Matrimandir Auroville Pondicherry
Matrimandir Auroville Pondicherry (Temple of The Mother), is situated at the center of Auroville initiated by The Mother of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. It is called soul of the city and is situated in a large open space called Peace. Matrimandir does not belong to any particular religion or sect.
At the center of her town, the mother said there would be a “Park of Unity, and a pavilion named “Matrimandi”, translated as Mothers shrine.
Matrimandir Auroville took 37 years to build, from the laying of the foundation stone at sunrise on 21 February 1971 - the Mother’s 93rd birthday - to its completion in May 2008. Matrimandir is in the form of a huge sphere surrounded by twelve petals. The Geodesic dome is covered by golden discs and reflects sunlight, which gives the structure its characteristic radiance. Inside this central dome is a meditation hall known as the inner chamber - this contains the largest optically-perfect glass globe in the world. Matrimandir, and its surrounding gardens in the central Peace Area, is open to the public by appointment.
The four main pillars that support the structure of Matrimandir, and carry the Inner Chamber, have been set at the four main directions of the compass. These four pillars are symbolic of the four aspects of the mother as described by Sri Aurobindo, and are named after these four aspects.
The Amphitheater
At the time of Auroville’s inauguration ceremony on February 28th 1968 a white urn in the shape of lotus bud had been placed on top of the mound. The construction of the Amphitheatre started on 1972, but it was only in nineties that it was finally clad with red sand stone.
The Auroville Charter, handwritten by the Mother, along with handfuls of soil from all over the world, is sealed inside the Urn. Three times a year, for New Year, Auroville’s birthday and Sri Aurobindo Birthday, a large bonfire is lit at the dawn in the middle of the Amphitheatre and the community gathered for a collective meditation.
Twelve gardens
Names given by the Mother to Matrimandir twelve gardens: Existence, Consciousness, Bliss, Light, Life, Power, Wealth, Utility, Progress, Youth, Harmony, Perfection.
The sequence in which these names are listed is important because, in Sanskrit, the first three names are Sat-Chit-Ananda, which is the essence of the Divine. Perfection being the ultimate aim of evolution comes last in the list. The gardens rotate counter-clockwise and the first and last gardens are on either side of the East radial pathway.
The Banyan Tree
By late 1965, the time had come to define the centre of Auroville. Roger Anger, the French architect to whom the Mother had asked to design the future town, brought to her a map of the area north of Puducherry. She was in her room at the Ashram and had probably never set foot in that area, for at that time there was no motor able road leading to it. She concentrated and pointed to a particular area on the map.
The architect took a jeep and drove to the area she had pointed at and found there a solitary banyan tree in an almost totally barren plateau overlooking the Bay of Bengal. The Mother was very happy about the presence of a banyan tree, a tree regarded as sacred in India, and decided to make it Auroville’s geographical centre.
During Auroville’s Inauguration Ceremony, it provided shade to an exhibition on the future town and, at the Mother’s request, a stainless steel ring bearing the words (in Tamil and in French) “Auroville, the City at the Service of Truth” was placed around its trunk. (This ring is now on display outside the Town Hall.)
This Banyan Tree is now probably a little more than a hundred years old. Banyans have the peculiarity of producing aerial roots which grow down from the branches towards the ground and take root to become new trunks. (The diameter of this banyan is now kept at approximately fifty meters so that it remains in proportion with its surroundings.)

Auroville Matrimandir | Soul Of The City | Pondicherry | Tamil Nadu | India
The Matrimandir (Sanskrit for Temple of The Mother) is an edifice of spiritual significance for practitioners of Integral yoga, situated at the centre of Auroville initiated by The Mother of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Passes for the Matrimandir Viewing Point can be obtained for free at Auroville's Visitors' Centre, after watching a short introductory video on the Matrimandir.
Visitors and guests should bear in mind that the Matrimandir is not a ‘tourist’ site; it is a place for individual silent concentration. A place which should be visited in an appropriate physical and mental state.
Mahakali entrance to Auroville's Matrimandir
Entering the Matrimandir through one of the entrance accesses with their particular door. Correction to previous mistake: it is Mahakali entrance.
A quite peculiar sensation...
The Matrimandir is a very special, unique structure, at the same time very spiritual, futuristic, psychedelic in a sense. The approach already is at another level form the mental or physical one: as you get close to this golden globe you feel entering into a different dimension. You pass through the 12 petals, meditation chambers for purifying various aspects of your soul, then you are ready to enter the structure itself.
...and here you find yourself in front of very special doors, golden panels that slide as you get near, opening the way to the orange-pink interior that will lead to the whiteness of the Inner Chamber with its Crystal that connects your soul to the universe through a single ray of sun that descends perpendicular, crossing the whole structure.
