and she was beatified in January 1995 by Pope John Paul II. Pope Benedict XVI prayed at her tomb during his visit to Sydney for World Youth Day 2008 and in December 2009 approved the Catholic Church's recognition of a second miracle attributed to her intercession. She was canonised on 17 October 2010, during a public ceremony in St Peter's Square at the Vatican. She is the first Australian to be recognised by the Catholic Church as a saint.

Mary MacKillop's heroic example in the face of suffering helps many to accept the cross in their life. Daniel's cheerfulness in his dying months is one such example.

WYD 2008 - Mary Mackillop's Spirit lives on
A key point of prayer at this World Youth Day is Mary Mackillop place over in North Sydney which has just launched a new exhibition for the occasion. Pilgrims visiting Mary Mackillop place will discover how Mary Mackillop´s spirit continues to live on.
It´s been a wonderful evening, we´ve launched a special exhibition, In the footsteps of Mary Mackillop, Australia´s saint. And it´s really like our official beginning of World Youth Day event here, and there's many more exciting things to happen during this week. We're expecting our first pilgrims, we're hoping they'll be lots and lots of people coming through the Oval into the chapel, and just enjoying this wonderful person. The basic experience I think we´d call the pilgrimage experience, young people will gather on Shore College Oval which is over next door, and they'll walk around into Mount Street and into the chapel. When they enter the chapel, we have four banners depicting the four things that we saw were important about World Youth Day. We picked Mary the person, this woman of great love, Mary the witness, Mary of the Cross, and Mary the pilgrim.
I see Mary Mackillop as a big-hearted woman, full of love, and full of compassion, who had a passion in her life to make a difference.
