Maasai are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are among the best known local populations due to their residence near the many game parks of the African Great Lakes, and their distinctive customs and dress. The Maasai speak the Maa language , a member of the Nilo-Saharan family that is related to Dinka and Nuer languages. Some have become educated in the official languages of Kenya and Tanzania, Swahili and English. The Maasai population has been reported as numbering 841,622 in Kenya in the 2009 census, compared to 377,089 in the 1989 census.The Tanzanian and Kenyan governments have instituted programs to encourage the Maasai to abandon their traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle, but the people have continued their age-old customs. An Oxfam study has suggested that the Maasai could pass on traditional survival skills such as the ability to produce food in deserts and scrublands that could help populations adapt to climate change. Many Maasai tribes throughout Tanzania and Kenya welcome visits to their villages to experience their culture, traditions, and lifestyle, in return for a fee. They are considered one of the tallest people in the world, with an average height of 6 ft 3 inches according to some reports.

This is an introduction / background to the film project Lions and the Maasai in Ngorongoro – New Pathways to Coexistence.

It explains the need for an educational film targeting the Maasai community in Ngorongoro, Tanzania.

One effective way to communicate is showing film in villages where many people don´t read or write. The film will be made in cooperation with KopeLions team of former warriors – now Ilhokutis (Lion Guardians).

KopeLions work
KopeLion, Korongoro* People’s Lion Initiative, is a collaboration between lion researchers and the people of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania. KopeLions goal is to develop and implement a sustainable model for positive coexistence between resident pastoralists and lions in Ngorongoro. Here intensifying human-wildlife conflicts has been tough on the lions. In the last decades, the lions have begun to disappear entirely from their former ranges, separating the famous Ngorongoro Crater lions from the Serengeti.

KopeLion, comprised of local experts and international scientists, employs former lion hunters to actively protect the remaining lions and reduce conflicts. KopeLions work builds upon data collected over the last 50 years, representing the best-known, best-studied lions in the world.

* Korongoro is the original Maa name for Ngorongoro. Maa is the language of the Maasai.

After exiting the Serengeti National Park we entered the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where the Maasai people live and farm. They live a nomadic lifestyle and they welcome visits to their villages to experience their culture, traditions and lifestyle, in return for a fee. I very much enjoyed my visit.
